Yes, when I was a kid and thought it was just a joke that anyone still got genuinely upset at derogatory words.
I still actually think it's not possible to be genuinely hurt by it.
My theory is they don't get over it because they don't want to get over it. They like having a special word that only they can say and that being offended by it is almost completely an act and nothing more.
