A worker ant turns her head towards you, and taps her antennae against the ground in a rhythmic sort of fashion. She proceeds down one of the many long, narrow corridors. You follow her, and are met by another thousand or so of your sisters, all walking in two straight lines - one line towards a destination, and the other coming back towards the brood.

A veritable wall of soldier ants protects some central chamber, and behind them is the queen. Her majesty, standing twice as tall as yourself and her exoskeleton catching what little light there is, shining like an antique lacquered box (but more beautiful than any man-made object could ever hope to be) sits in her throne room laying pearly white eggs. If insects could cry, you might tear up at the sight of her divine beauty.

From the mound atop the colony to the picnic basket is an infantry line made up of hundreds of your sisters, all of whom you would lay your life down for in the blink of a compound eye, just as they would do for you.

Inside the picnic basket is half a watermelon, wrapped in plastic. There are ants underneath the plastic, suffocated or drowned in the sticky juices. The dead lie on their backs, and are being stepped over by more ants, carrying pieces of the fruit in their mandibles.
