It boils down to tribal alliances and religious ideology. On tribal side there's always one tribe that dominates a local region. Those that aren't like them are targeted and oppressed. Then add religion to the mix. Islam comes in many different sects, but two main ones are Sunni and Shi'ate. One group believed that one his sons should lead and the other group believed a general should lead.
