The anti-intellectuals who claim distinctions yet can't prove them to be logical are proposing what is called a "No true Scotsman fallacy". Obviously were you to call them out on this, explicitly or otherwise, they would call you a freshman in highschool who just learned what a fallacy was, or similar, without actually even attempting to prove your equating what they say to a fallacy to be wrong.
