As much as some people may want sage not to be a downvote, the fact that threads need constant bumping to stay alive in 4chan's flawed system means that the deliberate refusal of a bump will be interpreted as dissatisfaction with the thread, most often correctly. Infinite lectures on the "correct" way to use sage will not matter since everyone will continue to use it for what it does.
>>
If you wanted it to be more visible to newfags, the correct way of doing that would be to make it a user-friendly checkbox instead of a code to put in the options (formerly even more confusingly, email) field.
>>
If hiro makes this a pass only feature I would gladly buy one. But alas.

There's actually a pretty strong correlation between the kind of mentality that thinks sage is a downvote and the kind of mentalities that think "winning" internet battles is the most important thing.

In fact, I might even argue that they're almost identical mentalities.
These people will never understand the benefits of sage overall because they cannot step out of their own ego for a few seconds to realize that "winning" or not, if 2 people are arguing and "le downvoting" each other like idiots well guess what? We're ALL the winners in that situation because their shit gets bumped to the top less.

When you look at it from a neutral point of view without caring which arguments are winning or who's getting their little internet feelings hurt the most because of a blue name, what you see in the end is your homeboard has less pointless bickering and even deliberate bait taking being bumped to the front page.

There is literally no argument whatsoever that isn't "waaaa but he use a blue name on me!"-tier that supports the idea of sage being a downvote.
and guess what, those are the people moot listened to. We gave those people their way, and now look at the this place. Is it any coincidence that newer generations of 4chan users actually think 4chan is all about epic """debates""" and tribal warfare? They could not have a more upside down understanding of what 4chan always was before recently. And sage being hidden in my opinion was the catalyst for that change.

In theory downvotes on Reddit are supposed to be used like you want sage used.

>like you want sage used
That post didn't even come close to describing how I want it used (or indeed how it should be used)

The whole issue of sage is so wrapped up in the negatives that whether you're for or against it everyone tends to butt heads over the negative aspects of sage.

But it's much more than that.
Take a really simple post such as "Thanks" in a thread on page 8 for example. Does that post need to bump the whole thread? Not at all, especially with the watcher system we have these days chances are even if the thread dies the person you thanked will see it.
Is that "Thanks" a downvote anon? Is that how downvotes work on reddit?

If you want to truly build a definition of what something is you absolutely MUST consider all cases. Not just a subset of cases that support your version of it.
In the most general terms you would have a very hard time prescribing a single "vote" value to sage.

The best way to cover all use cases of sage is simply to define it as nothing more than deciding your own post isn't worth alerting the entire board to.
Arguments, fighting, baiting, and generally people being dicks to each other is much more easily absorbed into this definition than it is to absorb the positive use cases of sage into your downvote definition.
You sage when you insult someone because the entire fucking board doesn't need to see your stupid insult. It's that simple.

The reason this view never dominated isn't because intelligent anons sat around and thought about what sage really was. It's because the vast majority of posts which don't deserve to bump are inflammatory ones. So even if 100% of the population used sage correctly and neutrally without any intent to insult, it would still be attached to the most annoying, angry, and insulting posts.

Does that mean sage itself is annoying, angry, and insulting? Anyone who really thinks it does needs to take a basic course in logic.
