I haven't gotten around to configuring Japanese input on my computer yet, but I've gotten pretty good at the iphone's kana swipe keyboard.

Take the J-CAT test. http://j-cat.org/
I sat for N3 last December and passed quite easily. The day before, I took J-CAT and got 224. If you can score 200 or so you should be fine for N3.
Actually studied it growing up and could comprehend it fairly well, but guess what. I cannot read kanji for SHIT. 98% guess work
I just jisho all my kanji in comics and try to get it to stick.
It's time consuming, but I think it works better than anki decks.

Someone school me on how to pronounce the Japanese R. I hear a lot of people talking about the "R mixed with L and D" shit, but sometimes I'm pretty sure I hear it as an alveolar tap. How am I supposed to know which one to pronounce depending on the situation?
>>1257915
When your tongue is already on a neutral position (like before pronouncing 六) you lightly flap your tongue and it kind of sounds like an L. But when you're talking fast the tongue flap is less smooth and it turns into an alveolar flap. It's complicated but if you're learning japanese you'll get it naturally.
>>1257965
I see. Thanks for that. It's easy for me to do the tap/flap, but I can mess up the other sound pretty often if I'm not careful.

Ginko goimasu desune desu deska?
I'm at the point where if I can both listen and read at the same time (like a vn or vn-like video game) then I'm mostly ok as long as it's not something with a super-complex plot. I often find that the one word in a sentence I don't know is a verb, so I don't know what's happening but I know what it's happening to.
I can read SoL manga and watch SoL anime pretty easily. Sometimes I try talking with the Japanese people in the 日本語スレ on /int/.
Unlike >>1265075 I can read ok, but I can't really speak it at all, since I never practice that.

You need a notepad, a pen and a mug of beer to learn Japanese.
Isn't pronunciation fairly easy for English speakers (due to there only being about ~100 sounds all with English analogues) but written form is very difficult?
>>1272024
not really
>>1272024
Yes pronunciation was easy for me (but take that with a grain of salt because I've never spoken to a native). Learning to pronounce Japanese for an English native I imagine would be much easier than the opposite. English has a lot more sounds, it even has more vowel sounds.

It's time I started learning Japanese, I've been into anime for like 13 fucking years and I've tried like twice but couldn't get into it. I recently had the option of choosing a Japanese course at uni but turned it down in favour of a better one, it's time to go to the DJT and git fucking gud.
>>1277188
Good luck, and I would suggesting not spending too much time in DJT. It's decent for a general, but they love arguing about inane shit that goes nowhere. Use the guide and leave the threads for when you need to ask a question and can't find the answer yourself.
>>1277214
Thanks and I'll keep that in mind about DJT, I suppose it's a good way to remember words though, you see it and think back to the stupid shit you saw in DJT and the image and meaning of the word becomes more vivid in your head, assuming you haven't been fed a mistranslation of course.
>>1277323
If only. They argue in English, and about study methods, so you won't learn anything. At most, you'll learn about some random dude's biased and exaggerated opinions on different Japanese learning resources, but no actual Japanese.
That said, of course that's a vocal minority. Most of the thread refrains from engaging them and basically what I want to say is that I would advise you to do the same. Take it easy and know the difference between opinion and fact. がんばってね〜

Visual novels you can use a text hooker to give rough translations.
>>1281706
Same way you learn for everything else. Video games don't use a special dialect or anything.
>>1281710
thanks famalam
>>1281715
I was just wondering it there would be some more reading intensive technique for this special purpose. To be honest, I've been learning Russian for the past years, but sometimes it feels a little bit pointless. I mean, language learning can always become a hobby, but it is great if you can combine it with some kind of objective (games, animu etc).

If you read VNs or VN like games where you can manually advance conversations, it's really easy because you get both listening and kanji, plus you can stop to look things up without pausing.
>>1283141
Not too bad. I'm fairly early on in the Kodansha Kanji Learner's Course. I'm having trouble with: 事、成、以って、and 行く. They just seem like random lines without form for now until I get them recognized on reflex. I'm going to keep trying!

Clench your teeth, put your tongue up and blow air to make your tongue vibrate then let your voice out to make a sound.
That's how you produce R's it sounds like cat purr. Of course in speech you don't usually make such long RRRRRRRRRR's, just two or three R's are enough.
I have tried learning it at least three times seriously since 2011 and at this point only know the kana, about 100 kanji, some words, very basic grammar. However I've gotten better at accomplishing things over that time so if I tried again I would succeed. However I don't have a motivation really, because I don't want to live in Japan and there's barely anything that's not translated that I wish I could read, at least not nearly enough to warrant learning an entire language. I will definitely learn a language sometime in the future though, I'm tired of the west and I want to be immersed in a distant culture.

I think that book covers radicals.
I've tried to in the past. I learnt the kana and a few kanji/words. My lack of motivation made it very easy to get discouraged, so I gave up entirely after a while. Maybe if after a couple months I could read a book meant for children I would have stuck with it, but that wasn't what happened.
Even though I have no interest in next to nothing that comes from Japan, I still want to learn Japanese someday.
