That's the best way to prevent spills, but no the best way to clean them.

If they're fresh you can blot the spot with some clean piece of cloth and then pour table salt on the stain. Add a bit of cold water and then wait until the wine gets absorbed by the salt crystals.

I had a dream that there was some crazy lady that lived in a mansion and she kidnapped orphans and tortured them and killed them and I'm pretty sure she had maids that cleaned up after her, maybe this is one of them.

Anyway, have you tried oxyclean?
