You are a fresh recruit to your hometown's City Guard, young and inexperienced, you aspire to become a distinguished adventurer and hero, but lack the funds and experience to do more than fend off the occasional slime, and even then you usually rely on the help of your coworkers. With no legendary weapons, latent magical power, or wise old mentors, it looks like you'll be stuck as a lowly guard for forever, but you refuse to give up on your dream!

For now though, you need to hurry to your station! You're meant to help one of the more experienced guards look over the west gate this morning, but a late start to your day threatens to make you tardy to your first shift! Sticking to the main roads, you're certain you'll be late, but maybe if you cut through the alleyways you'll make it in time...

First time doing this thing, gonna take a while before I figure out how to best do these things, so I'm trying to start off small and simple. I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!
>>
>>1218649
It would probably go a little better if you offered the choices in the OP, bud.
>>
>>1218649
Take the alleyways.
>>
>>1218649
Hmm, usually you'd add some options to the OP. Like:
>>Go by the main road
>>Take the alleyways
>>Write in

But eh, I'm still pretty interested. I say take the alleyways.
>>
>>1218649
>Take the alleyways.
>>
>>1218692
Take the alleyways

>>1218673

Yeah, I realized that about three minutes after posting this when I finally started reading the other stories here. I found this board near the end of my lunch at work and got excited and kinda rushed this post with little forethought or general "hey let's see how these things are done first"-ness... I'll be hopefully doing this correctly from here on.

Eh? Oh, connecting my phone to my house internet changed the IP of my device. That's why I have/had a different... Color bar thing... Gonna disconnect and see if this post has my previous IP

Deciding that arriving on time is worth the risk of whatever you might encounter in the shadows of the narrow alleyways, you dart to your right and begin making your way through the various turns that, you think, will lead you closer to your destination.

Having grown up in this town, you are familiar with the layout, but admittedly do not have much experience navigating through them. Your parents warned you of the many unsavory sorts that would lurk here for unsuspecting prey, and the few times you were either too desperate or feeling particularly bold never led you too deep to encounter anything more than an unsettling gaze.

Today however, would prove to be different.

"Get off of me!" A woman's voice exclaims, and slowing down so as to not reveal yourself, you peak around the next corner to see a young woman, most likely about your age or a year younger, being harrassed by two only slightly older men. The three of them all wear the worn down clothes of those often more at home in these alleyways than anywhere else, and one of the men aims a knife at the woman while the other attempts to restrain her.

"Look, we may not know all the details, but we know you were given something important. Just give it to us, and we'll let you go. If not, well..." The man with the knife speaks calmly as he hovers the knife only an inch away from the girl's throat. He seems relaxed, and sure of himself, but nothing really gives you the feeling that he's particularly dangerous. The other man is taller and lankier, and from the way he had struggled to pin the girl's arms to the wall, you don't think he's any more of a threat.

The woman looks far more angry than afraid, and offers to words of surrender, but has stopped trying to break out of the lanky man's grip, and seems to be debating her next move. You see no weapons on her, just a few now empty pouches, that were probably containing the scattered coins and various junk that now litters the ground around them.

>It's time to do your job, get out there and protect the girl!
>This is a waste of time, and quite frankly none of your business. You've gotta get moving to the west gate if you don't want to be late! Your job could be on the line!
>Something else (write in).

>>1218849
>It's time to do your job, get out there and protect the girl!
Stop right there criminal scum!

I wasn't expecting the idea of trying to play up the heroic protector of justice angle, I was originally gonna have a fight break out, but how about we roll to see if you can bluff your way to appearing confident and experienced.

From what I've seen, it's 1d100 per player? Each roll is added and divided by the total number of rolls, and higher rolls are better?
>>
>>1219019
Well, depends on what system you want to use. You can use that or you can use, lets say, the best of the three first rolls.
>>
Rolled 88 (1d100)

>>1219019
The criminals shall crumble under out steely gaze the shall wet there cloths and cry for there mothers as we cart them to prision!

Some people use adverage of rolls some use best of three
>>
>>1219060
Hmm... Okay I guess, that can work. I'll go with that.

Imma pass out for now though, I'll write whatever happens when I wake up.
>>
>>1219067

>>
Rolled 20 (1d100)

>>1219019
>>
>>1219019
Keep at it qm, we'll teach ya. Though it would be prudent to find a name and a trip
>>
>>1220138
Had to look up in thw FAQ to figure out how to do that, but I think I got it!

>>1219065
Going by best of three this first roll here already wins. Wish I had seen it before passing out for the night.

You inhale sharply as you step out from around the corner, and hold a hand out in a stopping gesture. "Halt!" you bark with a voice that booms with confidence and barely restrained rage. You had hoped to mimic the voice of your captain, who spoke as if the very thought of injustice was personally offensive, and you feel certain that it worked as you see the man with the knife nearly drop it as he jumps in surprise.

"Step away from the woman and put your hands against the wall!" You command, mentally double checking how you are holding you spear, and making sure you look every bit the experienced defender of justice that you're pretending to be. The lanky man let's go of the woman, and looks over to his companion.

"What do we do? Why's there even a town guard in a place like this!?" The other man glances at you, as if trying to size you up, but as you begin marching towards them he looks away, and takes a step back.

"I don't know, let's just get out of here!" He says, and with that they begin to run away!

>After them! You cannot let these villains get away!
>Who cares about them? We need to make sure the woman is alright! Maybe help her gather her things?
>Hey, I'm sure your captain would be proud of you stopping a crime, but you still need to get to the west gate!
>Write in

Collect her things and try to hurry her out of here or we are gonna be late.
>>
>>1220381
>Who cares about them? We need to make sure the woman is alright! Maybe help her gather her things?

second this

>Who cares about them? We need to make sure the woman is alright! Maybe help her gather her things?
By the book (because that's all we know). Get her name, take her account of the crime and ask if she knows the two individuals.

You quicken your pace as the thugs run away, but rather than give chase, you stop as you approach the woman still sitting on the ground.

You remember why you're here, your goal of making it to the west gate, but you cannot in good conscience leave her here. You rest your spear against the wall away from her, and begin picking up the items the thugs had left scattered about.

As you gather the items, you take note of them, and realize they are far from the junk you had classified them as earlier: A few copper coins, and even a very old but still valuable silver coin, a few thin pieces of metal that you suspect are for picking locks, and a golden bracelet that's either a well cared for family heirloom, or rather recently stolen. The fact that these things were taken from her, and that the thugs from earlier paid them no mind, give rise to two suspicions.

One: While this woman was a victim only minutes ago, she's far from innocent, and likely makes a very modest living as a theif of some sort.

Two: Whatever the thugs were looking for, they weren't just after money, they wanted something specific.

As you hold these gathered objects in your hands, you turn to the young woman, who has been suspiciously silent and still this entire time. She sat there, her hands covering her face, and after a brief moment, you noticed a tear she failed to hide as you heard the sound of a sob she failed to restrain.

>She's crying, but she's still clearly a criminal. Assure her that she's safe, and that if she comes willingly, she's likely not to be punished too severely for her theft.
>Forget that! Confiscate the items, retreive your spear, and tell her she's under arrest!
>Reassure her that she's safe, and return the items to her. Pretend you didn't figure anything out, and offer to escort her to the main roads as you make your way to the west gate.
>Maybe confiscate some of the items for yourself but let her go? You did take this job in part for the money.
>Write in.
>>
>write in
I think the thief accusation may be jumping the gun. Modify the first option.

>She's crying, but you suspect there is more to the situation. Assure here that she's safe, and that it would be best to bring her in for a full report

"It's alright, they're gone." You say, trying to sound both comforting and compassionate while maintaining at least a portion of that aura of confidence and strength that had encouraged those thugs to run away. You weren't about to say a line as cheesy as "I'll protect you", but you did want her to feel that way.

"I-I'm sorry, I know they're gone, it's just-" The woman had spoken as she wiped the tears off her face, but cut herself off as she looked at the items you were trying to hand over to her. It was clear by the look on her face that she had forgotten about the items they had taken from her, or at least some of them, as she mumbled a quick "thank you" before hurriedly stuffing the money and incriminating objects into the pouches around her waist, giving a quick glance towards your face as she did so, as if trying to gauge your reaction to what she hoped you hadn't noticed.

It was at this point that you finally got a good look at her, the details you had previously discounted as irrelevant to the task at hand now rushing to the front of your mind. The woman has blue eyes, and dirty blonde hair pulled into a short ponytail. Her clothes are patched together from various bits of cloth, frayed at the edges and with various old stains that couldn't be removed. It all seems to be sewed together well, from what you can tell, and comprises the majority of her clothing, from her pants to the layers of shirts that seem a little out of place in the current season. Her boots are only marginally better, looking like they could fall apart at any second but still in one piece for the moment. The her belt of various pouches is easily the highest quality article of clothing she possesses outside of the golden bracelet that's most likely not hers anyway.

The layers of shirts help to hide her figure, which you suspect is delibrate, but judging from her face, she seems more attractive than average. You certainly feel a little flustered staring at her like this, and quickly switch back to guard mode before you risk doing something stupid.

"I'm heading to the west gate." You explain, an easy explanation that helps buy you time to remember what you should probably do next. "I believe it would best if I escort you there. There'll be another guardsman at the gate, and we'll be able to take a full report on the thugs that attacked you once we get there." You suggest, trying to be assertive without being accusatory. You aren't quite sure how she'll be treated by the other guards, but this will at least buy you time to learn more about her.

"O-okay..." She replies, sounding distant, but giving a small nod as you retrieve your spear and resume you walk down the alleyways.

You'll have two choices to make here next. One deciding what you want to ask from her, and another choosing how much of yourself you want to reveal to her, which will be in my next post. Apparently I'll go over if I add it here
