What is an "ironic weeb"?

Anime newfag but unlike the old Narutard type, identifies with the "culture" more than they even like anime. Posts in nothing but reaction images and only shows interest in shows that cater to memelords. The anime equivalent of a scenester.

At this point I see "irony" as just being a meta level. I don't care too much for the definition anymore.

I assume it means where a genuine weeb allows themselves to like things without meta, an ironic weeb requires nostalgia/ elitist approval to public display they like it.

Genuine is being like, Cardcapter Sakura? I watch it as a kid, it's cute. Ironic weeb is New Game! steam avatar with a bio that says "don't hit on me you silly boys~"

It's possible to express public affection toward an anime, but superficially if it's calculated to only be socially acceptable it could be ironic. It's how I see it anyway.

A thought; is it the result of things like twitter/steam/etc. being overrun by avatarfags? I say those because on 4chan surely you can't know if someone is an ironic weeb or not unless they have some sort of identity gained from tripfagging/avatarfagging. To me it sounds kinda like it's a self defense method that's lashing out at the anime faggotry elsewhere to make them realise that if they come here they aren't in good company.

They key part here is "want to identify", which is all they care about. They want to fit in, they want people to know just how 'with it' they are, but above all else they don't want to be ridiculed. Irony/meta/whatever is basically a protective blanket from criticism.
People make fun of genuine anime fans all the time. They call them out for being an avatar faggot or having shit taste, but what can you say to an ironic weeb that can't be countered with "it's ironic, you just don't get it :^)"? Nothing. All of the on-lookers who might find it annoying just don't get it. You can't say anything negative to them without getting an automated response and you end up looking like the idiot for even wasting your time, they love that.
