Is MPV better than MPC-HC?
>>
MPC is greatest because that's the /a/ opinion
>>
mpv has no ui besides a seekbar with some information, meaning you need to read documentation spoken literally to do anything with it by editing its files. It's a pain, and is stressful for consumers who only want to play some anime and porn webms. By principle I wouldnt advocate the use of a program that so deeply inhales its own farts, but on my HDD it opens videos faster and seems to stutter less with them on my modest hardware. It gets a grumbling ok from me, but it is not user friendly.
>>
>>1564836
mpc-hc is out of development now

mpv is good because it's just ffmpeg without adding bullshit on top
>>
>>1564896
For what it's worth I just searched "mpc" on /g/'s catalog and found this:

>>>/g/62322945
>''hurr durr MPC-HC is dead''

The above is the subject field of the thread. Three things updated, it says.
>>
Yes.

MPC-HC is based off DirectShow, a proprietary API from Microsoft that is literally deprecated. It uses a hack based off ffmpeg called LAVfilters to work with this deprecated proprietary Windows-only API. Everything about it and it's 100 plug-ins are based around this deprecated API.

mpv offers much higher quality than MPC-HC without madVR, and it does the same thing or better as madVR except using less resources and it's not proprietary software.

Cross-platform, fully open-source, requires no proprietary dependencies, builds into 1 binary instead of needing 100 different plug-ins like MPC-HC.

MPC-HC configuration is a nightmare, how do people complain about mpv configuration when setting up MPC-HC and the 100 plug-ins it requires is such a mess? The configuration can also not easily be backed up, copied to another system, or retained during upgrades of MPC-HC or any of it's 100 plug-ins.

>>1564872
Consumers who only want to play some anime and porn webms would not have to do any configuration to mpv at all.

>by editing its files. It's a pain

The way mpv is configured and ran is actually incredibly standard and common on Linux/Unix.

Tons of programs are configured by adding options to a plaintext config file, or by passing options on the command line.

In the case of many programs, many people prefer this method of configuration as opposed to graphical configuration.

They would have no more trouble finding the option in the manpage and putting them in a plaintext file, a simple task for anyone who isn't retarded, than they would finding the option in a graphical interface, which would undoubtedly be more difficult because mpv has 100s of options.

A plaintext file configuration is easily read by humans (as opposed to a graphical config interface writing options in XML), and it is easily copied to other machines, or backed up.
>>
Also mpv has even more options and possibilities than MPC-HC.

It has support for lua scripts to do very advanced/specific things.

I use mpv as my image viewer for example, you would never be able to turn MPC-HC into a proper image viewer.

This spacing.

What the fuck is up with this formatting dude... But anyway, I wanted to make it loop by default and after weeks couldn't figure it out after ctrl + Fing "loop" at some documentation a few times, so I asked /g/ yesterday. Someone told me to make two files in my mpv cache, and to edit those. I don't see how this is convenient for anyone. I also disabled "/" as a volume down key since it wasn't next to a volume up key and I kept accidentally pressing it when frame advancing with "." which was annoying me. It just has no UI so is not user friendly, I don't know how you can debate this. I'm about to eat though so admittedly I haven't read the entirety of your post...
>>
>>1565008
whenever I try this the image closes after a couple of seconds, do you know how to fix it?
>>
>>1565013
strangely if I open the application then drop the image in there it works fine, but if I try to open an image by right clicking then using "open with" the image closes after a second or so. huh

>I wanted to make it loop by default

loop-file=inf

>after weeks couldn't figure it out after ctrl + Fing "loop" at some documentation a few times

I ran "man mpv" in my terminal

Hit "/"

Typed "loop" and hit enter

Then hit "n" a few times, and in within seconds found documentation on how to loop files or playlists.

Pic related, what caused you to not be able to quickly find this information, and then put it in your config file?

>It just has no UI so is not user friendly,

It does have a UI, I've never thought of mpv as not user friendly.

>I don't know how you can debate this

I've used Linux as my only OS for many years, I've used many programs that are ran and configured exactly like mpv is, it is incredibly standard.

mpv has been a joy for me to use, a large improvement from when only mplayer2 was available. The only complaint I have for mpv is that they don't support DVD menus, and the main developer hates DVDs to an extreme extent, to the point that he removed the code that had DVD menus working at a very reasonable level. At one point he completely removed DVD support entirely.

Well yeah that's the default. mpv requires a lot of specific configuration to be a usable image viewer.

I open image files (and webms) from my file manager with mpv --profile=image

That profile looks like this:

autofit-larger=80%x80%
force-window=yes
hr-seek=yes
image-display-duration=inf
input-conf=~/.config/mpv/input-image.conf
loop-playlist=inf
loop-file=inf
mute=yes
no-keepaspect-window
reset-on-next-file=mute,video-pan-x,video-pan-y,video-zoom
script=~/.config/mpv/autoload.lua

I also have a different set of keybinds to make it work as an image viewer, this is my input-image.conf:

1 repeatable playlist-prev
2 repeatable playlist-next
3 set mute no
` cycle video-unscaled
ENTER cycle pause
ESC quit
DOWN seek -2
UP seek 2
LEFT repeatable playlist-prev
RIGHT repeatable playlist-next
MOUSE_BTN3 add video-zoom 0.1
MOUSE_BTN4 add video-zoom -0.1
SPACE repeatable playlist-next
TAB set video-zoom 0 ; set video-pan-x 0 ; set video-pan-y 0
a repeatable add video-pan-x 0.05
d repeatable add video-pan-x -0.05
s repeatable add video-pan-y -0.05
w repeatable add video-pan-y 0.05
q seek -1
e seek 1

https://github.com/mpv-player/mpv/blob/master/TOOLS/lua/autoload.lua

The autoload.lua script can be found here, you will have to add image format extensions like

'png', 'jpg', 'jpeg', 'gif',

I'll dick about with it later. thanks for the help
>>
>>1564872
I've been using mpv for years and I've never done any configuring apart from editing the screenshot location. The only commands I use are fullscreen, screenshot, change audio/subtitle track, and seek.

Well let me walk you through what I went through trying to find out how to loop mpv by default on startup.

So I go to the mpv general on /g/, the current of which is >>>/g/62333192

I go to the installation page and download the top Windows download link, and the latest one in the subcategory clicking the first sends me to. I receive mpv without having to install, and I return to the mpv general on /g/ to find out how to loop mpv by default. I notice the thread pasta contains:

>High quality video output profile (goes into mpv.conf):
>profile=opengl-hq

I ctrl + F "mpv.conf" in my download folder. No results. I go ot the documentation (actually titled "Manual") in the thread pasta. Ctrl + F "loop". Find some shortcuts to loop in-program once launched, find some commands to loop an arbitrary amount, or indefinitely. Scroll up to read titles of relevant subcategories to gain context of what to do with these commands. Start really stressing out here at having to read so much just to get looping, but get through the first few paragraphs. Try again at searching "mpv.conf" in my download folder, find nothing, give up.

So I see now that after searching "mpv.conf" in the above documentation it tells me to create the file and where to put it to use the commands written, but the first few paragraphs don't touch on this at all, you have to scroll to "CONFIGURATION FILES", "Location and Syntax" to see this. So I just read the first few paragraphs, saw I started scrolling through shortcuts (which admittedly aren't the commands I need) and I gave up. It's a failure in being accessible, and in minimizing the amount of hoops a user has to jump through to learn how to utilize the program in a way without compromise...

How do you change the default screenshot location?

>Try again at searching "mpv.conf" in my download folder, find nothing, give up.

lol

Your problems are because you use Windows, which makes very simple computer tasks like finding a directory, creating a text file, editing a text file, or ruinning programs from a command line difficult, and you're incompetent at using a computer because you use Windows.

Figuring out where to put a config file, creating it, and putting an option in this file, is something anyone who has used Linux would consider very basic.

mpv is very standardized, many programs on Linux are configured in exactly the same way on Linux. Chances are if you've used Linux, you've already encountered programs that are configured exactly the same way, and you don't find it confusing.

Because you've only used Windows, and you're trying to use a Linux program that was hacked to work for Windows, you're very confused.

screenshot-directory=/path/to/directory

You can find other screenshot options in the manpage

Try running "man mpv" in your terminal.

Cool, thanks, it worked.

Sorry, Windows newfag here.

Config files on windows go into appdata or your users folder. Come on now.
>>
Porting mpv to windows was a mistake.
>>
I was suggested media player classic a long time ago. It works. There were issues around 2012 where many things seemed glitched or low quality... googled to learn I should update the codec pack so that it could read 10bit video. No problems since.
