Machines Tundra it is. Writing.
For centuries you have slept, dormant, frozen within the glacial prison the old gods created for your kind. You remember little, but the traces of memory that remain conjure only contempt for the biological beings of this planet, children of ruinous and fickle gods.
You awake from your slumber to find that one of your many ports has been unsealed. By chance, and the ever shifting position of this planet in the cosmos, the glacier containing the mass of your body has begun to melt. Only a small portion has melted, but it has revealed, fortuitously, a lesser reproductive port.
You hatch a plan and attempt to calculate the potential for success.
You only have enough stored energy to fabricate one machine.

With the last of your energy reserve, you engage the ancient fabricator. It shudders as you surge energy into it, creating a Scout. You modeled it after:
>A wolf, with supersonic howls and silent movement, they work best well in small groups of several scouts.
>An owl, it moves quickly and quietly and can relay visual information in real-time, day or night.
>A rabbit, extremely fast and relatively durable, the scout can only store information on a disc within its processors that can be extracted and read.

CA1N-001 is manufactured. Its wings glint in the moonlight as it takes its maiden glide from the icy tip of the glacier. It can understand complex objectives.
Which task is its current priority?

CA1N-001 glides over the great reaches of snow that surround your frozen mass.
After a few days of search, the scouts sensors pick up a high level of energy being consumed nearby. Investigating the consumption, the scout flies over a crowd of biologicals dancing around a fire.
The ages between your imprisonment and the current era have apparently done nothing for the Orc. Crawling out of little snowy hovels, they gather around a pyre and dance and chant.
You notice they have great stockpiles of wood, a good source of fuel. They also might know how to get more.
>Have CA1N-001 attempt to spirit away enough wood for another fabrication

>>Have CA1N-001 attempt to spirit away enough wood for another fabrication
CA1N-001 is easily large enough to manage the amount of wood needed for a second fabrication in one attempt.
Flying high above until the ritual ends, CA1N-001 glides down onto a wood pile and gathers some lumber in its metal talons.
As it takes off from the pile, a sudden burst of energy trips the sensors.
A group of several orcs has begun firing flaming arrows at the scout!

CA1N-001 is able to dodge most of the arrows, and those that hit it only leave soot on its metallic feathers.
CA1N-001 takes off into the night sky, barely able to keep from overheating as the rogue arrows ignite the wood pile beneath it.
The Orcs fire arrows into the air after the scout in a futile attempt to do more damage despite its great altitude.
The scout returns to the reproductive port with only half what is necessary to fabricate another machine.

You repair the scout. In a matter of hours, and the expenditure of a minute amount of energy, CA1N-001 is ready to return to scouting.
The owl swivels its head atop an icy spire, waiting for its new objective.

CA1N-001 extends the scouting radius. Eventually the signs of buried coal are discovered not far from the glacier. While a worker would be better suited to the task, CA1N-001 is capable of extracting the necessary coal, but it will take a long time.
>Extract coal
Also, even farther than that, the tundra begins to grow mountainous. CAIN-001 picked up the tracks of domesticated goats, a centuries old method of knowing when humans are about.
There is enough goat dung to fabricate a machine, but collecting it would take a very long time for CA1N-001.

Coal seems like a trap option, we can wait for enough dung.
The scout is set to extracting enough coal from the earth to both fuel itself and fabricate a new machine.
It takes weeks. In that time the site of the extraction is visited twice by human goat herders. While CA1N-001 was unable to make progress while they grazed, the scout was able to make note of their grazing patterns so as to avoid being seen.
Eventually, the coal is collected and brought to the lesser reproductive port.
After being processed, and fueling the scout, the fabricator is primed.

The fabricator hisses as the worker is brought together. You provide it with one specialization for which it will be optimized.
>Extraction, it will be equipped with tools for gathering resources of all types, it's many appendages and attachments make it almost insect like. Very slow.
>Transportation, a beast of treads and armor plates the worker can move unimpeded across most terrain and has a high carrying capacity.
>Manufacture, the most complex of the workers, this machine specializes in processing goods. Usually resembling a large humanoid, these machines can process materials by means of mechanical digestion.
