When people can't let anything go here it's usually because of the fact that comments are public. Just consider two people flinging shit at each other as you've no doubt witnessed hundreds of times on 4chan. Are those people really trying to convince each other that the other is wrong? They're trying to convince OTHER people watching on the sidelines.
All sorts of stupid little mental games follow as a result.

At least in the past when things were slower, if you knew you could wait 12 hours before even 3 other posts were made in a thread you wouldn't feel rushed.
But even more importantly you knew that because the thread had a rate of 1post every 4 hours then anyone in the thread is very likely to read everything you write. Thus someone giving a 1 line shitpost is more likely to make them look bad when you type out 5 paragraphs, instead of today where it has the opposite effect because people just want to read the short comments and form their opinions.

But again, like I said this is all mostly because everything is completely public. Lately I've been thinking about email mailing lists as a form of internet communication, and the more I think about it the more perfect it seems to be. Makes me sometimes think about trying out Usenet.
