Your father appeared still somewhat strong, but he could barely get up from his throne alone; he then tripped and told his attendants to move away when they tried to help him get up. He got up and choose to wear ceremonial armor instead of the heavier full combat garb.

Your father waited for you to strike first and expertly deflected your blows with his axe for the first couple minutes of the combat; when he notices your hesitation, he jumps at you with an agility you didn't knew someone that old could muster and you had serious trouble for about a minute, but no longer; one of the counter strike blows of your spear that you thought would be deflected ends up connecting below his left shoulder. He seems proud as your eyes meet before they widen in an expressionless stare and his lifeless body fall to the side.

You take the crown from your father's corpse and crown yourself; later you attend the funeral.

When the funeral pyre grows cold, it is time to attend to your new life as a ruler. News came from the west of strange creatures lurking in the tunnels. To the north we're neighbours with dwarves, but haven't contacted them in decades. To the east there's a human city outside the tunnels with whom we do occasional trade. To the south lies the domains of a very old vampire who doesn't dare to come out of his underground castle; with thousands of slaves, he trades for rare trophys from dangerous beasts and members of noble families sometimes trade with him seeking slave brides.

Last census was years ago, back then our tribe had 572 minotaurs and 2984 slaves.

Our food situation is stable.
Our army is deplorable.
Our population is healthy.
Our wealth is adequate.
Our magic is weak.
The gods are indiferent towards us.
Our sages are researching the wheel.

We've been thinking about raiding the dwarves. Our oldest shamans know more or less where the dwarves dwell if they still live in the same places of old, but he advises the way will be filled with traps.

We decide for a general draft upon all minotaurs except those absolutelly needed to keep the harems in order; the draft is extended to all slaves willing to fight, with the promise they'll receive freedom for themselves if they survive.
All in all we get 240 minotaurs drafted; and 639 male slaves and 213 female slaves volunteered to join our ranks, the vast majority of them humans or half humans, but also an expressive amount of halflings and a few elves.

One of the halflings suggests to train the slaves in the use of slings, throwing spears and bows.

We decide that the little slave's idea of a ranged militia is actually good. Halflings have been dependable slaves who don't seem to mind farming our food, and their females don't make very good harem material as they tend to die during childbirth due to the disproportional size of the minotaur baby, so we've been allowing them to live pretty much on their own little community. You've been told his particular slave comes from a farmhand family that has been with us for several generations and never gave anyone trouble; they also seem to enjoy some reputation amongst the other slaves.
As we don't have anyone well trained in ranged combat it seems auspicious to delegate the command of the slave militia to its idealizer.
One of the female slaves, an elvish courtesan bought more than a century ago from the vampire in the south who mothered dozens of minotaurs, says she could help train the militia in the use and manufacture of longbows. Most elves in the militia are related to her.
Some concern about members of other races rising too high in our ranks is voiced.
How do we handle it?

The scout party returned! They lost some men in a heavily trapped tight section of the caves, and reported that to reach the dwarves main settlement we must go through a long stone bridge over a chasm that only allows the passage of a single minotaur at a time

We decide to have the insolent dwarf slave flogged for his insolence; then the leader grants him an audience. Barely conscious and still shaking from the pain, he's proped up in the throne room and tells us of a secret tunnel he could lead us through to reach the center of the dwarf settlement, if we allow him to rule upon the enslaved dwarves after we conquer them. Upon inquired about the reasons of this betrayal he says he was banished for unlawfully befriending a female dark elf and experimenting with magically enhancing giant spiders in secret, and the tunnel is an old escape route his grandfather had taught him about. After the banishment he went to live with her dark elf friend who he allegedly married, and they lived together in the caves for about a decade until he was captured and enslaved by our people a few years ago, forced to tend to farms, working mainly keeping the pests away; his wife managed to flee and he haven't seem her since

How should we go about our raid against the dwarves?

Tell the slaves that they will stop being slaves at the end of the war if they do well. Tell them both that if they betray us or flee, then we'll torture elves and haflings (ones that they reportedly were friendly with) in their place. We reward those who are loyal and punish those who dare oppose the Minotaur kingdom.

In the meantime, send search parties out to find the wife and to get into contact with the closest dark elf encampments to attempt to ally ourselves with them to get them to join in our war efforts against the dwarves. Tell the dwarf that he'll not get the position of ruling over the enslaved dwarves, but if he does help us with his dark magic/experiments and the secret tunnel then we'll allow him and his wife to live happily in the Minotaur society (along with being adequately compensated for lending his aid to their military with his experiments).

There's a general consensus amongst the important families that any important military roles should be exclusive for minotaurs; after some debate it's agreed that the halfling and elf could hold sub official positions as drill sergeants and train the slave militia.

We decide that our army is too green and attacking now would be ruinous to us; we decide to postpone the attack on the dwarves until next year. We have proper barracks for our troops, although the place is a bit cramped. We could expand the barracks to make room for more complex training facilities.

Our shamans say the gods would be propitiated if we built a shrine. Our elders desire a library to store scrolls and further education.
Our farmhands desire a proper storage place for dry food, perhaps we could build a granary.
We have adequate furnaces and smithing facilities, but no steady source of fuel. We ought to build a coal mine or seek a source of wood if we wish to keep producing weapons and tools. We can usually trade precious metals for wood with the humans.
We have access to a mine from which we can extract plenty of silver, some lead, some iron, some copper; also large amounts of zircon.


Hearing of the existence of dark elves in these tunnels sparks the curiosity of our people and we decide to send the dwarf with search parties to attempt establishing contact with the dark elves.
Should a single search party be sent with the dwarf or several?

Too small a party could find things too dangerous to handle, too large a party could draw unwanted attention. There's a tough decision to make.

Our army spends the year focusing on perfecting fast and evasive formations to outflank our enemies in battle. In the meantime, the slave militia crafts bows and slings and start training with them.

We decide to build a shrine; we build it as a simple marble structure to the specifications of the shamans. When time comes to consecrate the shrine there's some debate about to what should we dedicate our shrine. Our traditional gods are the god of war and the god of justice. There's a small but expressive cult of the god of death. Our slaves worship several goddesses.
We also know about a spider goddess and a winter goddess, but they are foreign to our culture and we don't know the appropriate rites to worship them.

We decide to send six of our best warriors and one of our elder shamans with the dwarf to go look for the dark elves.

After a couple months, they come back missing the dwarf and two warriors; 13 female dark elves, one very scantily clad and the others donning full combat armor and carrying polearms and heavy metal shields are walking with them.
They report they were unable to find the dwarves wife, and were viciously attacked by a giant wolf spider, but through massive effort manage to hurt it bad enough that it decided to flee; after the attack all of our warriors became ill from the poison and despite the best efforts of the shaman two of them died. The dwarf disappeared during the combat.
Our party was then found by a group of male dark elves harvesting silk and our shaman convinced them to take them to their leaders. Once in their presence the shaman managed to convince them that it could be a good idea to formalize an alliance with us for mutual aid in future wars and trade partnership. The scantily clad dark elf is one of their high priestesses, the others are her bodyguards. She demands to speak with our leader and upon being introduced to him expresses the displeasure of the dark elves with the discovery that their caves are inhabited by lesser beings such as ourselves but that the dark elves might allow our continued presence in here if we show proper respect with an adequately sumptuous gift, and let it be understood that she took a liking to us when she saw we kept elves in chains so she'll personally put a good word with the council for a possible alliance if we give her that one female courtesan elf that is currently drill sergeant for the slave militia.

Our shaman thinks the dark elf diplomat is fickle, used to get her own way and prone to be easily insulted.

What should our response be?

I say we breed a dark elf, a dwarf, etc. and have the resulting minotaur children rule over the respective mother-breed. That way the slave races have some strange blood relation to the minotaurs.

That being said, slaughter the elf and raid their homeland.

After much debate amongst the shaman it was agreed that the shrine would honor the god of death; we engage in gruesome ritual torture of 13 virgin slaves until they beg for death then sacrifice them as prescribed by the traditions in order to consecrate the temple to the god of death. The city also donates 100 slaves to the shrine, to be bred, tortured and sacrificed in the ways prescribed by the traditions in due time. Our shamans say the god of death is pleased with our allegiance. Some of the more devout death cultists have their entire bodies covered in scars from self inflicted wounds. A few weeks after the shrine was finished the leader of the death cultists report that one of the human slaves had visions while being ritually tortured revealing that the death god chose her as a priestess of death. It is said of such priestesses that at the peak of their power they can freely communicate with spirits, break the barrier between realities to travel through the ethereal plane, comand malicions spirits to inhabit the bodies of the deceased and even bring the dead back to life. What should we do about it?

Our leader became deeply offended by the remarks of that dark elf and give orders to capture her and her retinue, to be put to chains as breeding stock. A fierce battle takes place; her bodyguards do their absolute best to keep the priestess out of harm's way. They prove exceedingy efficient in fighting defensivelly in a tight formation; and the priestess keeps chanting curses that make our warriors less effective in combat.

By the time we break their defensive formation, 45 of our warriors were out of combat, the tiniest cut of their poison coated polearms proved lethal; once their line was broken however, the remainder of the combat ended in a bloody mess of broken bones and hacked limbs. The priestess turned out not to be so defenseless in close combat; through some sort of incantation she turned her right arm into a some sort of glowing greenish black smoke and any body parts of others she touched with that arm would quickly and painfully rot away. As one of our men broke her knee, she let out an enraged scream, grabbed his face, killing him, and managed to incapacitate three more of our men before one of our warriors hack her glowing arm off. She screams "You filthy beasts will never take me alive!" before swallowing the contents of a tiny vial. Her arteries become visible in a purpleish color underneath her skin, her body swells unnaturally quickly and quickly deflates, dissolving into a mush.

All in all we lost nearly a third of our warriors, and managed to capture 8 of her bodyguards, the other four having died of bloodloss. They're all badly hurt, the one better off has only a broken leg and a twisted shoulder while the one worst off lost an arm and has multiple fractures all over her body. The shamans expect most of them to survive.

We also got 12 poison coated polearms. Their shields and armor are well crafted but unimpressive, so we hand them to the slave militia. The first slave we send to clean the mess left by the dying priestess loses a hand discovering that her remains are corrosive, and ends up dying several hours later. Four other slaves die hours after cleaning that corrosive puddle.

Since we killed their diplomat, the dark elves will probably figure out we intend to wage war against them. We still have about 150 battle capable warriors, and the slave militia.
Should we attack the dark elves?

After seeing how weak the minotaurs of this world are, I kinda think that we should just become hermits and try to study technology to make up for our minotaurs' lack of combat ability because obviously the ranking of skill is like Golf scores, where the lower it is the better. Our minotaurs are too inept and weak for combat. They're like weak humans, not like raging mythical beastmen.

We had a shit ton more soldiers, double their combat prowess, and the surprise on them. The fact is, with the power you've given the dark elves, 24 of them could take out the rest of our army (all 150 of them).
