Typically you'll need a deer tag, which are easy to get. You need a hunters safety card and you just buy one at Walmart or something like that. I dunno how the ammo restrictions work here OP is from, but here you can hunt deer with any centerfire cartridge.

he has a double barrel shotgun and a hunting dog.

Yeah, 39. The xcrs had fte probs when it was a new design ten years ago. Those reputations tend to stick around well past their effective date (se ar15 jamming). I've never had a problem with mine except for when I was dialing in the gas piston adjustment and using wolf and trying to find the least amount I could use and still operate.

Scopes go all the way up to $2000+ and typically the more you pay, the clearer you will see through it. Also the magnification and lens size normally make the price go up.

As for deer meat, it can sometimes be a slight bit gamey but for the most part tastes like really lean beef.

Tikka and Weatherby have always made better rifles than Remington. They are also more expensive and don't have a YUGE amount of aftermarket parts to trick your gun out.

I really like my Dale edition. The tikka, weatherby, and X-bolt are all great guns too. The difference in quality is really not that substantial. New 700's can shoot very accurately out of the box, are strongly rust resistant, and are in general great guns.

I have to drive out 2.5-3 hours to get to a county that I can actually hunt in, and if I go out 4 times a year, I'll be lucky if I get ONE wild pig.

Also, I do stalk turkey since you can't shoot them from a tree or elevated stand, I would actually try stalking deer if I could stalk their tracks through fresh snow but it never snows where I live.
