Last three years have probably been the biggest decline in the quality of this website since 2007. Here's basically why:

2014: GG hit, gaining a bunch of media attention and expanding the scope of internet activism on this website to include almost all media.

2014-2015: /r9k/ popularized a bunch of smug Pepe memes, such as POO POO PEE PEE, tendies, REEEEEEEE, Good Boy Points, and other cancer. This content was popular on reddit and even Facebook, attracting a hoard of obnoxious frogposters. /r9k/ quickly became irredeemable and the new morons spread throughout the website. Notably, this process killed /lit/.

2016: American presidential election and the rise of the alt right as a popular term. /pol/ explodes in size, and comprises a huge percentage of the conversation on this website (/b/ is roughly as fast, but it's mostly image dumps). 4chan becomes a hive of racism in popular opinion. Newcomers are mostly loud, stupid, and hyperpolitical.

There's not much worth saving now.
>>
>>1416309
We all already know all that.
>>

>There's not much worth saving now.
I'm glad you've finally come around.
>>
>>1416310
Good. If I tell you again you won't forget.
>>
ok, well... i think you are too distracted with the cause of increased population and not the coincidental consequences of increased population

in my simple-minded eyes:

2009: umad (ironic)
2011: >2011 (ironic)
2013: "euphoria/ bait"

I wasn't browsing consistently enough beyond then to associate phrases with years, but the euphoria thing was the first time I witnessed it being socially acceptable to drop cookie cutter phrasing/ imagery when upset. Then I stated seeing "what did he mean by this", "go back there", and generally lowered discourse.

I stand by the opinion that the most socially unacceptable thing you can do on this site today is propose logic. If you just dribble passive aggression when you disagree with someone your presence will not be remarkable here. If you propose logic you are a heretic and will receive no respect, only cookie cutter replies.
>>
you forgot fappening
>>

I would also agree that it's nearly impossible for fast boards to be very high quality, but these things feed into each other. Faster > more low effort garbage > better people leave, worse people stay > shorter, lower effort posts in greater volume > garbage. Only one or two boards have made it to the bottom of that cyclone, but almost everything has gone a bit further down.

>>1416339
I could never tell the difference, but I haven't browsed /b/ in years.
>>
>>1416380
>I could never tell the difference
The Fappening made a lot of new people think 4chan was a porn website, so the popular boards had more a lot more porn posted and requested on them.
>>
>>1416324
>2013: "euphoria/ bait"
When you mean euphoria you mean those fedora images?
>>
If you unironically think the reason 4chan is dead is because some 13 year olds post pepes on facebook, you're probably dumb

>>1416309

this they also basically don't respect the global rule of keeping /pol/ in /pol/
>>
Nobody cares. You can fuck off if you don't like 4chan. It has always been about diversity and progress. Not retrograde conservatism.
>>
>2014: GG hit

Fuck right off. Know what happened at right around the same time? The fappening. You're actually going to sit there and claim that us shitting on gaming journalism brought in higher traffic than a massive cache of leaked and socially engineered celebrity nudes? You're a moron.

Yeah, GG actually decreased traffic at the time because of people leaving for 8gag.
>>
>>1417018
Why is 4chan dead, then?

Memes, run of the mill assholes on smartphones, and kids destroyed this place.
>>
>>1417018
Who said that?
>>
>>1417094
GG definitely increased the scope of political conversation to media in a more acute sense.
>>
>>1418153
GG did nothing
I mean nothing, it didn't even make journalists more subtle in their biases, if anything it made them less subtle
It's probably the best example of doubling down in recent history
>>
>>1417094
Few people are willing to admit that porn ruins literally everything it touches.
>>
>>1418170
Who is unwilling to say this? It's obvious. Literally every NSFW board slowly becomes porn and only porn.
>>
>>1418784
Porn (and sex in general) is easily accessible/understandable, so it makes them feel like they're a part of something even if they don't genuinely care about or understand something. People who don't really understand or respect things don't want to admit it because they loose their faux sense of belonging. Pornposters are always the worst cancer of anything.

stop exaggerating the problem about porn
i checked the catalog of /b/ and porn wasn't even in the majority of the catalog
>>
>>1416309
The robots started the frog thing? Interesting. Then how did it get tied into the whole elder god thing?
>>
>>1418954
>i checked the catalog of /b/ and porn wasn't even in the majority of the catalog
Does something need to fill half the catalog before it's cancerous?
>>
>>1418954
You're retarded, mate.
>>
>>1419147
Never post again.

Pepe was a character from Boy's Club who became a meme about ten years ago, because he said "Feels good man" and it was adopted as a reaction image.

A "Feels bad man" edit was made, which led Pepe to be associated with feelfaggotry and blogposting. Pepe and Wojak both became pretty much unacceptable on nearly every board other than /r9k/, and were considered sheer cancer.

/r9k/ acted as their sanctuary until somebody there made the smug Pepe edit, which led to dumb meming about being a NEET who REEEEEEs at normies and shits on the floor of his bedroom. This generated a bunch of memes which became a social media phenomenon, drawing tons of outside attention and destroying any semblance of /r9k/ board culture in the influx. Many of the people complaining about frogposting have done so for over five years.

God thing came about because kek was used as a variant of lol, and kek is also the name of an Egyptian god who was an anthropomorphic frog. As far as I know it's from /pol/.
>>
>>1419147
>Then how did it get tied into the whole elder god thing?
That was /pol/s doing. I first saw the kek thing in one of the earliest Trump generals. One guy kept spamming it until it caught on.
>>
>>1417094
>us
Disgusting. GG was a culture shift that poisoned the boards with social activism like chanology. Its natural extension was the election garbage that came a year after it. People like you that genuinely say things like "us" as if you are a member some army are exactly what OP is talking about. You kids were supposed to stay on 8gag.
>>
>>1419155
Good summary, although I don't recall seeing even boys club toad until late 2008, and I was a daily browser then.

Also of note is that Wojak is a Krautchan meme invented by a Polish shitposter, and is the only real example of a non-Japanese foreign board's meme reaching critical mass on 4chan. Most people that use it are not aware of this history though.
