ITT: we build a history / mythology of a fantasy world, one step at a time. Each post adds to the mythology (unless I veto it, but you guys know the sort of stuff that would shit up the game).

I'll begin.

"The race of Men awoke in darkness. Each man and woman thought themselves alone, for they had awoken in different glades in the great pine forest that covered all the land. There was no sun in those days, only the stars, and the silver light that shone from the moon; and that light did not grace them continuously. For months the Men wandered the land; it was silent and bereft of animals.

But after a time in which each wandered alone, a number of them found one another; and looked upon each other's hair and snow-white skin; and they knew that they were not alone and rejoiced. Together they ascended a slope to a treeless hilltop, and upon it they set a fire, and talked amongst themselves in a primal tongue. They were loathe to venture far from the hill and its orange light for fearing of being lost once again. Seeing the fire, others of the Men began to gather to the hill from far around, and it was named the Firelight Hill."
>>
The stars saw this and smiled. Though they are forbidden one young star chose to come closer and see, but only after the old man moon had gone. As he was young he did not know the rules and he has been forbidden to return to the world of the stars though he is so fascinated by all creatures the thought didn't even cross his mind

The young star was sorrowful when old man moon told him of his fate. But he was still excited by the Men of the hilltop and their firelight, and he settled in the sky above and looked down at them. They, like their light, seemed to be always inconstant, changing from moment to moment even as he watched, so different to the world of the stars.

The people of Firelight Hill took note of him and rejoiced in his light; they named him the Watching Star, and sometimes the Waymarker and the Lesser Light. He saw for the first time Wandering Men come from the silent forest to the hilltop; and he wondered at their origins and delighted in each newcomer.

When the white light of the Waymaker shone upon the skin of wandering men, they turned their heads after it. Some laughed as the light flooded into them and some ran away down the slope and into the forest. They carved their homes in the ground and lived in fear.
Nevertheless, when people of Firelight Hill went to sleep, the Watching Star would dive behind the mountains, looking for the missing with motherly care.
>>
>>1283458
For fear of the return of the Watching Star, the men dug deep. The ground was cold, but it was dark and comforting. Many missed the warmth of Firelight.

None missed the Watching Star.

So they dug and dug and dug.

Then one day they felt heat.

A number of Men, away from the Deep Men, choose to remain in the grace of the Watching star. Soon great vehemetical worship was borne at the star.
From the Star abiding Men, rises a crafty conniving Shaman.
>>
>>1283558
This Shaman would become known as Bae Sinja, the Spreader of Lies. For he desired great power, and upon seeing the masses prostrating themselves before the watching star he could not help but to feel envious of the morning star. For too long he lived in wonder of the Watching Star.

Every morn he would wake, he would see it rise and every night he see it set. And so, he hatched a plan, a sinister one.

Communing with the spirits of which he drew his power, he cast a magic that made the Watching Star set for a millennia.
>>
>>1283580
The less faithful stayed on the hill but lit a fire and the other sat waiting for the star to come. Forgotten sensations started flowing through their bodies. They knew hunger, so the ate the trees. They knew cold, so they weaved clothes out from the fibers of the trees. As they made their way through the woods, turning peaceful glades into wastelands with their everlasting hunger, they found the tunnels of the Deep Men and discovered all the wisdom they had gathered, painted on the walls and the crust of the trees. They learned about fear, learned that all life rose from the surface of water (the enemy of fire) and that only faith would save them from him, he who took the star down from the sky and was known as Bae Sinja. Feared Bae Sinja. Had faith in Bae Sinja.

The Men-Who-Swim, beasts from the waters, raise periodically from their nifty lairs under the sea. They upon regular men not of scales and fey gills. Deep Men and Star Men led by Bae Sinja war against Men-Who-Swim, but the Men-Who-Swim are more evolutionarily deadly with their poisoned hand talons and armored scaled skin.
>>
>>1283644
The merfolk as they would later be called, were a tribe of much pride and little frivolity. They saw the land dwellers as a scourge upon the land, tearing up the earth wherever they went. The men of the Deep were unknown to these warriors, who lived upon the sea in harmony with it's inhabitants. The war grew and grew and the discover only added fuel to the flames of war as the poundings of industry pounded quicker and quicker, weapons became keener, the eternal night grew redder and redder still. It's tendrils of darkness dyed a harsh maroon by the causalities of war.

This was a time of great suffering.

And with great suffering comes the blades of death. Famine struck throughout the small and large communities, struck those involved or not with the war. Diseases spread rampantly through the crowds as people fell ill on the streets while they were lively and hearty merely the day before. The last blade may have been the most destructive as it was the blade if hope.

The fight lasted for decades as many heros were born and died nameless and no breach was opened in any of both fronts. Defections and impressments increased as well as famine and disease. Even the most despicable of men would drop a single tear for this senseless massacre.
So did Bae Sinja's eyes one morning, shining bright.
''He's mad'', everyone thought as he, old and deranged, ran across the waves of men with the Spirits in his side and swoop his long dowser cane through the hordes of merfolk. The sky was beautiful on fire and soon a thousand corpses were stirred by the tides along with his.
Those who still remembered the Watching Star, found hope in his sacrifice. Free from its constraints, the Watching Star would rise once again.

This battle became known as the Battle of the Firey Sky.

The remnants of the Men-Who-Swim who dwelt still in the Northern Sea despaired, and a sorrow and a great hatred of the Ground-Walkers was in their hearts. Yet though their hatredand anger was within them, they acted not due to fear, and kept refuge beneath the ocean's surface.

The Watching Star rose once more, and all the Men of the Firelight were enamoured of his silvery light; and he was known also in that time as the Reawoken Star, and as the Light of Ancient Tales. The old legend of Bae Sinja was repeated by the elders, but it was said by some that the star had risen to mark their triumph over the Men-Who-Swim. By those Men he was known as the Star of Triumph.

After the death of Bae Sinja; who was also known as the Imprisoner, and the Tyrant of the Hilltop, and the Bringer of Darkness; there was confusion amongst the Men of the Firelight as to who should lead them. Above all, they seeked a leader who was just and truthful.

During the shifting sands of confusing amongst Men on the new leader of kindness, a divergent group of Night-Men come away from the Deep-Men. They only seem to walk amongst the night, when the Reawoken Star cycles the land, not covering certain areas.

The Night-Men spread throughout the breeds of pure Men and drink their very blood as if cattle. They hide in plain sight. Clans of Men of come wise to these false masked creatures, interrogating clansmen or women who only walk the hours of Night and never during the day,
>>
>>1285280
The Reawoken Star saw much sorrow in the lands of Men beneath him, and he despaired. But Old Man Moon angered as a cold white flame. He would not set as had he always in ages past, but instead moved hither and thither through the sky, pursuing the Night-Men wherever he found them. And the Night-Men fled from him, cursing his light; and hid themselves in caves and cellars, and in the underground fortresses of the Deep Men. They named him the White Knife, and hated and resented him greatly.

Clans of Men slowly become more advanced as centuries pass, a particular of intellect tribe forms a City-State domain, forgoeing hunting and gathering for a stationed domain of humanity.

Roolin Staganaka begins a legacy of Staganakian's that lord over the city-state named Lemphis.
>>
Oh, by the way, it's fine to go back to other parts earlier the history and add to them.
>>
>>1285670
Of the founding of Lemphis, such at least is recorded in lore:

Roolin Staganakian was a Man of the Firelight, but he cared little for the hilltop flame. He was a wanderer, and he revelled in solitude, and in the private joy he took in the quiet hidden valleys of the world; but above all he loved light of the Moon.

One day he was out walking, far from the town, treading through green and unpathed land. He journeyed so far that he lost sight of the Reawoken Star, and had no other guide but the light of Old Man Moon, the Greater Light. In those days, Old Man Moon was still wandering the land in pursuit of the Night-Men; and Roolin followed him as he travelled.

After the two had travelled many miles, the Moon tired, and stopped to rest; there he stayed for a year and a day. In this place Roolin made his home; other Men gradually came to join him, and at length Lemphis was founded.
>>
>>1285814
Clans of Men who favored the old ways of travel are confused of the oddity of Lemphis. Through some passings of Lemphis, differing clans have different experiences within the city.

Lemphis dwellers begin to despise the "savage" ways of the Clans of Men. After a Nobleman's son was found drained of blood, the Nobleman- Bruten Lennius blamed the Clans of Men.

He made the argument that their incessant traveling made Night-Men follow in their wake in hope of prey. Lennius in his raged to the current standing Staganakian king, Yusanii Staganakian to campaign against the paleo-going Clansmen.
>>
>>1285904
Yusanii heard the Bruten's request, and he was troubled. The noblemen were mostly in favour of the war, seeing in it opportunities for the furtherance of their wealth, power and glory. But the common civilians feared the rumour of war, despairing for their families and livelihoods. And many of the civilians had journeyed to Lemphis from the clan countries within a handful of generations, and were loathe to make war upon their brethren.

Yusanii wished to act righteously, yet he was reluctant to appear weak before the noblemen. And so he climbed the Star Tower, and dwelt in solitude at its peak for eight days, pondering. On the ninth day, he summoned his loremaster to him, the crone Yttriel. She spoke to him of the great sorrows of the war against the mermen, at the end of the Age of Darkness during the tyranny of Bae Sinja the Imprisoner, and counselled him to avoid the war.

Yusanii descended the Star Tower and announced his intention: to refuse the suggestion of war, but to bar the city from entry by newly arriving clansmen from that point on. The noblemen were restless then, and blame fell upon Yttriel, and they were resentful. Bruten displaced himself to the outskirts of the city, and would not keep company with Yusanii.

Thought we needed new characters:
Forty years before the Night-Men showed, deep into the tunels, where the heart of the earth provides the Deep Men with warmth and shelter, a child was born from a hunchback called Greeda, rejected by all men for she was so deformed all the lights on her way would snuff out and the stars would run away from her. Nobody knew who the father of this child was, but they knew her name was Rosemund and she had a bright future: she inherited her mother's ugliness, yet she had proved to have a gift for archery, even as a child.
The year she turned thirtysix, she heard of an archery tournament in Lemphis. She put a hood and a veil on and she travelled through the forest in the night, avoiding the Lesser Light. At the edge of the city, she discovered the recent corpse of a man hanging by his neck from a huge pinetree. This didn't surprise her at all: she had heard about the methods used against Night-Men in that godforsaken city.
By the time the Wandering Star rose above the mountains, she had already reached Lemphis, lifeless and clean.
All the buldings lie in perfect circles around a tower with a small silver platform on top: the Star Tower. Two hours of walking into the forest, to the east, there lies a huge colosseum, used for tournaments, fights, executions and other public events. She announced herself as Rosemund, the champion of the Deep Men and stayed in some cheap inn for five days before the tournament. It went like this:
One of the champions shot an arrow through three armors, the next shot through the magic wood from a northern pine, the next, all the way through the body of a living merfolk...; Rosemund held the bow for hours, scanning the sky for a sensitive spot and shot, taking down a little star, stained in the blue of the sky. She was given the first prize.
During the banquet, convinced people would appreciate her for her actions rather than for her looks, she unveiled her face and all the lights went out. She got arrested for allegedly cooperating with the Night-Men and she still awaits her trial on prison, powerless without her bow.

Of Teluin the mariner:

Teluin was a wanderer; he had a great love of water. He would listen carefully to the gushing of running streams; he would gaze enchanted at the reflections of the Greater and Lesser Lights in the surface of calm pools.

Journeying in the forest, far from his home in the lands of the Men of the Firelight, he came to the Northern Wasteland. Here, the Wrath of Bae Sinjae had scorched the land for a mile around in the Battle of the Firey Sky. In the centre of the wasteland grew a vast pine tree, strewn with helms and shields and bloodstained breastplates; and with skulls and ribs and shoulderblades. He climbed the tree, and hew from it a great branch, and fashioned it into a mighty ship. To crew it he took spirits of the tree: they were creatures of bone and wood-bone, dressed in the armour of the dead and armed with iron swords.

Together, they pulled the ship to the shore of the Northern Sea, though it took them a year of toil. Then the ship was manned, and Teluin took command, and set sail over the sea's dark waves.
