In life, we are all governed by the ever-changing Arcana.
Fate shifts drastically from one moment to another.
Emotions twist wildly.
Without even noticing, one may suddently meet death.
For one reason or another, you have chosen to seek someone who may tell how the Arcana will influence your life.
And you have found them.

The smell of burning incense was strong in the air. The room was lit only by 4, consumed candles, which cast an eerie light upon the man sitting at the table.
His features were hidden, head covered by a heavy cowl, face hidden by a brown cloth, eyes behind a pair of glasses.
He was focused on the 78 cards, gently clutched in his pale hands.

”They are coming... But who are they?”
the Teller draws a card.

> 11 - JUSTICE

The wooden door creaks as someone enters the room.
A giant of a man, face covered by a black mask. Bloody hands, bloody boots, a rusted axe tightly hugged to his body.
You are The Tormented Executioner.
You are Justice's holy instrument. You lop off the heads of the sinful, granting them absolution.
But...
Too many innocents have perished by your blade. All that Justice stands for has been cast away by corrupt judges and lying governors.
Every night, you pay for it.
The spirits of the unjustly executed haunt your dreams. The Tormented Executioner knows no rest for the atrocities he has committed.
You have escaped under the cover of night, and seen, in the distance, a lone wagon. You have found the fabled Teller, he who understands the ever-changing Arcana
What do you seek from him?

Choose:
>New purpose
>Freedom from the Torment

"Teller..." You begin, noticing that your throat is awfully dry and sometimes words seem to escape your grasp.
"They... Will not leave me alone. I see ghosts. The dead speak in hushed tones at the corners of my mind."
"God be my witness... I wish for change..."
You speak with a passion that you never knew belonged to you. The Teller looks up from his cards, and motions for you to sit down on a chair that was not there before.
"I have your answers, Tormented Executioner."
"The question is, are you willing to test fate? The Arcana hold many dangers..."
The cloaked man points a bony finger in your direction.
"You will have to face them."
With another hand, he brings the deck of cards in front of you.
"Create your own destiny."
With a trembling hand, The Tormented Executioner draws a card.

You blink once. Twice.
What is this?
Is this what life reserves from you?
Even the Teller is quiet.
"The Arcana have never been kinder. Fate pities you, Tormented Executioner."
"A life of carefree happines awaits. True joy and wonder."
"But be careful. Extravagance and Delirium have more than once caused men and women alike to fall and meet their doom."
You could swear, by hearing his voice, that the Teller was smiling.

The Teller places a hand on the card, which depicts a woman dressed in white, blindfolded and balancing two swords on her shoulders.
"The two of swords... Your travels will be beset by rogues with sharp blades. Someone hunts you down, they wish for your return. They will force you to conform."
The Teller leaves this card, moving over to the next one.

> 63 - Queen of Swords
"She who knows the secrets of sorrow will accompany you in your travels. A widow. Never give her your full trust. Her intentions may not alwasy be what they seem..." As the Teller speaks, a figure seems to rise from the ground behind him. Your eyes widen. It is a spirit... Her.

>37 - Ace of Cups
"Oh! the Arcana are particulairly benevolent... Strange. Your travels will be influenced by abundance. Food and drink will be everpresent. Hunger and thirst will not be felt."
The Teller gathers his cards and puts them away.

"You know your dangers, you know your blessings, go forth and follow them, Executioner."
"Until we meet again..."

You rise from your chair without another word. Taking the axe, you open the door and step outside. Night's chilling breeze welcomes you.

>The Tormented Executioner loses: The Axe

You look down at the weapon in your hands. Blunt steel, old wood and rust. If you were the Reaper, this would be your scythe.
The Teller said to forget... To leave everything behind.
You swing the axe into the ground, burying the blade.
Forgotten forever.
You then turn and begin running. Away from your life, away from everything. Under the cover of night, with the moon as your witness.
You are free.

Running does not tire you. The cold wind on your face is refreshing. The sound of your feet on the grass is calming.
You travel all night, without even stopping for sleep. For once, you are happy to stay awake.

Finally, after an eternity of running, you tire.
Stopping, and falling to your knees, you look to the horizon. Between the trees you see the rising sun.
It is a new day.
Just then, you feel a tug at the back of your mind.
It's Her.
The Beheaded Queen shows herself before you. Her icy gaze penetrates your soul.
You still remember her shriek of terror, right as your blade severed her neck.
Her blood is still on your boots.
She seems to soften up, and extend a hand in your direction.
You take it.
Touching a ghost is not like what you expected. You do not feel anything, but at the same time you feel something tugging you upwards.
She points somewhere in the distance.
A lake.
The water is clear, and you are still thirsty.

You could try to fashion your black mask into a makeshift container (since technically it is just a sack you put on your face).
Or you can always get creative: find animals and use their hide for leather to make a container, or something else.
Your path is influenced by the Ace of Cups, you will always have an abundance of resources.
>>
>>1397676
Do I? I don't actually believe it myself; I'm just voting for what I would consider in character, for a repentant and emotionally-vulnerable former executioner being entreated into something by the ghost of a previous victim.

4 - Four of Cups

You breathe in deeply, looking up at the spirit before you and giving a nod of thanks.
Heading over to the lake, you notice how tired your body has become. You are thirsty. You are hungry. You need sleep.
The lake's water is cool and refreshing. Good for your soul. You revel in this feeling, and drink deeply.
Wiping your mouth with a wrist and rising, you look around the lake, for something you may use to carry more water.
Soon however, you start feeling bloated. You have drunk too much.
Be more careful next time.
Nonetheless, you manage to find something...
And old bucket, thrown away a long time ago.
It will do, for now.
You go back, fill it with water and begin walking over to a small clearing in the woods. On the way there, you even manage to gather some plump fruits.
With a couple of low branches, some weeds and two stones you make a fire. The rest of the day passes uneventfully. Before drifting to sleep, you sing one of the only songs you remember: one about bouncing heads. The irony is not lost on you

In your dreams, you draw a card

> 16 - THE DEVIL

Your dreams are troubled.
Sleeping brings out horrible memories, which you wanted to forget.
Fire that burns your face.
bleeding hands.
a whip on your back.
And the spirits scream. Furious.
Horned monsters with the wings of a bat and the blood of a snake cloud your mind.
With a scream, you wake.

>The Devil's gaze is upon you!

It takes time to catch your breath again.
Those dreams left you troubled...
And the water from your bucket is gone!

The sun is high in the sky.
Picking yourself up, you notice that your hands and clothes are still bloody. Maybe something should be done about that...
With a yawn, you think of what to do today.

Nonetheless, you are feeling watched.

The lake's water is cool and fresh, as you remember it.
Dipping into the water without even removing your clothes, you enjoy this feeling of bliss.
Joining your hands together and starting to pray makes you feel even better.
After a while, you swim out of the lake. Walking back to camp, your steps are lighter and your mind is clearer. For a while, those dark thoughts will stop bothering you.

Humming another gentle song, you gather your things and continue walking.
The forest is rather calm today, so calm that you don't see any animals.

Heading deeper into the woods, it seems that you won't find any traces of civilization for a while.

>The Devil laughs!
Suddently, you feel like everything has got darker.
The bushes are thicker,
The trees are taller, more menacing,
You even start hearing a low growl...
Or maybe it is just your imagination.
Right then, you remember the Teller's words:
They are hunting you down.

Your feet begin moving as soon as you see the shimmer of a blade between two bushes.

> Gifts, prosperity, vigilance.

You dream of a man in the garb of a merchant. A scale is in his hand, and he distributes money to those in need. The poor bow before him, before his kindness. You find yourself bowing too, with a handful of coins tightly clutched to your body. The merchant smiles, moving on.

>The Devil frowns...

Looking down at the money in your hands, you
see a pentagram inscribed on each.

The warmth of a fire welcomes you as your eyes open.
You are lying on the ground. A man in armour is tending to the fire. He has not noticed your awakening. He seems to be muttering a hymn to the Lord.
Behind him, The Beheaded Queen frowns, looking at the fire.

second

although we must talk to the beheaded queen at some point before she disappears again

To clarify, the merchant giving everyone coins was just a dream. Whenever you actually obtain something, a message will flash, like when you got the crucifix

And i see everyone wants to talk with the Knight. Writing now.

As you push yourself up, the Knight of Cups looks up from the fire, pushing a bowl of stew in your direction
"T'is good to see you awake, my good man. Eat, now. You must be tired, to say the least."
He says, giving you a nod.
The Beheaded Queen briefly glances at you, then back at the fire.

You have no words for the kindness this man has shown you, and begin eating in silence.
Soon, however, memories of whatever happened this day come back to your mind.
You find the words to thank the knight, and ask him what happened, how was he able to find you so deep into the forest?
"Pure luck, my good fellow. You see, i am a wandering poet, a dreamer, and it so happened that tonight i would be passing through this same forest. Now i do not know what happened to you, and sincerely, i understand if you prefer not to tell me."
"Also, are you sure you do not want to remove your mask, friend? It dosen't look very comfortable, let me tell you."
You bring a hand up to the black sack that covers your face. You had completely forgotten about it.

>The Devil's gaze abandons you... For now.

Choose:
>Remove the mask
>Keep the mask

Choose:
>Continue talking to the knight (ask something)
>Ask if the two of you may travel together
>Thank him and go on your merry way
>Write-in

But do not abandon it. It is the container of our sins and burdens.
