Because it's the zeitgeist. Most people cannot question the norms they live in. They believe they are doing so, but they're actually just questioning the norms of a bygone era, thinking themselves progressive-minded for being against the dominant ideology of the 1500s.

This. I'm an oldfag pharma scientist and it's horrifying to watch science become Science. Scientific methodology is just a systematic way of answering questions about the natural world. It provides no insight into the metaphysical world of your soul, your identity, the nature and origins of good and evil, or anything else that isn't a tangible part of the natural world.

>>
>>140447965
This
It's a method, not a collection of absolute truths (admittedly a fact that both political aisles forget)

On the one hand, science is iterative and fallible and dependent on the accuracy of permanently inaccurate tools (that are getting better all the time)

On the other, just as you apply reason that you aren't likely to get killed walking outside and so err on the side of likelihood, you must also act on science similarly. It is safer to act as if the most well supported findings at a given moment are true than not, if we are to acknowledge that every decision we make, personally and politically, is based on imperfect information and probabilities

Grad student in CS here. Most research we have done so far is so simple we haven't even begun to scratch the surface of what we can do. Once you hit the boundary of what human knowledge has accumulated over time it typically becomes clear that certain areas are still in flux and thus relatively easy to expand upon. I've thought on this subject for years now: where is the original, provable, truth? You can't know anything without assuming something to be true, akin to having faith in something for no logical reason. This irritates me to no end desu, since this means there's no objectively best way to live and most truths are more determined by the public's general consensus rather than any type of irrefutable proof.

Because discusing religion is easier than discusing reality issues like soft science and shit and even more easier than getting educated enough to cast a serious and respectable opinion on hard science, just look the different transit between any board and /sci.

Also, I guess some people really find self entitling and empowering the act of questioning a very subjective matter such as religion. Religion per sé is as complex or absurd as you like to approach it, but is opportunistically comfortable and biased to look at it in a cynic way just to make yourself feel smarter.

Also too, is the only thing some people can actually brag about choosing, participate or change. Is not like everybody could have and active opinion on hard science (stem).

>>
>>140450849
There are things you and I can NEVER know. Heisenberg's principle is an excellent example of this.
The more certain you are of a particle's position at σx, the less certain you can be of its momentum at σp. Certainty literally creates uncertainty, in another regard. In a way, the probability theory equivalent of Newton's third law.

Tests are, further, not definitive. That is not how epistemology works.
I don't purport to have all the answers--nor is human logic a complete enough system to discern all answers--but I'll still shoot down any human that believes their tests and understanding complete.

Worth remembering that humility of knowledge is itself wisdom.

Science is this ethereal knowledge that is set in stone and can be called upon without understanding. Your average person's view and knowledge of science is essentially Rick and Morty. The Sutra on Totality

Monks, I will teach you the totality of life. Listen, attend carefully to it and I will speak.

What, monks, is totality ?

It is just the eye
with the objects of sight,
the ear with the objects of hearing,
the nose with the objects of smell,
the tongue with the objects of taste,
the body with the objects of touch
and the mind with the objects of cognition.

This, monks, is called totality.

Now, if anyone were to say, “Aside from this explanation of totality, I will preach another totality,” that person would be speaking empty words, and being questioned would not be able to answer. Why is this ? Because that person is talking about something outside of all possible knowledge.

Science is the action to try in every single measurable way to prove that what you know is wrong and incorrect. So you can fix your knowledge and try again to make yourself wrong, repeating the process until you can't be wrong until someone finds a way to make your work be wrong so you start again.

Basically, science is mental masochism.

Science treats uncertainty with "we must learn more - dig deeper - question our technique and probe the assumptions"

Religion treats uncertainty with "God will provide. Don't ask too many questions".

I'm not here to defend millennials (op is clearly low-value bait), but to be human is to question, reflect and constantly be on the fence between comfort and chaos.
>>
>>140459337
this is exactly what one would expect a millennial to say. I understand your viewpoint and isn't completely invalid but let me explain as a 40 year old scientist. Science at first leads you away from religion, seeking objective truth, but in the process it brings you back to it in the end full circle. Buddhist monks discovered the first law of thermodynamics (reincarnation) and Newtons third law of motion (karma) 1000's of years before science ever existed.

The Sutra on Totality

Monks, I will teach you the totality of life. Listen, attend carefully to it and I will speak.

What, monks, is totality ?

It is just the eye
with the objects of sight,
the ear with the objects of hearing,

You see you think science and religion are two different thing but that is only to those who are not Illuminated. All religions come from the "source" and if you do the research you will find it, that is where God is, but it takes intensive dedication and research also see >>140458510

Geez.... Science is a method of determining whether a hypothesis is valid or not. It is not a belief system. Religion is a belief system, because you can't prove it, you simply take it on faith that the person who wrote the bible was telling the truth.

>Climate change "consensus"

Global warming is bullshit based on a bullshit computer model using a miner function on a non linear equation on the atmosphere of Venus it is complete horseshit and never has been and never will be accurate, but (((they))) will never mention the model as the source of this consensus. GIGO garbage in garbage out

Millennials got trolled out on the Internet by gen y who were just doing shit for teh lulz. They're the first and only generation to believe that because it is online, it must be true; the generation of retards that use Wikipedia as a primary source and so on. You could forgive your grandma and maybe your mom for such shit but not the first gen to actually start life web-enabled. Millennial s summed up in a word? Gullible.
Obviously there exceptions to the rule. Not a lot though so it's unsurprising so many are narcisists and liberal.

do you realize that this dude makes this thread every two hours and has been doing so for roughly a year now?

I can't tell if it's legit autism, semi-automated data mining spam, or just flat out slide bullshit, but it always follows the same formula. He uses this chick or Steve-O (who is like 45 by the way) as the image.

Remember when the sugar industry paid Harvard scientists to say that sugar won't make you fat, that it's animal fat that does? It is always a possibility that scientists are lying for money on any given subject, and if there are no grants to scientists who disagree and those scientists are shut out of the debate because "there is no debate!", then science isn't so objective is it?

>>140447865
this
depends on which journal the study is being published in and whether it actually passes a peer review process. "A study shows" can be a very dangerous phrase

pretty sure it's inherited from british common law. there was a nipple exposure section in the Magna Carta, bro, look it up

continental europeans never really had this system and established their own body of nipple law starting during the reforms of the French revolution.

In this thread, a few have pondered upon the deep philosophical questions. The rest are just regurgitating normie stuff they heard from discovery channel. They are simpletons just like cavemen who have absolute certainty in what they see on the surface.

Do you even Godel.

Yet Science has just as much dogma as religion. How long were scientists certain Einsteins theory was correct? So many convinced and yet it was wrong. Explain that using your same defense. Science doesn't question any of its findings until the cold hard truth reveals itself.

Science is a process, not an institution or set of beliefs.
The scientific method has well defined limits, but no dogmas.

Science and religion have nothing to do with one another, and you ought to divorce yourself from any absurd posturing by atheists or christians which posit otherwise.
