He made a terrible mistake that is most likely going to cost him Iowa and is going to drop his poll numbers significantly. He went after Cruz for about 5 minutes. It was a split screen where it showed him and Cruz and Cruz was looking very humble and actually a little upset that Trump was going into him like that. Cruz came back and definitely won the debate between the two of them and made Trump look a little foolish. First time I've seen Trump on the defensive.

Had it been any other candidate it would have been just a classic Trump moment but since him and Cruz are essentially going after the same people it will likely not sit well with the anti establishments and Cruz will benefit from the exchange.

To be fair, he's not entirely wrong. Upstate NY is tolerable (hung out with a few people from there), but they get cucked by NYC laws. Chicago vs rural Illinois is pretty much the same.

That's why I'm saying Cruz was insulting NYC and urban city policies on guns, not necessarily the whole state. Even upstaters would probably agree with Cruz. Trump responded specifically about NYC, so at least he took it that way.

You're still stuck on the logic of it all. Part of what makes Trump so imposing is that he does not allow any slight to go unanswered; he attacks directly until his target is destroyed or silenced. Going off-message(for him) on guns while letting Cruz's attack on him stand is essentially deferring to Cruz, letting him steer the conversation while showing weakness and running his city up the flagpole. Trump dictates his own points, he doesn't let others dictate to him. If you attack him or anyone close to him(hometown, remember) he will attack you ruthlessly.

That is what makes him a strong candidate. Going on a Cruz-esque wonky diatribe is not what got him where he is.

You don't get it. Trump completely negated that by bringing up 9/11. It replaced regionalism with a nationalistic message and a very powerful one at that. Instead of shitlibs in Greenwich Village, he had people visualizing the NYPD and FDNY. Trump's delivery was much stronger, and left a much stronger emotional imprint on his audience. Give it a day.
