Insas, 8th of Deom

You had a blissful sleep in your bed, another dream of flying across the Sacre sea brushed your mind. Your tiny stomach grumbled; it is alright, mother will come soon today, she is on her way back from visiting a friend in the nearby village.

Instead, a hard knocking on your cottage shook your bones late at night. That is odd, Mother wou-

"Little Aexe! Little Aexe!" it was Uyrl the village's hunter, he never sounded like that. This is strange. You climbed out the bed hurrying to the door.

There he is, why is he...crying? why is he... all bloody?

The hunter hugged you, tear trailing from his eyes "What is wrong, Uncle?" this man didnt have blood ties with you and yet you and your mother consider him one; he was almost the father you never had.

Tears trailed from his eyes "Thank the goddess....Little Aexe..." he looked at you straight in the eyes "The Wolves...they have claimed Sendah, your ma..."

.
.
.

Milas, 16th of Deom

Your world has changed with the departure of your sole bloodkin. You are merely a girl of fourteenth winter. You cried and cried till your eyes ran dry. There is naught to do for her.

Uyrl didn't rest until he killed the last pup of the wolf pack responsible for your ma's death. the Crowoods he didn't wait for any passing adventurer or the like. He found but two bloody pages of your ma's alchemy book in their lair. The rest of the book...torn to shreds or inside the wolves' carcasses.

With the death of your ma, plenty o' eyes hovered over your small cottage and even yourself. Some men in the village weren't kind like your uncle. Luckily, he intervened just before anyone would declaring that you are his kin to shelter and take care of. There are some unspoken rules in the Islands that even the vilest of men respect it.

He was laughed at and mocked for said action; uncle lived in a small shack at the edge of the crowood, he couldn't house another child. The Dram he earns from hunting is not enough for you both....Despite his role, he was always looked down upon. Yet, he never raised his voice against anyone in the village. It wasn't in his nature.

Your ma was the village's alchemist , she knew how to concoct potions from various ingredients. She barely allowed you to lift a finger while she brewed said potions. Her legacy remains in your cottage; her memory will not fade. you will take her place, you will be the alchemist for the occasional travelers and adventurers and the rest of the village.
>>
Milas, 21th of Deom

With the help of uncle, you managed to go through those first dozens of days. He dare not to live inside your cottage despite your constant pleas, instead, he would come here regularly to check on you. However, he would sit down and eat with you.

In the meantime you have been busy. With little or no prior knowledge in the field of alchemy, you expected things to be harder for you at the start.

The first thing you did was sorting out what was in the cottage
http://pastebin.com/gk1ip4Ph

It was a crying shame that you couldn't find the ledger, you have to set the prices by yourself

Like any business, you aim to make profit anything you sell must at least cover its original cost ,then, you could add extra dram as you see fit.

Haggling is an important aspect of the trade. Just because you are a young girl, that doesn't mean that you can't have a silver tongue. You must earn respect out of your customers which falls into two categories;

Villagers , Your kinsmen , they will be looking for aliments most of the time. you should be careful; your reputation lies in their hands.

Adventurers , Or rather Farlanders ....those who seek glory and fame in the ruins and caverns littered all over the islands. If that was not enough. Beast roam the isles waiting to be slain by the fair adventurers. Those should fill your pockets with Dram if you know how to treat them accordingly.

There are some potions and ingredients in the cottage that are unknown to you, you looked at the torn pages of your ma's alchemy book. It had both some recipes and a quick description of certain ingredients.

http://pastebin.com/F9TThycB
http://pastebin.com/gk1ip4Ph

You have many tasks ahead of you:

-You must set a certain working time. You have to keep mind to save some time for gathering ingredients and making them. Days of the week are: Insas, Munsas, Dilas, Goenas, Milas, Diras and Yrdas
-A Sign could help you greatly especially when it comes to wandering adventurers. You must seek a carpenter for that.
-A Crier could spread the word much faster. Your cottage is somewhat far from the main village. A Scribe can help as well with flyers in hotspots for adventurers like a tavern.
-An Escort is almost a must while gathering ingredients. you have faith in uncle but even him can't handle bandits or beasts by himself.
-A Guard for the shop is not a bad idea either, you have little trust in those farlanders.
-you must seek further and better recipes....it is the source of your profit. that could be achieved by asking another alchemists in the isles (though most of them are too stingy to share anything), buying or finding certain books for knowledge....or you could experiment on rats and pigs to see if your experimental potions/paste/oils are working.
-There are various essentials that can be could from farmers, glassblowers, brewers and so on.

Today is Milas, 21th of Deom , you have a lot to do

You thoroughly looked through what you had in stock and what little recipes you had. While you had the tools for job, you lacked some ingredients. you had to either gather or buy what you can from the village.

You were sorely disappointed. it is alright, this profession requires a lot of patience.

>Set a working time for the shop
early in the morning. Set the waters to boil while you're shaking off sleep and planning what to do for the day. Sleep early.
>>
>>1072024
>>Set a working time for the shop
Work in the morning to afternoon, we should take at least a day off a week to forage if we get the escorts to do so
>>
>>1072036
an example for a working time is every day from sunrise to sunset except Diras and Yrdas where you can gather ingredients, buy certain items, brew potions or take a respite.

in a similar fashion to >>1072041
>>
>>1072045
Would testing new recipes count as work? Or is that something we do in our time off
>>
>>1072050
i suppose
keep in mind that our work is customer based meaning that we can sit idly for hours until a customer enters our cottage.

feel free to ask any question.
>>
>>1072045
In that case, the shop is open morning and late afternoon. Noon/lunch is reserved for emergency/commissions/reading.

Weekly schedule is
Shop - Shop - Closed - Shop - Closed - Shop - Closed
Closed days are more often spent gathering than resting, but some stuff is kept long boiling to fool people to thinking the place is occupied.
>>
>>1072055
In that case I would say we should work from morning to a few hours past noon everyday except Insas and Geonas. That should leave some time to buy things in town we need everyday and two days to forage
>>
>>1072061
>>1072062
both options are viable.

should you agree on one, or should i roll?
>>
>>1072065
Eh we both agree on working hours per day, lets just take 3 days off and revisit it later if we ended up getting more regular business down the line
>>

>>1072061
>>1072062
with a schedule set in mind, you wanted it to be known. Reyelk is a Farlander who settled in the village five years ago. He brings fine carpentry arts from the exotic lands of Heildemme where the sun scorches one's skin if left unprotected. Your ma has dealt with him before. His prices are reasonable, you wagered.

You will need him to make a sign for you. You had no plans to change the shop's name for the moment but if so, you know where to go.

you locked the door behind you before leaving, you wore a blue silky hood, your ma loved to see you with it. but you had to admit, you were getting a bit old for it.

Uncle had a shack near Crowood, you have been there a couple of times before. It was always the same; small, bloody and reeks of death. Uncle made a living out of pelts as well although, he hasn't gotten any good game in a while.

You heard a pitiful whimper up ahead near your destination , as you made it towards the shack, you found uncle holding a wounded puppy with vicious bite marks all over its body. it was withering in pain.

A sigh of relief escaped his lips as he saw you "Little Aexe....Bless the goddess, can you help me? She has little time left in this world. I found her like that. These bites are the work of small beasts ...."

>Uncle, You have to do it, end her suffering

Uncle nodded before entering his shack quickly, he brought pieces of cloth to wrap it around the bleeding puppy.

Both of you hurried to the Village. Some villagers gave you concerned looks but none intervened. You could feel it as of late...this bitterness not only towards you but in general. It was rare to find decent folks with warmth in their hearts and souls.

"Open up, Aile, damn you!" Uncle knocked on the door in a rude fashion. The healer wasn't on good terms with Ma....or everyone else in that matter. She always consider herself superior to everyone around her. That is somewhat true but there is no need her altitude.

Luckily, she was just behind you and uncle, she were to open her establishment, Aile always started somewhat later than the usual.

She had a pale white skin with short black hair. Her was taller than the average women in the isles which of course boosts her ego even more. She had an unseen pride in her garments. It was not a surprise to see her wasting her Dram on the best she could fine. She loathed jewelries for some reason though.

"Oh yes, bash more on my door, Uyrl, I reckon it will heal this sack of vermin faster..."

"Have a heart for once, She is bleeding to death!" Uncle's face was turning to red from anger with veins bulging around his rough face.

"As if i care..." came the bitter reply "I don't see any Drams up front , are you taking me for a fool, hunter? 100 Dram or naught"

>[Say nothing, let Uncle deal with her]

"I will say the same thing I said to your late mother, Kindness does not put food in your mouth. Let that be an aspiring lesson to you, little girl. Another thing : Do not carry that obvious sack of Dram with you. You are begging for cutthroats." The healer noticed the sack bulging from your left side.

Uncle gritted his teeth, he refused to take a Dram from you. He handled you the bleeding puppy "Take care of this poor soul, little Aexe, I know someone who will lend me the coin"

>Please hurry, Uncle!

Guess at this point we have no choice, but we can at least be bitter about it.

"Miss Aile, what good is food on a table if you don't trust anyone enough to share that table?"
>>
>>1072152
bitter would be....counterproductive, to getting what we need out of her
>>
>>1072148
Defeated, Uncle stood silent as you handled the bleeding puppy to the healer. "Do step inside."

With a grin of a sly, The healer went inside "Normally i deal with...not so smart individuals but i can handle animals with ease, what an interesting array of bite marks.....hmmm...."

Uncle was boiling from the inside but he chose to swallow his words. The two of you watched silently as the heal staunched the wound applying some pastes that your ma used to make to eliminate any chance of future infections, Aile has snitched the puppy's wounds showing a great deal of skill.

"This dog has lost at least a third of its blood, luckily for it, I have a vial of Butaen Blood last one in stock too. No need for charging you more; your payment is more than enough."

Your Ma spoke of these creatures once. A slug like creature living deep in the belly of the earth. Its blood is compatible with any other blood with few exceptions.

"Hunter, Do tell me, where did you find this dog? I have never seen these bite marks..." said the healer as she administrated the blood to the puppy.

"Neither did I, I found it on my way to hunt some hares, It left a trail behind but i was more into saving her at that moment..."

The puppy started to calm down a bit "Of course, With the surge of Farlanders in the isles, it is not a surprise for new species to be introduced in the isles. These are bits of a swarm of little creatures with a powerful bite force. If you value your life, don't track the trail by yourself."

Uncle smirked "Is that a hint of concern i hear in your voice?"

"Hardly, I loathe the lose of naive customer like yourself...." Her face grew serious "Speak with the Elderman, I think we might be dealing with a start of an infestation in the Crowoods. "

Aile addressed you "The dog should be fine, rest and a decent meal for a week is a must."

>Thank you, Miss!

I don't see what we need from her more than accusing her of being a lonely and unloved woman. It would definitely feel good if we managed to upset her as well as warn her that we're not afraid to bite back.
>>
>>1072163
recipes. Knowledge about ingredients. Connections to her suppliers.

Start with getting what we can for free, then improve enough to be respectable without begging for help. THEN bite back to position ourselves as equals.
>>
>>1072167
But why would she provide any of that? Puppy eyes aren't going to work on this woman. She disliked mother as well, and considering that we're a threat to her business she'd only be hurting herself by sharing anything she knows.

If we're going to get any respect out of her, I'd say the way to do it is by being forceful and showing her that she won't get to step on us again.
>>
>>1072171
>But why would she provide any of that?
She already gave hints about the blood and infestation. Less Puppy eyes, more respect/drive to learn(whether or not she deserves it)

>and showing her that she won't get to step on us again
but she can. She's still the healer. We don't know jack shit about healing. We're going to be a joke if we act cocky now and come crawling at the first mistake.

"Well, since they are fond of dogflesh, we could spill his blood and mix it with a black lure potion..."

She looked at both of you with clear disappointment "I suppose my morbid sense of humor is not up to your taste. Oh well, we know nothing of the nature of these creatures aside from the fact that they are small and can overwhelm the prey in numbers. The mighty hunter before you knows well about the Crowoods, an ancient forest with lots of evil within. We don't want to lure something more vile and sinister than our target. I know an academic in the nearby town, she might help me to identify the creature. For now, be cautious while treading the Crowoods."

After thanking Aile, both of you left quietly. The puppy was licking Uncle's face as he held him.

"We have done some good in this world today, Little Aexe....I will repay you your Drams, I know you need them."

"Kadi it is," said uncle with a grin on his face. He kissed you on the forehead before heading back to the shack.

You looked left and right before, maybe you are overestimating the healer's words. This Isle, Isle Traonkeir has four villages and two towns and a big city Almost everyone knows everyone in your village of Yort . The whole cutthroat business is more likely in the other two towns or the city.

You carried the puppy back to the cottage. You stopped momentarily to look at the shop's sign. "The Mortar and Pestle" is a simple name yet it works. There is no need to change it.

You spent the rest of the evening giving Kadi a well deserved bath. You designated a small pile of cloths for Kadi to sleep into. Other than that, You started to clean the cottage; Dust tends to accumulate quickly in Deom, Treom and Eseom

You heard it; heavy footsteps outside followed by a not so gentle knock. It was already getting late. This can not be uncle (although he should have arrived earlier).

Kadi growled weakly but couldnt move for the most part.

you gently grabbed Kadi and crawled under the bed, it was much easier when you were younger. Ma wanted to have a trapdoor in the bedroom next wint in case of emergencies. You might want to invest some Dram in it later on.

"Sendah, you there? Open up!" a booming, terrifying voice slipped between the cracks of your door.

"Dali' falo...." whoever was outside muttered these words in frustration. The Knocking stopped.

you simply waited a few more minutes before coming out of your hiding place. None was outside, whoever was there has just left. It was too dark outside to even outline who is person was.

Uncle came about an hour later with venison instead of hare meat, perhaps that is why it took him so long.He repaid you the 100 Dram used to treat the Kadi. His surprise was a little doll made out of hay. You were too old for doll, in fact , you are almost a grown woman! still, you only said thank you to uncle.

You spoke about the mysterious stranger knocking on your door. Uncle expressed his concerns. He wished he could be with you at that moment. He urged you to have a guard in the shop for emergency's sake.

After a delicious meal, Uncle has left the cottage, you fed the rats you have before delving into a deep sleep.

you have a couple of options available :

-Sacre Sea [8 hours back and forth] few plants dwells across the shore, however, there are aplenty in the shallow waters [Requires a boat and a diver/fisherman]

-Crowood [4 hours back and forth] the closest of all destination, it is teeming with plants, mushrooms, mosses....and viscous beasts the deeper one would go although it tends to be more peaceful in the morn.

-Arde Fields [16 Hours back and forth] A field brimmed with beautiful flowers for the most part. Little danger can be found skulking between these blessings of the goddess

-River Illena [12 Hours back and Forth] A muddy, shallow river with unqiue plant life and fishes...won't find those in any farland.

As you were about to return to the edge of crowood, you found a corpse of a mauled deer with a strange bulbous red fungus sprouting out of it. This fungus has oozing white liquid from various pores. You....

you didn't have anything but a basket with you at the moment, you should ask the glassblower to make you a glass case. You could put the fungus in the basket but it will ruin other ingredients for certain. Also you do not know what effect does this oozing liquid have.

None that really mattered at the moment, the giggles grew louder and louder, you felt as if they were coming every corner...

i'm sure we can find a small box or something to put it in at home. at worst we'll get a rash or something, but that shouldn't ruin the other ingredients.

Those Brimstone Stone eyes didn't blinked.... not even once. The giggles grew louder and louder. For some reason, none of these little devils came out the shadows to claim your flesh. The deer's cacrass however was overwhelmed for a moment by small and spotted creatures with an array of tiny monstrous teeth with a barbed tail but soon, the swarm was repulsed by the mushroom on top and/or the oozing liquid. It was clear that you wouldn't simply stand idle while they finish the deer of. Once you were out of the edge of the Crowood, you started to run for your life.

You didn't stop running for a good half an hour until you ran out of breath. It was late in the evening by now

You needed some respite after all that running, your blue hood has been earned a couple of unwanted cuts. You ought to fix that.

You found a Son of Yohrm waiting outside of your Cottage. Sons and Daughters of Yohrm are natives to some of the Isles mainly Gasriyaar and Mewiryaar , they resemble humans but perhaps two folds the size with antler-like horns. They tend to outlive humans due to both their long age span and their secular nature.

He looked at you spitting something he was chewing on, he had a long grey beard with a great muscular structure a grandsword rested on his shoulder and a round shield strapped on his back. Scars littered his face, most of them were claw marks.

"A woman called Sendah lived here, where is she, girl?"

>My Ma.....My ma is dead. The wolves got her....
>I Aexe, her daughter.
>[Ignore the Son of Yohrm, head inside]

Should look into getting an escort and something to carry the strange fungus and ooze in. If it can repulse the little beasties like that it would be both useful to have and no doubt valuable to sell.

yep, but chances are these beasts are afraid of it for a reason so let's not forget thick gloves at the very least

The Son of Yohrm Stood up, he looked perturbed "Can't be..."

He did his best to reach your level "what a crying shame....you must be her vahlaa, her daughter...you got her eyes alright."

"y-yes...."you started to cry. The son of Yohrm wiped your tears with the tip of his finger "Easy now, Sendah wouldn't want her wee one to cry like that...If only i got here earlier."

Together you entered inside, "The name is Hadyav, Sendah saved my arm and my ego twenty wints ago. I was foolish at the time but My adventuring days are over; I found me a woman from Heildemme to settle down with. This supposed to be for Sendah for her potions and the sort, I got them from the corners of the world from my years of traveling...i don't know if those will help you, girl"

The Son of Yhorm has given you:

-x5 Jopoo feather [Magical]
-x4 Tien Whiskers [Magical]
-x3 Obsidian Siren's cords [Magical]
-x2 Bitaen Blood Vials [Magical]
-x1 Great Fideon eye [Magical]

" I feel leaving you in this dire state is not right. Is there something Old Hadyav can do for you?"

He clearly can't stay long since he has family to return to, but perhaps he could be convinced to accompany us tomorrow to go look for more of that fungus, once we've acquired the necessary tools of course. Also tell him what we know of it and the beasties so far, maybe he knows more.
