>>
>>61210208
I don't give a shit about metric

What we should do is redesign the imperial with base 10. 10 inches to a foot, inches are divided into 10ths.

Tired of dealing with fractions, tired of dealing with fractions in 4 different denominators, tired of writing fractions that take up so much space on paper, and tired memorizing every multiple of 12. Fuck

Canada is like 80% imperial. We state our height in feet and inches, our weight in pounds, buy drinks in ounces and pints, the only thing is on paper we are officially metric so you see packaging in grams and litres. The only thing I can think of that pretty much all Canadians use metric for is weather and distances.
>>
>>61210208
It's irrelevant now with smart phones. There is no reason to change anymore.

As for why we never changed over to metric one reason is to protect American patents by having them written out in imperials. It's not as much about actually protecting patents in this instance because conversion is so easy but about people in charge that THINK it protects patents.
>>
>>61211874

you know it would be easier to switch to metric.

Standard is better for everyday measurements
Even Fahrenheit is better for regular temperature taking. In the US, the average temperature for the year is generally ~50 degrees.

Tell me this, Europe--if the metric system is so great, then why do you still use:
60 second "minutes"
60 minute "hours"
24 hour "days"
7 day "weeks"
28,30, or 31 day "months"
12-month "years"
365 (or 366!) day "years"

Seems pretty arbitrary and hypocritical to me.

Metric sucks for easily dividing stuff in your head quickly unless it is by 2, 5, 10, etc. Imperial units allow more flexibility in quickly dividing units. A foot is easily divided by 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 into inches. For the the thing we probably divide most in our daily lives, consider there are 60 minutes in an hour. What is 60? It's the smallest number evenly divisible by 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. It is also evenly divisible by 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60. Metric is certainly simpler to learn but it isn't necessarily that useful in regular daily life.

Distance:

one good step is 1 meter
the width of your hand is roughly 10cm ( with thumb)
the nail on your pinky is roughly 1cm

now you can easily measure things if you really need to.

Weight and Volume: people know that a normal glass holds up to 200ml or that a block of butter weights 500g, its stated on the wrap and if you can do basic math, you're good. No need to learn lists of measurements.
If something has the volume of 2l, we say "the volume is 2 liters", not "the volume is 2 tetrapaks" or shit like that.

No, thats retarded. I own a cereal company and decide that from tomorrow i will label its weight in fractions of my body mass. How functional is that? Its retarded. Man, who gives a shit? The people in the U.S. that need to know metric (scientists, etc.) know it. For everyone else, the current system works just fine, to the point where it hasn't been a real political issue in forty years.

I will never understand why some Europeans seem to act so damn offended that Americans buy a gallon of gas, or measure their height in feet and inches.
>>
>>61217333
>if people find it confusing they wont buy your product
Or they will get used to it and we end up with a shit ton of different measurement systems which make it almost impossible to do everyday tasks without ridiculous amounts of conversion calculations. Thats what the world was like before imperial units got standardized. How long a foot was depened on the guy that was measuring, each larger town/guild has their own weights... It was terrible.

>Also why are you still speaking German when English is the de facto world language ?
Because there is actually culture attached to language. And it takes more than a day to learn a different language...

>>61217416

You can't correct for factors that you don't account for.

This is literally why it's absolutely retarded to ship over a calibrated weight set from France to the US to calibrate scales.

The amount of mass may not change, but Earth's gravity isn't the same everywhere on Earth. The calibration weight changes merely by moving to a different spot. This is the definition of arbitrary.
>>
>>61218035
Other way around. Its difficult to learn an other language, and abandoning your mother tongue comes at a very high price. So the motivation and practability are ridiculously low. Learning a new measurement system takes hours, and you loose nothing by abandoning whatever you were using before.
