Trump was considered a joke by the MEDIA. To the actual, everyday American citizen, there was a resonance. Sure the guy is filthy rich, but he doesn't act like he knows everything or is everyone's superior. If he shows up to a factory or a job site during a campaign, he doesn't just hop in and say "Let's get a photo op", he stops, he asks questions, and he let's the locals inform him. It's the difference between letting people THINK you respect them and then actually seeing you respect them.
