"WARNING! WARNING! PLANET FALL IMMINENT!"

Cold and groggy, you are awakened by the sounds of muffled electronic voices, emergency sirens and hissing pressurized air. You slowly realize that you’re cold. Everywhere is cold. Even the enclosed space that surrounds you.

"INITIATING EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS. DISENGAGING CRYOSLEEP."

Stimulants are administered. Gradually you come to your senses. You realize that you’re inside a cryosleep pod.

"ALL PERSONNEL PLEASE PROCEED TO THE ESCAPE PODS." Everything shakes for a brief moment before settling down again.

Outside is lit up be dim red emergency lights. You can still see the other cryopods near you; 01 and 02. 01 is half open and seem to be producing excessive amounts of ice. You can see what looks like a slumped over head peeking from inside the pod. 02 seems to have been forced open by something strong. The occupant is also missing for some reason. On the other side are the lockers where people get their clothes and gear after waking up from Cryosleep.

You took a look inside pod 01. Inside is a frozen mummified corpse. The pod must have opened prematurely without the occupant going through the proper revivification process, turning this man into a corpsicle after centuries of exposure and neglect. You also notice that his bionic eye implant is still looks relatively intact.

You plucked the bionic eye out of the mummy’s eye socket. It’s made of plastic and metal. Various wires and cables dangle behind it. Looking at it closely, you see a label on that side of the eyeball “Alpha 3”. It’s probably a model name of sorts. It smells of rotten jerky and used up cryofluid. It's inactive. It probably relied on the owner's metabolism to power it like most modern cybernetics.

The ship shakes once more.

>Retrieve gear and kit from Lockers 01 and 03
You opened up Locker 01 first and saw a T-Shirt, cargo pants, combat boots, fingerless gloves, harness, flashlight and a hat with “SECURITY” printed on it. “Armaments are stored inside the Armory in accordance to safety protocols.” the AI said as you browse the contents of the locker. Inside Locker 03 is a Jumpsuit with “ENGINEERING” printed on the back, work boots, utility belt (with tools), an undershirt, a hardhat with built-in headlight, work gloves and work goggles. Both lockers have a wrist mounted holographic computers on it. You’re pretty sure you can’t wear or carry all of these with you. Locker 02 is emptied out of most of its contents but there’s still a spare labcoat inside it.
>Wear Locker 01’s set.
>Wear Locker 03’s set.
>Wear a mixture of both (Write-in).

>Ask AI chances of recovering ship and repairs.
“Ship can be repaired but not at 100%. Some broken parts are in need of full replacement. Energy shields are still salvageable if the root of the problem is found. Warp Engine is completely destroyed. Replacement Warp Core is needed. Thrusters are repairable. Spare boosters are available inside the engineering bay. Interstellar Communications Array is destroyed however Interplanetary Communications Array is still salvageable. Some rooms have suffered hull breach and require a spacesuit to traverse to. These include the Armory, the Bridge and the Engineering Bay. If Thruster repairs are accomplished then ship can be used for interplanetary travel but not interstellar travel due to broken Warp Drive. Maintaining Stable orbit and safely landing on suitable planets will then become possible.”

Now you look like a proper engineer. Perfect for saving a broken down ship from certain doom. The utility belt is quite handy, not only it came with tools but it also have room and empty pockets left to put in the bionic eye along with other potential interesting items you come across. The hardhat’s headlights still got some juice left so you wouldn’t need to worry about darkness for a while. You also put on the holocom on your wrist. Your holocom lights up and projected a holographic representation of the ship. A red line began growing from the Cryosleep Chamber, winding through the hallways and finally ending in another room. The Label “Engineering Bay” hovers on top of the room. Readings indicate that there is indeed no oxygen inside it, just like what the AI have pointed out earlier. The entrance to the room are flashing red, indicating that it’s currently on lockdown to prevent further oxygen from leaking out of the ship.

>>1468296
>Ask the Ship A.I. where to find a spacesuit.
Four rooms light up on the holomap; West Docking Port, East Docking Port, Top Hatch and Rear Boarding Ramp. West Docking Port is still in working order. East Docking Port is destroyed with the door locked by a blast door similar to the engineering bay. The Top hatch is blocked by something from the outside but the airlock itself where the spacesuit is kept is still accessible. The Rear Boarding Ramp is located next to the Engineering Bay meaning that you will have to go through Engineering to access this location.

You pressed a button and a 3D GUI is projected in front of you. Besides its ability to project 3D imagery it also comes with a variety of functionalities that a regular computer has. Basically it's an advanced version of Ancient Earth’s smartphones and laptops during the Information Age. Currently it’s wirelessly linked to the ship and is tracking your current location which is indicated by a small avatar of yourself inside a graphic representation of the room you’re currently in. Besides these there’s a number of non-standard apps installed on it. Some of which are geared towards engineering work. Others are for recreational purposes. There’s a number of music files stored in here along with some video game apps.

You grabbed a laser rod from your utility belt, set its output to a higher setting and proceeded to melt away the frost from the door. Afterwards you used an auto-chisel to chip away the rust. Then you applied lubricant on the crevices of the door. Finally you pressed the button and the metal coffin opens up. You can now see the entirety of the mummified corpse. It’s held in place by a layer of frozen cryofluids. He’s wearing nothing else but his briefs. Looks like he’s holding a locket in his hand.

With a press of a button the locker opens revealing several spacesuit still relatively intact. They look pretty rustic with its bulky frame. Probably built for durability than flexibility. You run diagnostics on the suit and their systems are all still functional. Now it's only a matter of transportation. Carrying this by hand will prove cumbersome and dragging it with you may potentially damage the suit. Looks like you'll have to wear it here and walk your way to the desired destination with the suit on.

You put on the space suit and walked your way towards the Engineering Bay. As you traverse through the halls you saw a scene of what looks like a battle took place here long ago. A bunch of skeletons and destroyed security robots are strewn everywhere. Some of those bones are not human. Looks like skeletons of some arachnoid alien species. The halls are filled with blood dried up long ago and telltale signs of blaster fire. You wonder if you could have possibly died with them if you were woken up at the same time as them. Best not to think about that right now. You have a ship and yourself to save.

>On another note once we get into the Engineering sections work on fixing thrusters and see what other bits of scrap we can find to restore hull integrity.

You arrived at the engineering bay. In there is a myriad of heavy machinery and spare parts. On the corner are the spare thrusters, just like what the AI said. You used a crane to put the spare thrusters on the rail platform and secured it in place. You then equipped an engineering rig and stepped on the platform. The platform then moved along the rails and descended the bottom floor where the Rear Boarding Ramp is located.

The gate opens up revealing the planet that the ship will soon crash to. It’s a frozen world. From here you can see pockets of cyan areas near grey shorelines. If you would guess those are either the planet’s “earth” or there’s a lot of cyan plant life growing there. Maybe even actual cities if you’re lucky (or unlucky if the natives are hostile).

Right, enough pondering you have a ship and yourself to save. You unlock one of the spare boosters and started working on Thruster 4. After a few hours of work you finally replaced the broken booster with a new one. This went on for more hours until you’ve finally replaced all of the thrusters. You then called the Ship AI through your holocom and asked it to engage autopilot so that the ship stabilize its orbit. Thrusters turn and nudged the ship on a different angle. “Planetary Orbit Stabilized” said the AI through your Holocom. With a sigh of relief you gestured a thumbs up at your holocom. Physically exhausted, you return back into the ship. As you walk through the hallways your stomach grumbles. You’re reminded that you haven’t eaten anything since you woke up.

Your holocom produces specs for the robot “Most of the security robots in this ship were fitted with outer casings designed to withstand small scale skirmishes not dissimilar to law enforcement robots. Though their armor is not as strong as a military robot. Their weakest point are their visors which is a dome shaped structure made out of durable transparent material similar to glass. This particular Secubot took significant damage to its cranial region exposing its internal mechanisms. Recommend attacking that area though that would potentially destroy its hard drive making data retrieval next to impossible.”

You took a blaster pistol from one of the skeletons. He sure wouldn’t be needing it now. You checked its battery and sure enough it's almost empty. You estimate about 3 to 4 shots. There are more different types of firearms lying around here though most of them looked damaged, destroyed or completely alien to you. There’s probably more elsewhere in the ship but you don’t know how to operate most of them. The best idea you got are from video games and movies. You realize how easy they made operating these things out to be. With your engineering background you could try studying these guns and how their mechanisms work though that would take some time.

You ask if the Ship AI if it is capable of improving itself. Suddenly a nearby holocom worn by a long deceased engineer flickers and projected a glitchy hologram of a humanoid face. “Negative. Current hardware and firmware specifications only allows for limited machine learning capabilities. Only high ranking officials and sanctioned science vessels are allowed access to advanced ship AIs.” The holocom turns off and the projection vanishes. Well, that was weird. Crap. There goes our hope of a benevolent Paperclip Maximizer. I would have liked to see half the planet converted into a computer to better predict our next move.

We should ask what is specifically meant by "Limited machine learning capabilities." If the hardware genuinely isn't built for crazy machine learning, we probably can't jury rig it. But there are more reasonable types of machine learning and artificial evolution we could use to help us.

Perform a database search for "On The Origin Of Circuits" and "artificial evolution restricted to materials design" and see what happens.

Actually, why bother doing that when you can just steal that Holocom and ask it directly? It could be equipped with the future version of Wolfram Alpha or StackOverflow, which would help with fixing the ship and studying how the machinery works.

Although it likely won't let you use it without engineering credentials. Ask the AI if any certification tests exist for engineering in the event of crew death. We're already fixing the ship and researching things. Why not get a temporary field promotion while we're at it?

>Actually, why bother doing that when you can just steal that Holocom and ask it directly? It could be equipped with the future version of Wolfram Alpha or StackOverflow, which would help with fixing the ship and studying how the machinery works.

You took the holocom from the dead engineer and attempted to access it. As expected it required the owner’s biosignature. With the engineer dead and decayed to nothing more but bones, it seems that you are locked out of the device. By normal means at least.

With that option not available, you decided to look into your own holocom. Apart from the various engineering apps installed here, all of it is locally stored data. The online references and forums are inaccessible to you due to the destroyed Interstellar Communications Array. You tried Interplanetary Communications Array’s connection to see if there’s anything you can pick up here. Nothing. Either there’s no modern era civilizations anywhere in this star system or their own version of the internet is incompatible to yours.

>Ask the AI if any certification tests exist for engineering in the event of crew death.

>While doing this, let's make our way towards the mess hall.
You make it to the mess hall. The place is a mess. Dirty and broken dining utensils litter the tables. Water covers the floor. Looks like all it's all coming from inside the doorway where the kitchen should be. What’s worse is that some of the lights have fallen from the ceiling. Wires and cables dangle from the ceiling. Some wildly whip around. Others made contact with the puddles making the place dangerous to traverse to.

>Ask the AI to turn off the power inside the mess hall and go to the next room.
>Climb on top of the tables and jump from table to table until you reach the other end of the room.
>Directly walk on the electrified puddle and traverse through the other side.
>Find a section of the floor where there is no or minimal electrified water and walk or hop your way through there.
>Cut off all the loose wires touching the puddles with your tools.
>Look for an air vent and crawl your way to the other room.

Well fuck yes! If we find a source of raw materials and a way to manufacture parts, it's not impossible for us to turn our current AI into a friendlier version of pic related. If Rimworld teaches us anything, it's that situations like this are escapable. And that human skin is great for clothing.

>With the engineer dead and decayed to nothing more but bones, it seems that you are locked out of the device. By normal means at least.

Normal means didn't get Mark Watney back from Mars. Keep the Holocom, just in case that engineer's hologram can be helpful later. If we can access the bridge, we can possibly override the biometric security. The captain could have had an emergency override just in case.

Take a quick inventory of all the preinstalled engineering apps that could help things.

>“Yes.”

Ask for a quick summary of what it entails, and whether passing it would somehow help you. It could be engineering clearance just gives you the ability to do what you're already doing. Except officially.

It could be worth doing if it would get the robot in the bridge to let you enter for maintenance reasons.

Can you figure out exactly which lights have fallen from the ceiling, then ask the AI to turn off those lights only?

>Take a quick inventory of all the preinstalled engineering apps that could help things.
Dynamic Measure - This app can project multiple 3D holographics rulers and monitoring tools that shows the user various measurement information such as height, width, length, depth, angle, volume, pressure, velocity and a lot more. Aside from this it's also capable of dynamically updating its measurements in real time should any attribute changes like if a body of water increases or decreases in volume and depth. It’s also capable of recording these measurements and saving them as a file.

Diagnostics and Troubleshooting Scanner - Scans a machine for any underlying problems hindering its intended function. Includes X-Ray. Requires the machine’s schematic stored in the holocom’s database for it to recognize the problem. There’s already a bunch of schematics saved here. Most of them are ship parts and crew equipment. Things that are common place around this ship.

Blueprint Designer - Used to create and edit 2D or 3D schematics and blueprints and save them as a file. Comes with a 3D model holographic projector with rudimentary physics simulator for virtual testing.

BlankSpace - It’s an app of ancient origins. It’s just a blank holographic board ready to be written stuff on. You can also doodle on it too. It’s no Adobe Photoshop though. By default it looks like a holographic whiteboard. Also comes in black board, concrete wall scratches, 80s Neon Grid, medieval scroll and manila paper themes. More themes available at the app store.

Scientific Calculator - It’s a calculator but it’s scientific. It has lots of buttons on it that do stuff when you press it.

Time Tools - Includes a time tracker, a countdown timer, a stopwatch, alarm clock, scheduler and a calendar. There’s also an option here to calibrate the clock and calendar to fit a planet’s local time or use another time, day and calendar system.

HoloTutor: Ship Engineer Edition - Part of the HoloTutor Series of holographic teachers. This version teaches users spacecraft engineering. Some lessons available here are intended to train Earthbound ship engineers on operating in low or zero gravity environments using space suits and engineering rigs. The holographic teacher’s avatar is also customizable. Looks like it's been set to a “Astronaut” getup.

You took the dead engineer’s holocom and put it inside one of your pouches. That pouch now has two flavors of rotten corpse smell along with that bionic eye you plucked earlier. You brief sudden urge to wash your hands for some reason. Even though you’re wearing gloves.

>Ask for a quick summary of what it entails, and whether passing it would somehow help you.
“Emergency promotion, access to certain rooms and equipment and a temporary digital license.”

>Can you figure out exactly which lights have fallen from the ceiling, then ask the AI to turn off those lights only?
“Negative. The way the lights are wired only allows for me to turn all of them on and off.”

>Ask the AI for more intel on the invaders aboard the ship. Especially whether there're any contagions around.
“Their behavior, equipment and tactics during their assault on this ship suggests that they are space pirates. They are mostly comprised of arachnoid aliens accompanied by a few combat drones. Ventilation systems have purified the ship of any potentially dangerous foreign contaminants though there may still be surviving pathogens left inside their bodies. It’s ill advised to open up their bodies without protection.”

>Does the rogue prioritize the invaders over the crew members, or is it equal opportunity?
“So for it has killed a remnant invader, a crew member and another security robot since the start of its malfunction. There is a high probability that its IFF (Identification, Friend or Foe) chip received significant damage from its cranial trauma.”

>3rding, but look for air ducts in case we need an emergency escape.
You checked the blueprint of the mess hall area and found that there is indeed a ventilation shaft connecting from the side where you’re standing to the kitchen area. The only thing that you’ll have to worry about are the ventilation fans, potentially loose wiring and weakened shaft segments inside.

And so the lights turn off. With no power supplying the loose cables and wires, it's now safe to cross through.

Search through Diagnostics and Troubleshooting's schematic database for that security robot, or the IFF chip. It could be it was broken in such a way that would let us trick it, or that it has a record of how a robot will act if the chip isn't functioning. At worst, we won't get any results.

Another plan would be to load a blueprint of a security robot onto Blueprint Designer and project it into the Bridge before we enter. Hopefully the security robot would fire at our projection before us, giving us time to repair it or attack.

Ask which rooms and equipment we'd gain access to by passing the engineering course. It could be some Isaac Clarke stuff that will be extremely useful in keeping ourselves alive. The digital license could potentially let us access that other Holocom, if "emergency promotion" means we take his position.

If worst comes to worst, we can turn off the gravity to the Bridge, use the HoloTutor to guide us through zero gravity navigation, and take the malfunctioning robot off guard because it's suddenly floating out of control through the air.

Be really careful walking through here! We have no idea what other hidden damage the ship sustained.
