I have some questions for the developer!

What did you start out doing for programming/software development?
What were some of the first "projects" you did?
Are there any projects you'd suggest as being interesting or fun?
Having been working in the industry for a while, what are the kinds of things people look for? Languages? Experience with certain technologies?
What pays the big bucks?
Is bubble tea really that good?
I want to learn Japanese but I think I'm doing it wrong.
University was lacking for me (which might have been my fault), are there any independent learning materials you'd suggest?
What are your qualifications?
Why don't you want to be a PhD?
You don't really talk about your jobs much. I assume you're employed, are you enjoying yourself?
I want to follow some developers! Suggestions?
What is your favourite ramen?
What is your sleep schedule like right now?

That's all I can think of for now.

> What did you start out doing for programming/software development?

I typed some BASIC games out of a book I found in a thrift shop.
Then I worked on porting software to OS X because that's what you had to do back in the day. There was plenty of time for it because I had no friends.

It's very educational though, teaches you the whole system from top to bottom!

> Are there any projects you'd suggest as being interesting or fun?

Real cool projects: an NES emulator, an MPEG2 player, or just a JPEG reader

Write an imageboard, but don't actually host it anywhere, or it'll get spammed.

Make some bullshit in Haskell and then some in assembler. It's aight.

> Having been working in the industry for a while, what are the kinds of things people look for? Languages? Experience with certain technologies?

What they really look for is the ability to work in a group and learn things without being taught. But how they look for it is by torturing you with interviews where they just ask questions from a data structures textbook.

> What pays the big bucks?

My theory is it should be boring, but not too boring. In between SpaceX and Microsoft.

But if you can live cheaply that doesn't really matter anyway.

> Is bubble tea really that good?

It's full of sugar so it's really bad for you! Plum tea is good.

> I want to learn Japanese but I think I'm doing it wrong.

I should say there's this one site Quora that's doing well at, sometimes, having good posts on it. They attracted an enormous audience of plebs and got them to put effort into their writing somehow. Weird.

>>462032

Depends who you're working with. If it's a free software project you have to rely on other people's free time even if you can trust their skills, so that's hard.

S-tier: Idris, awk, (Objective-)C99, tcsh, x86-64 nasm
A-tier: Hymmnos, OpenCL, Typed Racket, Oz, Swift, Julia, SmallTalk, TADS
B-tier: OCaml, Haskell, PHP procedural style, x86-32, AppleScript, Ruby, TeX, Wren, AviSynth
C-tier: C#, Python, Common Lisp, C++ w/o Boost
D-tier: C++ with Boost
F-tier: PHP frameworks, Python

You should learn ClojureScript and Erlang.

Hey dev, you're a pretty cool guy so I'll try asking here since I've never seen an official response to this question:

Why are VP9(/Opus) webms still not supported? Is there a technical reason or are you just waiting for better browser/tooling support?

Also, do you miss /prog/?

>>
>>463224
They're on the www.4chan.org pages and in the place where the Quick Reply used to be when threads get archived. They're usually pretty obvious, but they also are being allowed to include arbitrary HTML, which often includes scripts that redirect the page to a fake Flash/Firefox/etc. update site. It's worrying because if they can do that, they can also try to install the malware they're peddling through browser exploits. To be safe, it's a good idea to block ads on 4chan.

I'd disagree here. he should definitely host it: learning to deal with the spam and other various abuses by both bots and the user base quickly and efficiently is good "fun" and educational.

I can remember back when I wrote an image board for a Minecraft server community years ago...and having to constantly patch it with new security features every day or so. being forced to say, write a captcha in the span of a few hours, or implement post length limits, or rewrite how posts are indexed, retrieved and bumped...all very quickly with an angry userbase complaining about downtime...yeah, it's definitely hard and fast education to go live as soon as possible.

Sure, if you have time to moderate it by hand, and you don't mind Google penalizing your domain and everything.

If you're learning, make as many mistakes as possible. But if you need to support something for years later, try making as few mistakes as possible. That's my software engineering advice.

BTW, PHP actually has some great bug-fighting features for this, like how data structures are passed copy-on-write to functions, making them immutable! Everyone else didn't discover immutability until they read about Clojure! Of course, like everything else, PHP only did it by accident.

Developer I have a few questions about the chinz

Why is it that sometimes when I load a page, none of my settings load, there's no auto update and all links appear clickable? It happens more often when I'm loading loads of tabs or using my somewhat shitty Android tablet.

Also, when using auto update, say I've the thread has (23) new posts. Sometimes when I scroll to the bottom, it doesn't recognise I've reached the bottom of the page and insists there's new posts despite me scrolling past them. Any idea what's the reason for this?

I've only read about K. The users seem insufferable, just like Lisp, but it looks alright!

Being able to make a program so compact you can see all of it at once, like those languages do, makes it much easier to avoid mistakes. This is also the real advantage of "procedural" programs like Linux - you gather all your relevant data into one method, leave out abstractions, and then you can simply review the code by reading it top to bottom and there's nothing hidden.

Mediocre programmers will reject this and write awful code they think is good because it's "object oriented". Which is a good approach for UI but nothin' else.

>Would the "Board specific" mods be possible?
I'm seconding this question. I really think having a mod or three dedicated to each popular board would be a good idea. They would understand the way a board flows, so they would have a better idea of who should be banned from their assigned board. Of course the people chosen to be board Mods should be selected from willing Janitors with a long and fairly good history.
>>
>>469002
>>470481
fucking this
only a few boards actually have mods who care about it, the others either get moderated by mods who know nothing about the topic or have no mods and have to rely on one or two janitors to clean shit up who can't even hand out bans (which often results in them just giving up and not deleting anything)

Do you think the question about board specific mods would be better as a feedback submission? Or should we just hope Hiro finds this thread? Or maybe I should spend some time making a thread about it and hope he feels like answering it? Even if the answer is "no", I'd still like to know his thoughts on it.

these kinds of captchas don't fucking work

even if you do them right it'll either just shit out another fifty for you to do or it'll say "captcha invalid" when you go to post.

It feels like they're getting insanely frequent lately too since for the last hour or so I've had to either refresh or try to burn through literally dozens of these at minimum just to make two or three posts.

You can switch to the "old" captcha, but Google has made it worse than the new one at this point. But if you want to try it, check "Use Recaptcha v1" in your settings.

>>470622
Sites have to choose to use Google's shitty "captcha" product. There are many alternatives. That said, given the shortage of spam when it was last turned off, I doubt it's needed at all except as a money-raising tool. Perhaps it would be needed on the NSFW boards that actually got routine spam, or during temporary emergencies such as malware outbreaks.
>>
>>470764

lies, /pol/ was inundated with spam for the week during /pol/ harbor when it was turned of on there.
>>
>>470764
>Sites have to choose to use Google's shitty "captcha" product. There are many alternatives.
I think one of the first things people complained to hiro about was the Google CAPTCHA, at which point he contacted Yahoo and was told that they were not willing to accept 4chan's volume of service. I imagine most other places would do likewise (unless you were willing to pay, but then, that's another ball game.)
>>
>>470904
Lies yourself. It was almost 100% genuine 4chan posters, who were fucking around since the flood timers were disabled and the mods weren't enforcing the rules. There were no colored boxes, no save as jse, no cum on cat hiss at penis, no her porn video, no cEAse HoSTinG ThE ClOne, no surgeon is inspired. It looked like [s4s].

http://archive.4plebs.org/pol/search/start/2014-12-07/end/2014-12-08/results/thread/

No spam in sight. If you think any of that is spam, you do not know what spam is, and should cease discussing it. Shitposting is not spam and not something that captchas prevent.
>>
>>470924
lies. /pol/ gets still spammed all the time with people's agenda driven repeating crapthreads even with the captcha... During /pol/ harbor we actually had people selling penis pills.
>>
>>470909
Yahoo doesn't have any such service. They only have their own captcha which they use on their own websites. So Hiroyuki obviously didn't contact anyone.
>>
>>470935
>about 1 post a week
>this is what /pol/ considers spam

Captchas are a measure against automated posting. It has no relevance to faggots who post the same trollpasta every week.
>>
>>470936
I thought I might have been misremembering something, but in >>380851 he quotes someone (from inside 4chan?) saying that it wouldn't work.

>>
>>470937
That's just one example out of dozens or hundreds. And it's almost never once a week, sometimes it's five or six times a day depending on the topic. I understand the difference between agenda driven pasta and spam, but when there was no captcha for the brief time during /pol/ harbor actual spammers did this.
>>
>>470942

>>

The picture has been used to start dozens of identical threads over the course of many months, each with the specific agenda to spread awareness of OPs claims of Muslims going around raping e'rybody. If you think that isn't an example of the very definition of spam then you need to read a dictionary.

It isn't about current news or politics, it's about OPs tabloid-tier news story from years ago spammed repeatedly until someone in a bigger media source notices it, which is never going to happen.

Then it's not spam. Shall I tell you how many Trump threads are posted every day?

/pol/ is not only for anons who are there the whole day. Infrequent visitors exist, too, and they have the right to be informed about political events, too.

I will expand on this. The best designed programs make extensive use of data structures, and sometimes give them methods for things that make sense for that data structure, like converting a vector between euclidean and polar. But 90%+ of the actual procedures in the program are outside of objects.

Recaptcha is broken at a design level. It's bad because it's security by obscurity and has to be changed constantly. These changes aren't sufficiently tested before rollout, resulting in a buggy experience for users. It's not something Google is going to fix; they actually think tracking people's web browsing to guess whether they're a bot is clever.

I can confirm there is a strange bug where, almost immediately after solving a captcha, I submit and get "invalid captcha". I assumed this was just latency between myself and google, or between google and 4chan.

>There can never truly be a flawless 10/10 anime
That's a ridiculous rating system then. I think it is better to use it as rounded-up percentiles, so that the top 10% of anime is a 10/10 (or any other score). Whether you decide to score based on percentile of anime you watch (thus giving an average score of 5.5/10) or on all anime ever made (thus skewing the average above this mark as you hopefully try to watch the best anime) is up to you.
>>
>>475682
If they give you numbers, you should use all the numbers. That's what I think.

For instance, the only good video game review website (http://www.actionbutton.net/?page_id=175) has given plenty of things all of the numbers. Although I gotta say I'm not sure about Secret of Evermore.

So far no movies deserve the top… maybe Millennium Actress and one Kara no Kyoukai movie?

Ghibli movies aren't anime masterpieces because they don't have good enough waifus. That said, the real reason Miyazaki stars so many girls in his movies is he's a lolicon, so it's a start.

It sounds like hidden user accounts that earn karma as they post non-spam. The effect would be similar to passes. You can do this without storing personal info on the server through localstorage, but it's tricky.

BTW I think requiring user registration but still having an anonymous forum is totally fine and would work great if you want to run your own site that way.

Even Wakaba captcha would probably be good enough if you just turned down the captcha spacing. Just change CAPTCHA_SPACING from 2.5 to 0.5 or so. Alternately add some lines through the letters. You want the letters touching each other to make the segmentation step hard.

Also edit %grammar to increase the word length (sometimes it outputs two-letter words!) and get rid of really thin letters like "i" which sometimes don't intersect. It could have been easily fixed instead of just abandoning it when the default settings weren't good enough.

Developer Senpai I'm sorry I need to ask about this again because it seems like a bug
>>466382

Basically 4chan doesn't detect I've reached the end of the page and keeps showing the (2) in the tabs as if there's unread posts.
I'm using Chrome and it seems to happen when the browser Zoom for the page isn't at 100%. I have my browser default to 125% Zoom, as 100 is far too small.

Is there any chance you could fix something like this? It's somewhat of an annoyance. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't
>>
>>476542
I've also occasionally had this problem (and another where there is sometimes a bunch of white space at the bottom of the page) but have never reported it because I have 4chan X and thought that might be causing it. Good to see I'm not the only one with this problem

Just to confirm with Developer I don't use any extensions outside of the Native one
>>
>>476545
The number in the title is from 4chan X (I think the native extension does something similar), so if you're using 4chan X and you're seeing that problem, then at least what's happening on your computer is a 4chan X issue. What browser are you using, and are you using any other extensions besides 4chan X? What version of 4chan X? Does it also only happen to you when you zoom in on the page?
>>
>>476545
Are you using Video DownloadHelper?
https://github.com/ccd0/4chan-x/issues/409
>>
>>476556
Chrome, a bunch of extensions but none which I feel should interact with 4chan (except adblock), presumably the latest version
>>476561
No
>>
>>476565
Sometimes extensions do things you don't expect. Does it happen with all of these other extensions turned off?

And could you at least check whether you're on ccd0's or loadletter's or some other version? There should be a version number in the settings; that should be enough to tell.

i assume bandwidth/storage issue.

I really wish there would be a way to self-sticky a thread, like if a thread has had 50replies in 10seconds to increase the bump limit to 500 up from 250 for boards like /b/, so many good threads have died just because of the tiny bump limit... mook should increase /b/'s bump limit by default to 500 and images to 250...

I'm not 100% sure, but I think developer senpai has silently fixed the issue with the thread updates not working correctly when you're not at 100% zoom.

I'm not sure yet, but I just don't seem to be having the issue at all today so either I'm really lucky or he fixed it.

Why am I sometimes forced to correctly solve multiple captchas? To slow me down? Because that's fucking stupid, and the timer between posts already does that.
>>
>>479250
When it says "multiple correct responses required" it means you failed the first one, but the conciliatory children at Google don't want to tell you that you're retarded (or admit that their algorithm is retarded) so they just give you another one and pretend you got it right.
>>
I'm not sure that's correct. If I post twenty times, each a minute apart, I never get the "multiple required" during the first ten or so, but after a certain point I always get them. I assume it returns to normal after a few hours or something.

You could be correct, but then I've experienced a statistical improbability.
>>
>>480232
Maybe they have some crude Bayesian model and let you through when the probability you're not a bot exceeds a certain threshold.
>>
>>464741

>>
B U M P
>>
>>460120
these shitty captcha images don't work.
>>
>>479991
The more captchas you solve in rapid succession the more you have to solve each time. It's basically a prevention mechanism for if a bot manages to partially break through the captcha or if a human is spamming instead. So if you get into a quick back and forth with someone you'll probably start having to solve multiple captchas pretty quickly.

>>479250
It slows you down as a consequence of bot protection. It's not an intentional mechanism by Hiro or the dev.
>>

It seems they've been using it on dvach for some time.

>>

>>
>>483038

It is, but any implementation 4chan implements wouldn't be good enough and no external implementation outside of Google can handle the load. Hell, 4chan might not be able to handle the increased load that would result from a local implementation. Not really that much to do about it.
>>
>>475682
I used to think like that too. Then I realized, if you can't rate it past 10, that's because 10 is the best it can be. It can't be perfect. And that's why you can't rate it as "perfect". "Perfect" is 11, and you can't rate anything past 10.
>>
>>484285

So, did you have anything to do with the recent April Fool?
Will you keep the 4+ skin as an alternative one?
Could you make it so that typing +Name in the options field generates a random name, maybe with a different color so the people know it's not just you typing it in?
>>
>>484285
The main issue is that people don't actually use the entire scale. For most people, the 1-10 scale is actually a 0-1 scale, because they either rate it a 10 if they like it or a 1 if they disliked it.
This ends up making every aggregated rating worthless because people are incapable of actually rating things correctly.
