>Using NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered the first Earth-size planet orbiting a star in the “habitable zone”
>The discovery of Kepler-186f confirms that planets the size of Earth exist in the habitable zone of stars other than our sun.
>“The discovery of Kepler-186f is a significant step toward finding worlds like our planet Earth,” said Paul Hertz

Is this it? The start of our glorious space empire? A place to escape from the libtards, nignogs and mudslimes? We must take it before they do!
>>
Its only 151 parsecs away which is 2,850,000,000,000,000 miles from earth.
>>
>Kepler-186f is about 490 light-years from the Earth.

Yah if we leave now traveling at the speed of light we'll be there in 500 years. We need to discover a way to travel faster than the speed of light.
>>
>>40889374
There are plenty of Earth-sized planets in the habitable zones of stars that have been discovered. There's no telling how Earth-like they really are until we have the JWST observe their atmospheres. For all we know the planet in the story you posted is like Venus.
>>
>>40889374
Nignogs will overrun the Earth and send us back to the stoneage long before we have the capability to colonize the stars
>>
they found a planet thats a similar size to earth in a "habitable zone".

you can see one of those planets with your naked eye on some days
>>

*2,850,000,000,000,000,000 I mean
>>
>>40889374
It's 490 light years from us. We need FTL first.
>>
>>40889481
Which is theoretically impossible. Although honestly, in the grand scheme of the human race 500 years isn't too much to ask. We'll probably need another couple hundred before we are able to build a vessel able to sustain a society for 500+ years though.
>>
>>40889547
>theoretically possible
FTFY
>>
can we move atheists, feminist, stoners, faggots and other degenerate non white group of people to Kepler?
>>
>>40889481
you could travel there in 500 years as measured by someone observing the spacecraft

the voyagers themselves may not age very much at all, depending on how close to the speed of light that the spacecraft is traveling
>>
>>40889547
500 years is a lot to ask when you have no idea whether or not the destination is actually habitable.
>>
>finding earth like planets to move to
>trying to terraform planets
>not just genetically engineering humanity
>not just living on colony ships/ inside asteroids

its like we WANT to make it hard.

>>
>>40889374
CERN has evidence that are likely multiple dimensions. These could easily be used to travel vast distances by either bending space, or just popping out of our dimension, into another, and then back into ours, just where you want to be.
>>
>>40889630

don't forget anyone who drinks or sells alcohol, which has far worse social consequences than cannabis
>>
>a society that can exist for 500 years on a single spacecraft
not possible
look at america and america is only 238 years old

the ship would be completely destroyed by some retarded edgy sect within the first 200 years.
>>
>>40889547
>>40889481

The answer of course, is to search for something within the universe that behaves outside the laws of physics.

Namely, black holes and wormholes, along with dark matter and the like.

If we could master travel using such measures without destroying the universe, we could easily create a reality in which near-instantaneous travel between entire galaxies could be achieved
>>
>>40889374
>travel for 500 years at light speed and rebuild society from nothing
>alternatively just genocide current planets problems

Link, because "multiple dimensions" makes no fucking sense in that context. There are multiple dimensions. One is width. There's also length, height, and time.

we are looking into the past?

what if an asteroid hit it 200 years ago?

>>
>>40889630
No. We move there and leave Earth to them since it's going to shit.
>>
>>40889822
>what if an astroid hit it 200 years ago?
That's an absolutely valid question. Another reason why we need FTL travel. Scout out the planet to make sure it's still fine, then send the colonists.
>>
>>40889838
It's more interesting to see how they progress rather than how they'd run what we have now into the ground. Think about what they'd build and the structure of their society rather than making us work hard to get to the same level as we are now. But that's like my opinion man.
>>
>>40889707
look at the bright side though, no one will be there to mess that planet up.
>>40889838
someone will already have messed up a little time after landing, it's best to keep cancer at its origin.
>>
>>40889908
We had an entire sub genre of sci-fi literature dedicated to such planet exploration. But then youth stopped reading it. The dream died.
>>
>>40889822
If an asteroid hasn't hit it yet its because its in a place with a low probability of asteroid strikes and the odds of it being hit by an asteroid in the last 500 years are minimal.
>>
>>40889974
Got any recommendations, Vladmir?
>>
>>40889974
With how many people are going into STEM degrees here in the US I really think the dream has been rekindled. However we still wont be able to go straight to a planet that far away. It will take alot of experimentation setting up deeper space stations and colonizing closer planets and moons.
>>
>>40889492
I was gonna say. Scientists used to think Venus would be like earth. Which is probably why it was given the name of the roman goddess of love and beauty.

But then we sent probes and stuff and learned it was a hellish death planet.

>>40889374
Size and distance from the star are just 2 of the factors you need for a planet humans could live on. You also need a magnetic field capable of shielding the surface from solar radiation, water, and a suitable atmosphere. One that won't trap heat and boil the planet, isn't made of flesh melting acid, and at the very least, could be modified into an earthlike atmosphere.
>>
>>40889974
Well, I meant just flying by to make sure the planet wasn't a fiery landscape or something, but those kinds of stories have always been pretty cool to me.
>>
>>40889547
Are you retarded? It is absolutely possible in theory, just check out the curvature engine is projecting(long-term) NASA
>>
>>40889481
By the time we have lightspeed travel we'll also have robot bodies that can easily last 500 years.
>>
thinking of all those places with sentient beings who aren't anywhere near a shitty situation as ours makes my brain tingle. may their shit last for thousands and thousands.

Nothing makes me rage more than people who thinks they know science and how discoveries will affect us. For gods sake we find earth like planets DAILY and NOW because of a pretty picture and a small video you jump right on it. And for all you stupid people out there, that is not even a picture of the planet, that is merrily an artist depiction to capture your attention. You disappoint me pol.

They don't know what it looks like. They know if it's gas or terrestrial, its size, and where it is relative to its star. I think they may be able to tell if there's some type liquid on/ in it, but i'm not sure.
>>
>>40890252
Yeah, you have to remember that they're discovering these planets by measuring the wobble of stars due to orbiting planets and tiny flickers of light from the star from a planet passing between it and us.

We don't have a clue what these planets look like.

Old article

Kepler 186f has acid rain and a toxic atmosphere you wouldnt be able to breath unless you want your lungs to burn. Gravity is a little more, so once we do colonize it, after a few generations people will be dwarves. The water is also filled with heavy metals though its not salt water. Filtering would work and we would have a ton of clean water. The day is 29 hours with a temperate tropical weather year round but has moderate to heavy winds in most areas. 1 year is 422 days.
