You're Margaret Renn to friends and family, "Mad Marge" to everyone else. You're a wicked shot with your longbow and can ride with the best of 'em. Not only that, you've got a silver tongue, a strong grasp of military tactics, and can read your own damned name, something most can't say. You're a woman and while many don't take you seriously, they usually come to regret it.
You and exactly 25 men ride, or in most cases walk, across the Great Yurnu Plains, home to countless homesteads, quiet villages, and feuding petty kingdoms. Your men are running low on rations, and at the most have enough for two more days.
You've only just started your career as a bandit, and 25 men is quite a bit for one as green as yourself, but your tactical skill and oratory prowess led them to follow you. 20 of them are ignorant and greedy thugs, country bumpkins with clubs and knives. 5 of them are actual soldiers, and served in one kingdom or another's military as mounted archers, now they serve you.
As far as you know, the nearest village is three day's travel away and while you could reach it with little difficulty, your men might complain about the lack of rations. There's no doubt a dozen homesteads within a day's travel, but the pickings there might be slim. The sun is high above and the ground's beneath your feet.
