It's a useful term that is accurate. Saying you're an otaku just means you're an obsessive hobbyist without saying what it is. Just saying you like anime leaves out visual novels. Just saying you like visual novels leaves out doujin and so forth. So really you have to say "I'm a modern Japanese medias otaku". For those of us who love Japan in general beyond those medias, as in the language, architecture, clothing etc, the sentence turns into "I'm a Japanese otaku in general, with emphasis I on modern Japanese medias". It's easier to just say "I'm a weeb" so there is that. I don't care that it is pejorative because I don't care about what other people think, I leave that kind of thing to normalfags.
