Warmth, warmth and dark

The only other perception running through you is the beating of the many chambered heart of your mother. Well more accurately her tertiary heart, deadicated to the ships womb

The calming hum keeping the worries of the universe at bay, however something is wrong. the distant hum of her primary heart is silent and the schematics in your cortex pertaining to your own class and design are incorrect. For one you are nearly twice the designation of Heavy Corvette placing you clearly in the low end of the Frigate scale. for another you have a spinal mounted weapon.

You could have gotten a rail gun, or an Ioncannon. those are standard spinal mounts, or even a series of drone mounts aren't unheard of. Obviously that isn't what happened, not having been set out to be a spinal mount capable vessel your other dorsal structures seem to have grown into the cavity producing some sort of directed sensor array. you have no idea what such a thing would be used for. Suddenly Something dawns on you, you are alone.

Your mother should be here... filling you in on your operating doctrine, who do you serve, what is your perpose. Your awareness means you must be nearing birth but her crew is not here prepering you for the harshness of space. You should be being bonded to your first captain.

No one is here.. no one is even here to give you a name!

Someone has to be here, your records indicate your mother had a crew of thousands, you were expected to have a starting crew of two dozen. someone has to be there.

You ping your comms... nothing
You broadcast on all open frequencies... nothing
You test the umpilicals still mooring you to the womb, maybe bumping the sides can get someones attention... nothing but now the temperature seems to be dropping and the tertiary heart seems to be slowing.

Maybe your spinal mount could do something? You're kind of at a loss, this just doesn't happen. there is always a captain, there have only been few instances where a mother has foundered before the birthing, but there has ALWAYS been someone to guide a new ship.

A tingling sensation runs through your systems but you must have calibrated the signal wrong since it seems to blow out all receivers directly in front of you. and several secondary detonations can be felt deeper in the ship.

The hum of mothers heart nearly stops but just before it does something lets loose. your inertial systems alert you to movement and suddenly your in space. The solution you formed in spreading outward explosively as to not trap you in a block of ice.

You're free, and its bright! there are points of light in every direction, stars! You've been born! Your real now... but without a Captain, a crew, or a name.

You pick up explosions ahead of you, mother... you almost don't want to look. what do you do?

Letting your sensors register the scene is hard, there is not much left of your mother, or maybe the section you formed in broke free? In any case its not likely she survived the loss of the womb you formed in, and its peripherals. It's a miracle that it functioned enough to bring you to term at all.

The explosions you were detecting are comming from a medium sized craft that would maybe be described as a light cruiser? Its a mangled mish-mash of parts and has a number of light corvettes bobbing around it launching low tech liquid fueled rockets at what remains of your Mother. its also dragging hooks and makeshift umbilical that still show bits and peaces of your mothers flesh hanging from them.

5 met - crit success

You start off with your shard sprayers, they are meant for point defense but at this range and the state of the enemies armor it shouldn't matter. Following it closely with your left broadside of pulse beam emitters and then get fancy. five emitters per broadside and you roll to get off both broadsides in one pass and before they even knew they were in combat you are past them firing off your light railgun chase armament picking off the last of the escort corvettes. leaving nothing but a growing cloud of debris in your wake.

Scanning the debris feild you find the interlopers were running on some manner of fission rectors, these were not warships but their bristling with weapons beyond the capacity that their systems could safely handle . even so they are horribly out modded compared to your own weaponry but the warheads on the rockets can be adapted to your needs, modifying a handful of your shard sprayers to fire short range unguided missiles. Otherwise the low quality alloys from the ships hull fragments are of little value but you do have the facilities to smelt them down into proper usable materials... it just wont taste very good.
>Convert 10% point deffence into light rocket casters? y/n
>Collect metal y/n

You begin the grim work of scaning over your mothers remains, what little was functioning a few moments ago has gone cold and quiet. you can see the tertiary heart split by a rockets detonation, its organic reactor spoiled. you turn your comm lance on the remains on low power in hopes that there is something you can use. You find a data recorder, however all it shows is empty space for nearly a century of recorded data, about three years ago the scavengers you just killed stumbled across her and began stripping her of useful materials and tapping into her power power source. the idiots are seen pulling apart highly capable and functioning computers for the capacitor nodes in their cores. They ruined most everything but lying in the code you find a repeating algorithm. an intentional block tricking this section of the ship into operating as normal. the emergency data recorder kept recording as if four fifths of the ship wasn't missing the womb continued nurturing you until eventually all nutrients ran out. Materialy your Bio generators are fully operational and all that remains of her is mostly just structural. You could... consume parts of her just in case, but something in your cortex finds this thought distasteful.

You scan the void, you sense a lot of subspace activity coming from a Class M star definitely some sort of social hub system. You would definitely find a Captain there, but those places tend to have lots of rules and without directives or a Captain your not sure how "legal" your existence would be in such a place.

A class L star shows far less traffic and stale subspace bands, but with your comm lance you uncover a handful of coded broadcasts, probably pirates, maybe something else. definitely someone being sneaky.

and lastly a G class star which had one signal. this peculiarity made it stand out to you, not two or a back and fourth or a series of communications networks, just a single solitary broadcast with a single tone repeated all but lost in the shallow bands.

You have two broadsides of 5 Pulse emitters a standard for light energy arsenals. originaly it was supposed to be 3 but you are bigger then planned.
A pair of Light rail-cannons on both the forward and chase armaments.
Full point defense in the form of shard sprayers, small organic flack cannons.
The Comm Lance, which can be used for EW tasks, but its not a normal attachment so you don't have any clues on how it actually works.

You operate on an organic reactor called a Heart, its operations are a mystery even to you, but you know if its damaged to severely the process that allows you to produce power fails and is lost forever.

You have facilities for a crew of 40 including a common area, your inner structure is covered in thin carapace similar to standard composites to a standard that is accepted by most gas breathing species. as well as a left and right hangar/main storage bay and a secondary internal storage bay.
This is connected to a belly mounted harvester mouth that can be used to mine salvage or scoop desired materials, it is a bizarre mutation and slightly misshapen as it was original supposed to be a simple ram-scoop for a Corvette class Ship. This feeds your internal foundry which can process any material that wouldn't blow a hole in your hull.
You have a thick Carapace shell that protects well against projectiles and has a mildly ablative core that provides some resistance to explosive and energy weapons, but far less then proper shields could.
>>
alright so tie breaker roll or anyone got another vote don't vote M
>>
Tie breaker went for G

You line up with the Yellow point of light and spool up your jump drive. and with a snap of displaced reality your there. just inside the outer edge of the systems primaries gravity well. The subspace signal is originating from an object far closer in but to get there you will have to pass by what appears to be a thriving space faring community. no subspace signals so they must be relying on light speed comms.
the second third and fourth planets appear to be inhabited along with what appear to be other habitation hubs in a debris belt as well as several moons orbiting the local gas giants.

This species seems to be blessed with an embarrassment of riches, so much so they haven't stretched even to the outer reaches of their primaries gravity well, and seem to be only now experimenting with the subspace bands but are doing it the hard way from deep within a stars gravity well.

Well no use waiting around here, if anyone has the know how to become your Captain it will be at the signal... or maybe you don't need a Captain. anyways it means people and a possible crew. that will be fun, your internal sensors are going numb looking at empty corridors. you've begun to wiggle your graspers in the storage bays just for something to focus on in there.

You start to accelerate at a fair pitch and quickly pass the outer most orbital structures. They must have seen you, unless they don't even have gravitic sensors. How does a species with 3 planets and half a dozen smaller celestial bodies under its sway not have FTL yet? Everything is moving at a snails pace, fractions of C, and nothing is armored. No, wait, there's something, just a simple composite and nothing larger then a light corvette. Most of the ships appear to be simple steel or plastic containers strapped to chemical rockets. the corvettes at least have proper thrusters, if an inefficient design.

As you pass the outermost inhabited world you see that they don't truly have three habitable worlds as this one is the destination of most of the drifting containers, docking with orbital stations pumping various gasses into the planets atmosphere.

At this point the Corvettes un-dock and begin rushing to cross your vector.

You put on a bit more speed and arrive well before the corvettes even have an chance of catching up to you and then are met with another conundrum. the source of the signal is on the third planets surface. not only are they fighting the shallow band interference from their primary, they are fighting the interference generated by their own planets gravity well.

No wonder they don't have FTL! they're stupid. do you even want a crew made out of... bipedal... stupids? you feel the need to belittle and insult these creatures but your cortex library doesn't seem to have a selection to choose from just a definition.

You line up your emitters and send a response ping on the same band. almost immediately the signal stops.

As you aproch the planet there is a flurry of activity, ships are plumeting tward the surfface in bearly controlled reentries, others are spinning out away from the planet on seemingly random vectors.

You settle in a comfortable orbit, a safe distance away from the many orbital stations that ring the planet and scan were the signal was coming from.

They don't send anything else on the subspace band, and you cant find much in the way of comms. Do they communicate through chemical dispersion? that wouldn't be very indicative to space flight.
