The US is using them as a fallback position, after their FSA/JAN/AQ strategy got blown up by Russia. At the cost of alienating Turkey, they plan to support them so that they can push on Raqqa, break ISIS and carve out a pseudo-state Kurdistan across eastern Syria and western Iraq, and potentially southern Turkey. This would give them a geopolitical tool they could use to leverage against Russian influence in the region in the future, and maybe even get the gas pipelines through from Qatar into Europe, undercutting Russia's gas monopoly there (what this who game is all about). It wont work because, 1) the Kurds are suspicious of them as they are allies to the Turks, and 2) they aren't interested in taking Raqqa or pushing through the eastern Syrian desert. They are interested in autonomy promised by Syria, and they are open to Russian support because they aren't military allies with Turkey and they have demonstrated that they get shit done. Its a Hail Mary gamble. It wont pay off.
>Anybody has more info on the kweiris situation? >i mean, how do they manage to hold the base after a siege that long? how many men are inside? do they get supplies? etc
300 men (for extra meme-points) who were cadets before the war.
Kweres airbase is one of the 17 airbases that remain active. Kweres has little value as an airbase however and has already been under constant siege since December 2011.
Originally completely surrounded by the FSA, the siege was taken over by fighters of the Islamic State after their rapid expansion in Eastern Syria well over a year ago. IS have stormed the base on a number of occasions whilst utiilizing UAVs to spot targets for the U.S. made 155mm M198 howitzers captured in Iraq, which have now used to shell the base and its surroundings.
Kweres was originally constructed by Poles in the early sixties to serve as the SyAAF's main training base. Most SyAAF pilots once got their wings here, which makes the airbase of high symbolic value. IS is frantically looking for large propaganda stunts to retain the detterence it once boasted.
As Kweres is completely surrounded by ISIL, the only lifeline between the airbase and the rest of regime-controlled Syria is the SyAAF's helicopter fleet, which continuously supplies the airbase with anything ranging from food to weaponry and their munitions. One squadron of Mi-8s was permanently detached to Kweres in part to aid in this task.
The defenders of Kweres almost solely rely on light weapons in the defence of the airbase. This weaponry included SVD 'Dragunov' marksman rifles, Iranian 12.7mm AM.50 anti-materiel sniper rifles, (heavy) machine-guns, RPG-7s, ATGMs and a number of Russian night sights intended for the AKM to enable the defenders to better fight at night. The twenty-six anti-aircraft guns present at the airbase (two from the nearby S-125 SAM site) provide the heavy firepower as no tanks or artillery are stationed at the airbase.
>>53923604 >get the gas pipelines through from Qatar into Europe, undercutting Russia's gas monopoly there (what this who game is all about). Except they don't need Syria for this at all. Look at the map, they can already build a pipeline if they want through Saudi\Gulf-Iraq-Turkey-EU or Saudi-Egypt-Mediterranean-EU or Saudi-Jordan-Israel-Mediterranean-EU
Even if they subjugate Syria, they would still need to cross Iraq and then either Turkey or Mediterranean - the same as they could do now. Pipeline can't be factor here.
Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff lands in Israel.
>The two generals were expected to discuss a number of matters, including both countries' intelligence activities in the wake of the Iran nuclear deal, which the IDF describes as a strategic turning point. The duo will also discuss Russian and U.S. operations in the region, and the planned Iranian offensive in Syria.
Unrelated, UN apparently pissed at Abbas of Palestine for apparently inciting hate. Something about "dirty jew feet".
So, after the WW2, Yugoslavia captured 1/4 of the entire production of Stg44s. They were used by the Yugoslavian People's army up until the '80s, when they have been sent to Libya as military aid. Only facility that produces 7.92 Kurz is the PPU ammo factory in Užice, Serbia. So, all of these weapons are from Libya, and another piece of evidence how the West is moving them from one conflict zone to another.
>We are not supplying weapons to the terrorists! :^)
>>53924317 But they (Qatar) would like to build their pipeline as extension of already existing South Caucasus pipeline (Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey), which is planned and called Nabucco pipeline (what a great jewname...). By this they would take out of game Egypt, who is already agreed with SAR government to extend Arab pipeline from Homs to Turkey, but war stopped this... War also stopped "Islamic" pipeline project - Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline. This could transport huge amount of gas from Iran to Cyprus, Greece and South Europe. It not gonna happen if alliance between Iran, Iraq and Syria breaks. Russia would be definitely happier with Iranian gas reaching Europe, not Qatari, obviously. It would also make Turkey beg for more Russian gas, Blue Stream would suddenly look more likely.
So it's not about how to transport Qatari gas to Europe, indeed they are many ways. It's about stop others to do the same.
I should make explanation map/inforgraphics, it's so obvious and unfortunately only few people usually gets it, they are probably not so sociopathic like world leaders.
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4712443,00.html >Report: Russia blocks Israeli jets over Lebanon >Lebanese newspaper claims Israeli jets turn back after confrontation with Russian aircraft over northern Lebanon.
>In 2012 an analyst cited by Ansa Mediterranean suggested that Qatar's involvement in the Syrian civil war was based in part on its desire to build a pipeline to Turkey through Syria:
>"The discovery in 2009 of a new gas field near Israel, Lebanon, Cyprus, and Syria opened new possibilities to bypass the Saudi Barrier and to secure a new source of income. Pipelines are in place already in Turkey to receive the gas. Only Al-Assad is in the way. Qatar along with the Turks would like to remove Al-Assad and install the Syrian chapter of the Muslim Brotherhood. It is the best organized political movement in the chaotic society and can block Saudi Arabia's efforts to install a more fanatical Wahhabi based regime. Once the Brotherhood is in power, the Emir's broad connections with Brotherhood groups throughout the region should make it easy for him to find a friendly ear and an open hand in Damascus."
>>53924317 Others were faster than me, but the biggest hole in your argument is the economics one. The cost to build the port and refinery infrastructure at the exit port in the middle east and the entry port in Europe, not to mention the tanker fleet needed to transport the gas is astronomical. The cost of the gas would start at 3x directly piped and go up. Direct pipeline is always cheaper. They could not compete with the Russian market if they have to ship it. If the goal is to undermine Russian control on the energy future of Europe, they need to use pipelines to be economically competitive.
The shortest route is through Jordan and Syria. Why else would Jordan willingly become party to this madness? They want that sweet, sweet transit fee money.
>>53923297 claiming kurds as communists is the first mistake you made, they are not communists, they are pretty much islamic fascists behind a communism mask. they are seriously worse then arabs (excluding the beheading jihadist type) in every way pretty much living like cavemen.
Everything US foreign policy stands for now is anti Assad. They are even not going full apeshit on ISIS, and they are killing american prisoners are a threat to culture and civilisation everywhere they are, in hope they dipose Assad for the US.
What more ISIS is indirectly funded by US, because CIA is arming Syrian insurgents 60-80 of which are ISIS supporters.
Basically for US foreign policy and its media, Assad is worse than ISIS.
Russia hasn't been targeting IS and iranians have been backing Assad including with IRGC on the ground for years
So it is far from an 'non negotiable fact' to assert that IS (what is ISIL???) are fucked IS took 20,000 strikes from US for over a year and its still standing strong, so how the hell you guys seriously think that the entrance into the game of russia, who isn't targeting IS, can change the game is simply bizarre
>>53923604 >>53924317 You both niggers dumb as fuck Qatar doesn't transport shit through pipelines, they do it with ships. Would you believe me if i told you that we, fucking poland have a deal for the next 50 years to get transports from Qatar via Swinouiscie gas port? Do you retarded fucks really think that they would pay insane amounts of money to build this pipe and then lose it to a single lone terrorist with a WW2 cannon?
>>53925196 >I should make explanation map/inforgraphics Please do because I'm reading wiki and it doesn't quite match what you said. Nabucco is a pipeline in Europe, not Qatar, was supposed to connect to both South Caucasus pipeline and Iraqi pipeline as well as Tabriz–Ankara pipeline from Iran, but it seems to be closed in favor of Trans Adriatic Pipeline anyway.
>>53925251 Still, I don't see why can't Qatar build it through Iraq only, bypassing Syria entirely. Though I guess blocking Iran-Iraq-Syria pipeline through the war in Syria makes sense.
>>53925535 You can build a subsea pipeline like Russia does.
>>53926099 We,here in russia, have are huge Kurdish diaspora - and i always fell strange then see a half-semitic - half-nordic with blue eyes antropological types of Kurds. But it near 20% of them - other in mix with turks and armemnian - so tipically caucasus-arab looking ppl.
>>53926340 Through the unstable middle east? FUCK NO You have to pay all the retarded govts to build it, then to allow you to use it, then you have to pay mercs to protect it. And the worst, you have to pay the govt again after the dictator changes. And even worse, you upset some Iran or whatever and they will just send one commando to blow the pipe up.
>Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP; Albanian: Gazsjellësi Trans-Adriatik, Azerbaijani: Trans Adriatik Boru Xətti Greek: Αδριατιkός Αγωγός Φυσιkού Αερίου, Italian: Gasdotto Trans-Adriatico) is a pipeline project to transport natural gas from the Caspian sea (Azerbaijan), starting from Greece via Albania and the Adriatic Sea to Italy and further to Western Europe.
>>53926446 he never identified himself as a kurd too, he always fought for "islam". the typical polls and researches in turkey show that kurds identify themselves as "muslim" in the first place and "kurd" as the second place. which explains why erdogan is able to get such huge votes from kurds.
On Wednesday, a U.S. official confirmed to Fox News that Cuban paramilitary and special forces units are on the ground in Syria, citing evidence from intelligence reports. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Cuban troops may have been training in Russia and may have arrived in Syria on Russian planes.
>The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Cuban troops may have been
How many anonymous US officials it takes to screw a lightbulb?
>>53926287 >but Russian and Cuban is merely slander.
why would it be slander when they are killing snackbars? if anything it shows that Russia is taken this very seriously and wants it to end quickly as possible. It's not a rumor that all. Russian special forces definitely in Syria
>>53926380 it would be nice if you actually learnt to debate properly by actually citing what claim you think i made that needs backing up if its the number of airstrikes on IS, maybe 20k is a little exaggerated, but this pic here from CENTCOM says nearly 14k a huge number and IS still strong
>>53926501 cute but her niqab isn't hiding her hair properly
>>53926506 Maybe our police want their share of "deescalating peaceful demonstrations" Reading all the news about police union demanding this and that to keep a lid on the refugee problem, i can see them going on a vacation like that...
>>53926806 >EU energy trade is done through NORDSTREAM, no one gives a fuck about hohols. U wot m8? It's the common knowledge that Nordstream alone is undercapacitated, which is why additional pipelines were always considered.
>>53926932 there are worse people in middle east? why dont you focus on them. because when this government finally ends, turkey will be normalized again, but saudi arabia, qatar etc. wont change pretty much next 50 years.
>>53926952 >U wot m8? It's the common knowledge that Nordstream alone is undercapacitated, which is why additional pipelines were always considered. That's also why there is agreement about Nordstream 2 from September. Wonder how someone from Europe could participate in it when we have sanctions against "bad russia"... and why western media were relatively silent about it.... http://www.gazprom.com/press/news/2015/september/article245837/
We have more than enough LNG-Ports throughout the EU-pipeline system, not just Schwinemünde. But it takes a LOT of energy to liquify it and then a LOT of energy to gazify it (they need to heat the valves, caus gazification absorbs energy and without it the valves would freeze shut). It's OK if you want to circumvent an embargo by Russia, but not long-term.
>>53927722 >that document is forged And you are basing this on what exactly?
>All three of these I only asked two things, but whatever
>Well known facts That is a normal excuse for people who do not have any real prove for their claims. Lets just assume that I am totally uneducated about anything happening in the middle-east, so please post your sources so that I may know as much as you do.
>>53927722 >its not true if I say its not true Wow, Mark. Wow. I mean, holy shit. You have some seriously naïve views about these people, what they do, what they believe in, what they stand for. Autism doesn't cover wilful ignorance. That's all you.
>>53927927 based on the IS logo is printed on rather than an ink stamp, clear forgery
no, its a response when something is so well known that really me giving you sources is a silly waste of time
but if you insist, here from 2011/12 Iran in Syria right from the beginning http://www.theguardian.com/world/2011/may/08/iran-helping-syrian-regime-protesters http://www.jpost.com/Middle-East/Iran-Hezbollah-assisting-in-Syria-protest-suppression
and Russia not hitting IS again well known fact, but here you go http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/russia-in-syria-us-and-turkey-claim-russian-warplanes-hitting-moderate-syrian-rebel-groups-a6685496.html
for sure you are just baiting/shitposting though so i except a reply shitting on the sources instead of the only possible response which is 'okay you are right'
>Also you can go directly through iraq, turkey to europe
but you have to cross shia territory (south iraq) or at least terretory that'd be normally under Shia Bagdad control and also through Iraq Kurdistan. so not an option, as long as shia are in control in Iraq and Syria. And were is IS active? yay, exactly there...
>>53928162 >Jpost You should have only posted the guardian article. Which btw says that the IGRC is only advising him. That is quite a bit different from what they are doing now, but I give that one to you, because I only asked for prove that they were there,
The fact that western sources say that Russia isn't bombing IS prove nothing tbh. I could post links that state exactly the opposite, so I won't accept that as proof.
dawla islamiya fil iraq wa sham = ISIS islamic state in iraq syria = ISIS ISL = ?????
sham can be translated as levant, but usually most jihadis and muslims use it only refer to as syria, even a nickname just for Damascus is ash-sham and the dawla islamiya fil iraq wa sham came from merging jabhat al-nusra li ahl as-sham into dawla islamiya fil iraq
so this is a bad translation to levant, it should be ISIS in anycase
but of course now is just dawla islamiya or ISLAMIC STATE any any other is silly because IS exist in dozens of countries
>>53928404 yep, US is uselessly bankrupting itself
>>53928177 >>53928742 oh and one other thing please civilians, family. these words don't exist anymore. anybody killed in action that was not the intended target is an Enemy Killed In Action unless actively proven otherwise. So says the wise Obongo of Burgerland https://theintercept.com/drone-papers
>>53929373 >there's no war in the East Alot of people who hate Erdogan also extremely hate the PKK. So you will see them saying they are anti Erdogan, but also support his decision of fighting the PKK.
>>53929487 I think its funny how the PKK handled this.
>2013 ceasefire >pkk retreats >ypg takes them in pkk starts fighting isis >pkk enjoys a shitton of propaganda world wide, to the point were people forget their terrorism in turkey >nothing can go wrong for the pkk, they just need to keep going, enjoying the propaganda, less people will see them as a terrorist organization, finally be seen as freedom fighters >2015 >end ceasefire in turkey >starts a new war >they were thinking with the positive propaganda they got, the US would not support turkey them and side with the kurds >they took the ISIS=TURKEY thing a bit too seriously >us responds "turkey has the right for self defense against terrorism" >pkk is getting rekt in turkey >pkk is begging for a ceasefire now
with all the shit currently being stirred up about refugees in germany i wouldn't be suprised to see the civil war end within a few months. my only worry is merkel having talks with erdogan and promoting his party. that's like giving a dog a treat after it shit on the carpet.
>>53924715 It's always interesting to see that countries that kept their independence after WW2 used lots of German weapons, while invaded countries were forced to buy crappy equipment from the USSR and America. I imagine that the re-arming of Europe was a huge business.
>>53929890 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panzer_IV >After the war, Syria procured Panzer IVs from France and Czechoslovakia, which saw combat in the 1967 Six-Day War.
>The Karabiner 98k rifle was used by the reserve branches of the IDF well into the 1960s and 1970s and saw action in the hands of various support and line-of-communications troops during the 1967 Six-Day War and the 1973 Arab-Israeli War. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karabiner_98k#Post-occupation_service
>>53929709 this is so true, pkk getting rekted, and also they lost the support of the local kurds because they fuıcked the economy at local with closing the roads and even roads inside some city now everyone hates them
>>53929872 give erdogan money to keep them. At least thats the plan. so far it went like this: turkey: we want 3b, free travel to EU for citizens and new talks to join EU EU: lol 3b for taking refugees, are you out of your mind. 1b is all we can do turkey: hue hue ok how about we give you 3b if you think that's too much surely you can use it to deal with all refugees we let thru...
>>53923766 Damn. The survivors are gonna be friends for life. Imagine how tightly-knit that group must be by now. Living with only each other for 4 years, fighting off daily waves of suicide bombers and snackbars. If this was the FSA, Hollywood would already have done a blockbuster about it.
>>53930819 Assad isn't really swimming in personel anymore. Fresh troops are needed for the large offensives and capture of tactial ground. The airbase is only tactical in that it has a symbolic value. Until the SAA can secure the entirety of east Aleppo, it will remain relatively isolated. When it is done however, it can be used as an excellent base of operations for wiping out FSA and Nusra.
So Im assuming now everyone here gets the fact that Putin has a coalition to push back American corporate Interest. It will be interesting to see how far Israel will push before Russia puts them in their place. Eating popcorn.jpg
>>53930878 >>53930963 There are other sources but i think the article i was talking about was this http://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/09/world/europe/us-moves-to-block-russian-military-buildup-in-syria.html?_r=1 >There have also been unconfirmed sightings of Russian Spetsnaz special forces at the Syrian Naval Academy, officials said. So it's a maybe, but i bet they are there to protect the bases and important persons.
>>53931386 Didn't know russians/former soviets make up such a large part of israel. Any of the people in power from russian decent? Things like that could swing the whole region, israel already cozied up to russia a little, holding safety talks and sharing some intel about targets in syria...
That's entirely possible, but if they were to engage in any combat Russia would get an ass-pounding by the UN. He has been playing by the rules and spending only as much as he has to and has been very successful. There's no reason to fuck around with ground troops if Assad is willing to risk his own.
>>53931818 It has nothing to do with over taking Assad. It has more to do with pushing American interest back. Who do think created Isis. And Putin will put ground forces in. What interesting is how Obama will handle this and how Israel will behave. Inb4 ww3
>>53931266 >IS has support is because it isn't corrupt and doesn't engage in cronyism aaaaaaaaaand you're an autist with very little grasp of the intricacies of human deception, and will therefore believe almost anything you read on the web. How many actual muslims do you know? because there are plenty round my way, and they all indulge heavily in cronyism, nepotism and religious favouritism. Stop just spouting your dreams like they are reality. Get out more. Also: I'm phoning your mum. You're not even supposed to be on this board, Mark.
>>53932240 If you weren't a moron you would realize I correctly translated "russia" and was making a joke about the bbc. If I were a German being cucked by ahmed, I would have no sense of humor too so I understand >having kebab as a national food in Germany >in German class my German professor told us kebab is a national icon >literally cucked 24/7
>>53929709 Really, the only thing to do at this point for the PKK is surrender, on their terms. As a revolutionary group, the PKK failed to inspire the entire populace to turn against the gov't. What they need to do, if they want to succeed ever, is disband and wait. If they disappear for a decade or two, blend back into the regular populace, their memory will begin fading. That's when you can strike the iron again. Under a new banner, maybe secular nationalism (but certainly not gommunism), they have a snowballs chance to succeed. But not right now.
