I have a dynamic IP, which resets every night because I don't leave the router on when I am not using it.
I got this ban message today?
What was the cause of this ban?
I am not using a VPN, my internet is just a normal one.

Dumb phoneposter.

Whoever used that IP must have hooked it up to a VPN directory. Simple as that. It's when idiots try to appeal for VPN bans and get mods looking at the IP that they perma-ban the address.

What's a VPN directory?

A VPN is a proxy service. When you volunteer your IP, it can be used by other users as a proxy IP, hence the name. A common use for proxies on 4chan is either a disposable shitposting address that can be used to say things that would risk getting the speaker banned, or bypass a board's thread limit to spam it (Asukaposter is a prime example of this) hence why 4chan has a system to automatically detect and ban them. Nevertheless, there is a gap in the system between the time a ban expires and a new ban is applied, and that time can be used by patient shitposters to go on sprees and destabilize a slower board for hours.

Nice to see we have a member of 4chan staff answering menial IT questions on /qa/.

Serious question, why do you bother asking what a VPN is when it can take you 2-4 seconds to search up a succinct answer?
>>1535682
I know what a VPN is
>>1535699
Well of course now you do; he just explained it to you!
In the future please use the information super-highway more efficiently. Getting spoonfed only leads to laziness and anti-intellectualism.

I didn't ask what a VPN was
