If I had to own a gun it'd be a 1911. .45 is just a great cartridge for self defence. For home defence, I'd get a shotgun. I'd also get a .22 LR pistol for plinking, basically shits and giggles.

We can own rifles sure, but the ammo can't be centre fire, we are limited to certain calibers, and the gun itself can't be too large nor too small... and we need to jump through a load of permits and legal wrangling to get one. And even after that, we need to pay the licence fee, buy two safes, bolt them to the floor, and store the (unloaded) weapon in one and the ammo in the other. And further still, I have to agree to random checks at any time by the police without notice. AND I need to prove I have a legitimate reason for wanting to own one. And I need several background checks, and people who agree to interviews with the police concerning me to make sure I'm not an odd sort. It's just a mess.

I worked in the uk and had a co- worker that would go in business trips to the US from time to time. First thing he would do on a free day is hit a gun range just to target shoot. Buying you would probably not be able to unless you are a citizen or green card holder and then this also varies from state to state. my particular perspective is that 9mm with a large magazine and a good load is the best, ensuring ideal placement and many chances to do so

.45 is also good, but the issue of viable concealed carry options arises, relative same performance for a much larger and more unweildy load, etc

I would be carrying a large cap. magnum under a coat if it weren't blisteringly hot here. shit, maybe I'd just carry a shotgun. But I can't.

either way, as powerful as .44 is, the first shot is still only maybe 15% more likely to end the fight compared to 9mm. then the speed of the follow up shot, the size of the weapon, etc all complicate it.

I actually own a S&W 9mm and a Rem R1 1911 as well but I dont like either of them. In terms of handguns I pretty much only enjoy the feel of the 1911 and nothing else about them and revolvers.

I mostly have a thing for long range shooting though when it comes to guns over anything else.

I keep a revolver for self defense because I can keep it loaded indefinitely with no maintenance. A loaded magazine for a pistol would overcompress the spring unless it were rotated out every few months, and I know I wouldn't bother.

With a revolver, it's guaranteed to work. A gun fight won't last beyond the 5 shells. Probably won't last beyond 2 shells. One in the heart, and one in the head.

To be honest no I don't. I spent roughly an aggregate 2 months in the UK over the last year on business trips and just the general perception of guns and masculine (and American) culture in general is what I would call irredeemable.

Got a Taurus pt1911 at a gun show last weekend. Blasted 200 rounds, and loved every second of it. In hindsight, a 9mm may have been preferred due ammo purchasing budgetary constraints (inb4 cucked by wife) but 1911 is manliest gun on market.
