It isn't just /vg/. Generals have names on /g/, /pol/, /sp/, and /tv/ too.
>>1407405
It makes it easier to filter them.
Because they're from Reddit, where they would normally just make a subreddit for anything they wanted, but because you can't do that here they just try and make a board on a board. Not sure why they don't go to an imageboard that allows user created boards though.

Cuz it's le epic xDDD when i came here from reddit i was like "omg it's like SUBSUBREDDITS AHAHAHAHAHAH" generals rule
>>1407405
Its because it makes it easier for people to find their subreddit on there since its such a big, fast moving board. They can actually go and type in the url boards.4chan.org/vg/fag and the catalog would simgle that general out for them for example.

because it's easier to find/filter them

It's become culture, nothing bad in my opinion.
If you all knew reddit you would know that they don't shorten their subreddit names in 4chan-URI style

Also they could also make a filter for a specific board, check the add button and each time the the thread watcher is manually refreshed, threads that match that filter are added. That way people don't even need to browse the board to browse their generals.

Because it makes it easy to find a thread with the search.
It also adds some personality to the threads in the same way that the overall board name does.
Being that /vg/ threads are, in a way, meant to be like their own board; people like to name them accordingly.
You could probably write a paper on board culture itself, but that would make you a massive faggot.
uhhhhh
