It's for leakers, celebrities and otherwise cancerous tripshitters to identify themselves with.

It helps new posters know that they don't need to enter their real name. Just like the options field keeps them from entering their email unnecessarily. 4chan is all about UX!

Even without the name-field people will always find ways to create an in-group.
A devoted few will spend hours trying to cultivate a subculture within a board and inevitably, even if no name, the select few will easily be spotted for their charisma and outspokenness about certain issues.
