Another side story in the Gundam series, Gundam X is the story of those survivors of the Seventh Space War trying to live among the ruins of their civilization

"Vultures", scavengers of war material and ruined cities roam the wasted Earth

Unknown to all, the leaders of the warring factions have been plotting to regain their lost glory, and using enhanced human "Newtypes", they aim to dominate the world

But Jamil Neate, would-be hero of the war and once-pilot of the monstrous Gundam X, the plucky teen Garrod Ran, and Newtype girl Tifa Adil aim to find a way to save the human race from another round of self-destruction

The very first Gundam series I saw was 08th MS Team

"Gee," I thought, "This Gundam thing is really cool! I can't wait until the next tape!" So I popped in my fansub of Gundam X

Well, it turns out, folks, that, much like Raph found out about Lupin III, Gundam is *also* a series of highly variable quality

Whereas the main storyline seems to be fairly solid, the side stories are another matter entirely

Gundam X is an example of when alternate universes just should NOT exist

Or, "Hey, look, it's Gundam doing an impression of Evangelion!"

Not everything is *completely* bad about this series

It is clever when the main character Garrod holds up a mobile suit with nothing but a pistol (!), but that's about as exciting as it gets

From here on in, we get angst from him, angst from the other main characters, angst from the Newtype girl, heck, angst from everybody! Everyone just wants to complain, and it's downright boring after a while

Yeah, yeah, it's a tragedy you're fighting, but why should we care when you have the power to change landforms with your mecha and you don't know how to control it? We might have even wondered about the character's motivations, had we even gotten a chance to see what their personalities were

But, frankly, all we get are stale rehashes, laughable cliches, or worse, not even background story

Either they've been living in missile siloes, laboratories, or backwater towns all their life, and it shows

These people are BO-RING

Apart from the opening song, the music wasn't particularly memorable

Character designs, though not Wing style, are still modernized for the mid-90s look, and they're about as non-obtrusive (Read: uninteresting) as you can get

It doesn't help that the animation wasn't even that great

Considering that this is a Gundam series, you'd think even that would've been at least respectable, but all we get are the same-old, same-old "let's-blow-up-a-lot-of-featureless-wilderness" scenes

Was it thermonuclear or Dragon Slave? We just don't know, it's so bland

Actually, bland is the perfect word to describe this series

The Gundams are well, they've been done before

The characters are ciphers at best, and morons at worst, with your typical brash, rebellious Gundam pilot (heck, I didn't even remember his name until I checked the Gundam Project website!) and his Newtype sweetheart Tifa (or Tiffa, if you prefer) clashing with "terrorists"

who might as well have been the cast from The Venus Wars for all I know (well, you see, there's this big ship in the sand, and they send out mecha for the gang rumbles

versus the miscellaneous government/institution/military leadership

The plot seems like a drab retelling of a post-apocalyptic Gundam Wing as told by the recently lobotomized

As the only emotions really expressed are rage, desperation, and, oh yeah, angst, Gundam X strikes me as being just as anti-Gundam as Gundam Wing was, but in a different way

The Gundam mainline focuses on honor and deception, love and war, betrayal and perseverance, and above all, the hope for a new future

Gundam X focuses on nothing but despair

and as such, fails utterly to keep this reviewer's interest

Whereas Gundam, though at times saddening, was exciting, suspenseful, and full of life, Gundam X is completely bleak and inhuman, and loses the point that Gundam is actually less about the mecha than about humanity itself

Then again, when neither the mecha or the humans inspire anything why should we care?

Well, I've only got myself to blame, I suppose, since I at least partly knew what I was getting myself into

The worst part is that the very framework this OAV series is built on is actually pretty good

It borrows a LITTLE bit from Waterworld, what with the ocean levels having risen significantly, now covering ever so much more of this world (though not to the extent as in the aforementioned movie)

Take that, throw in some action scenes, the creepiest set of villains I have ever seen, and heaps upon heaps of panty-clad ass, and you have Agent Aika

It SHOULD probably have been a guilty pleasure, but becomes more of an overdose

EVERY action scene seems to end up with unconscious females lying with their butts poking up into the air

And, of course, the future has miniskirts being the only female-approved attire

This OAV series has more panties than I've ever seen in any anime before, and I've seen only half of it

The art and animation is actually pretty decent, if nothing else

The VAs do a good job too, though the music was pretty much forgettable

Or perhaps I was just distracted

I dunno

How the dub is, I'm afraid I'll never find out

Of the four episodes I watched, the plot actually had a concrete ending, meaning that this OAV actually has two story arcs

The plot of the one I've seen was decent enough, even though it featured your creepy evil brother-and-sister team that is a little bit closer than most

Apparently, their plan was to acquire Aika's "super-battle bustier" (excuse me while I wince again) to

er, grow more powerful I suppose

And what a bustier that is

When she activates it, something that looks far too much like a gropefest starts, and Aika's physical appearance completely changes

For what reasons, I have no idea

And what does it do? I dunno

Ups her combat skills? Makes her look more naked? Becomes a harbinger of more panties to come? All of the above?

The Kisugi sisters (Rui, Hitomi, and Ai) will tell you that the fact that the name of their café, Cat's Eye, is the same as the name used by a female band of art thieves is just a coincidence.

The Kisugi sisters are rather bald-faced liars, but one has to give them credit for the carelessness and phenomenally bad judgment that would instantly direct any sentient being, much less a savvy cop, to exactly where the blame belongs.

Fortunately for the sisters Toshio Utsumi, the detective in charge of defeating Cat's Eye (the art thieves) is not only NOT savvy, he seems only semi-sentient most of the time.

He's proud of the arrangements he's made to safeguard the treasures he's assigned to protect, and happy to tell the sisters running Cat's Eye (the café) all about them.

And those ladies are so interested they want to ask him even more! They'll even straighten his tie for him (and include a bugging device on it for no extra charge!) They DO play the guy for a fool- though the middle sister, Hitomi, begins to develop some actual feelings toward him- and while they (almost) always get their targets, they sometimes throw the worse felons they encounter into Toshio's lap, so he won't get replaced too fast.

After all, they NEED a man like him.

My first acquaintance with this show (I THINK) is from the sendup of it in Girls Bravo.

Now, being parodied by the likes of Girls Bravo is kind of a disgrace that this show really doesn't deserve- not quite- for despite Cat's Eye's many inanities and plot flaws, which will be described in lurid detail here, the show nevertheless has its charms, and on balance they make the show far superior to the likes of Girls Bravo, in any case.

So I'll rant about those inanities a bit.

The synopsis has already mentioned the outrageously poor judgment the ladies exhibit in naming their art-theft operation after their café (or is it the other way around?).

Let's just say that resonated with me here.

And there's the thing with the cards.

Cat's Eye always announces their next target in advance using cards, apparently so Toshio can blab/brag to them about the exact arrangements being made to protect the target from this announced threat.

The cards must be laminated like crazy- they stick in walls, and the ladies use them like ninja stars in combat.

I thought they must be metal, but they DO burn.

And yet for some reason, nobody thinks to check the cards for fingerprints, even though we see the sisters handling them with bare hands.

Imagine, if you will, a tightly knit narrative about government agents who find themselves uncovering a great conspiracy, only to be manipulated into facing a rival government agency by some bigger fish

Call it "cyborgs versus psychics", a battle royale to determine which of their bosses gets to be in charge of Japan's shadow government

Maybe throw in some waterboarding scenes, toss in some smoothly choreographed action scenes here and there, but keep the atmosphere tense and exciting and suspenseful and gritty

Sounds great, right?

And that's what Angel Cop could have been, had it not been for its creators deciding early on in this project (I'm guessing the first five seconds after inception, really) that their audience was clearly going to care more about gore, blood, shredded steel, and explosions than about any actual meaningful social commentary

With director Ichiro Itano (responsible for the "darker, edgier" Megazone 23 Episode II, the second episode of Violence Jack, and later to helm the infamously visceral TV series Gantz) and writer Noboru (aka Shou) Aikawa (responsible for the reprehensible scripts of Dog Soldier, Genocyber, Violence Jack, and Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend, though, paradoxically, also the scenarist for Vampire Princess Miyu, Neo Ranga, and Twelve Kingdoms), it's evident that they wanted to be as violent and edgy as possible, plot be damned

And, unfortunately, this comes at the expense of characterization, as it's evident after about five minutes that even the protagonists are trigger-happy psychopaths

Even the most "innocent" character in this show is depicted incinerating multiple people, so really, we're kinda sorta left rooting for Angel by default simply 'cause she's got a nice pair of headlights

On her motorcycle

Or something

The animation quality is middling for the late '80s/early '90s, which means that by modern standards it looks stunningly archaic especially in most non-action scenes and relies on a lot of explosion effects and speed lines to disguise quality defects

It doesn't help that literally everything looks very dark -- even the daytime scenes look somewhat muted

Still, there are a few combat scenes that are pretty awesome for their time, such as the fight on the bridge in episode four and several scenes of the very protracted final battle which actually takes up nearly the entirety of the final two episodes

The art design is borderline hilarious (the decision in particular to dress the Hunters up as glam rockers complete with big hair is particularly risible), and we're never quite sure if Lucifer is a butch woman or a transvestite with breast implants, thanks to a complete lack of consistency in her (his?) character design

Also, since this is 1989 Japan, just about everyone is apparently a biker, leading to the most ridiculous game of chicken I've ever seen animated

And while there are a couple of missile launches to remind us that director Itano is the namesake of the Macross "Itano Circus" trope, the focus here seems to shift rapidly to how quickly this anime can become a thorough splatterfest, an emphasis that quickly becomes outright noisome (right from the beginning, where we get to see Angel graphically blow the brains out of a female terrorist)

By the way, guys? Health Hint for the Anime Creator: Don't flash a girl's boobs at me while you're killing her onscreen

Party foul to the Nth degree! Also misogynistic and repellent, but hey, that's just another day hard at work for these guys, right?

As with many action OAVs of this era, the music is uniformly terrible

Just when you think this anime might get down a suspenseful moment, the music director decides to jam a synthesized minor chord in our faces, at times to the point of laughability

The oddly choppy ending song, a rock ballad called "Itami" (meaning "pain") by Crayon Company is essentially only appropriate due to its name, as it's sung ever so slightly off-key

It's telling that the most effective (or at least relieving?) moments are the ones where there isn't any background music at all

As unsympathetic as all the characters were, I can't really blame the all-star seiyuu cast for it

Mika Doi (Macross's Misa Hayase) really embraces her badass side as the hard-bitten Angel, opposite Masashi Ebara (Hohenheim Elric from Full Metal Alchemist) as Raiden, a cop so beyond the law, he doesn't even need a shirt under his motorcycle jacket

We've even got Akira's Tetsuo (Nozomu Sasaki) as big-haired glam-rocker psychic Asura, ironically, playing one of the few characters you don't see riding a motorcycle

(Not even an anti-tank one! And yes, this show has anti-tank motorcycles

Just go with it, okay?) The voice actor with the least experience, Kumiko Hironaka, chews tons of scenery as the androgynous and transparently bat-nuts-crazy Lucifer, and honestly, it's kind of a shame she hasn't done much else, if anything, at least to have some better titles on her resume

(She also gets to yell racial epithets in almost-but-not-quite-English, which would be utterly hysterical if it weren't so offensive in context)

"DON'T TATCHI ME!" Okay, crazy lady

For the purpose of this review, I reviewed the subtitled version, which is nevertheless extremely bowdlerized from the actual Japanese audio

The funny thing is that the subtitles refer to the ultimate manipulators of world power as "American corporations" but those of us who are actually listening to the Japanese dialogue hear the word "yudaya" thrown about incessantly by both good guys and bad alike

This utterly offensive insinuation, of course, is completely removed in the English dub, along with, unfortunately, any semblance of serious acting talent whatsoever -- prepare to hear extremely wooden, fake "American" accents that involve putting "-er" endings to words no actual American would think of appending that sound to, a complete and utter failure to pronounce any Japanese names correctly, and, best of all, horribly (awesomely) corny lines that somehow manage to make the entire cast look even more like psychopaths than before

BUT YOU ARE GUILTY AND MUST DIE!

The most memorable dub line, though, which I won't spoil, is, unbeknownst to a majority of Americans watching this show, a shoutout to satirist Ian Hislop, which firmly cements the idea that writers behind this intentionally lowbrow dub are, ironically, smarter than the original scenarists

And finally, after most of the cast has been slaughtered bloodily, and just as Angel has finally turned the corner from self-centered, venal, trigger-happy psychopath to slightly less self-centered, venal, trigger-happy psychopath - the show finally comes to a close in an abrupt downer ending that hammers home what sort of crapsack universe these creators have opened up to us

Essentially, you realize that no matter what anyone has tried to do, Japan pretty much goes to crap anyway

I will never understand how people can get this incredibly butthurt about a thread like this.
