It’s been almost a month since the fall of Thorns, and you’ve covered a lot of distance. For the past month, you’ve been spending most of your days traveling through the woods, avoiding the roads until you felt you were a safe distance away from Thorns, and anyone else who might recognize you. It’s been tiring, walking for so long, but you’ve handled it far better than you thought you would. Despite your lack of resources, you’ve managed well enough on your own as well. You made a quiver of arrows using sticks and stones in the forests, they might be a bit primitive but they’ll be as effective as any other arrow in your hands now. Finding food and shelter hasn’t been an issue either, it almost seemed as if Creation itself was looking out for your well-being at times. Finally, after weeks of traveling, you came across two people on a horse-drawn wagon while traveling the road to Varsi. It seems they had business there as well, so they were kind enough to let you ride along with them.

It was through them you heard the stories of what’d happened to your home.

Word of Thorns’ downfall has already spread far across the East. People spoke of the city’s downfall, how the scent of death filled the city streets and the sky rained burning blood on it’s citizens. How the dead were too numerous to count, and the survivors begged for surrender at the invading undeads’ feet. Of the colossal beast, The Juggernaut, and the grim fortress it carried on its back. And finally, they spoke of the one who led the attack, who ground the city underneath his heels. The Mask of Winters.

Supposedly, some within the city survived the attack, but they now lived in constant fear under the shadow of the Juggernaut. The dead now ruled Thorns, and the Mask of Winters was her master. Some say the Confederacy of Rivers has called for a meeting to discuss Thorn’s new ruler, and how to best react. Beyond that, however, the kindly travelers who picked you up knew little else.

Finally, the city of Varsi comes into view, and you bid your companions farewell. This was your first time seeing another city outside of Thorns; You’d always wanted to see the outside world but you’d wished it were under better circumstances. Outside the city, camps of parked caravans can be seen. You recognize the marks on their wagons as that of the Guild, Creation’s largest trading organization. Varsi was the last seaport before the long road to Thorns, so it wasn’t surprising to see them here. From the commotion coming from them, you wager they must be bartering goods with the city’s people. You had no coin on you, but they say the best place to hear news was at a Guild caravan. However, your main interest was in taking a ship up the Grey River towards the Hundred Kingdoms. You had no money to pay for passage, but surely there was some work you could find in the city to pay for it; Perhaps you could find work at one of the taverns like you once did in Thorns?
