Nationalism is a disease of a weak mind trying to compensate for being so by hiding behind a symbol (or a flag, in this case) to thus convince themselves they're in fact strong. Its fucking sad, to be honest.

That said, there's nothing wrong with Patriotism, and there *is* a difference between the two. Let's use an analogy to explain.

Two fans are watching their respective American football teams compete on television. Let's say its the New England Patriots vs. the Tennessee Titans.

The Pats fan is decked out in full Patriots regalia (painted face, replica jersey, the works) and LOVES his team. He's also quite convinced that his team CANNOT be beaten in play without either the other team flat-out cheating or by a long series of bad calls from the "corrupt, money-loving" referees. He will howl and scream obscenities when his team begins to lose.

The Titans fan, is also wearing his team's jersey and is watching the plays closely, nodding when he sees something he likes, shaking his head ruefully when he sees something he doesn't. The Titans fan ultimately wants his team to win, just like the Pats fan, but he's willing to allow that maybe his team is playing off today, or that the coaches were honestly stumped, or that luck wasn't on his side today. Shit DOES happen, but maybe next game (or next year), his team will win and he will be there to support them.

tl;dr? A Nationalist will not be able to admit that there is a problem with their country, because they HAVE TO BE the best. A Patriot will admit that while his country has problems, he will still support them because maybe it can change for the better.

Yes Nationalism and Patriotism are two different things, but you know why they're different? Patriotism is social conditioning designed to support the actions of the state. Nationalism is identifying with your own nation. One is national identity, the other is supporting the state that claims to represent that nation.

Nationalism and Patriotism arent American invented. Nationalism was influenced by the American revolution but it first appeared in England, was ultimately coined by a Prussian and popularized by the French Revolution, while patriotism has been around since the god damn Elizabethan era.
