CJD can occour sporadically (i.e. a brain cell fucks up and emits a prion particle on it's own and then causes you brain to fission like a nuclear reactor.) The chances are remote but with such a large population you're bound to find a few cases in the western world.

vCJD's been all but eradicated on the back of our government fucking us over with lax laws on animal feed back in the 1970's-90's. Basically the prion disease occurs in sheep (scrapie) or in wild elk as chronic wasting disease, the caucuses of which were rendered into animal feed and fed to beef cattle. The prion jumped species to these cattle and jumped species again to the human consumers of the cattle (think really shitty burgers filled with testicles and spinal tissue.)

Although it's certainly been cracked down on the gestation period of vCJD can be decades. So if this guy was infected via vCJD (which is more likely given his comparably young age.) He would've been infected over 20 years ago before the link between BSE and CJD was established or the additional of surgical/ blood product transmission was identified.

Basically, if you were born after 1989 and didn't have brain/ spinal surgery during the 1990's you're probably not infected and a Big Mac won't kill you (this way).
