I bought into the meme and regret it now. No one smiles here, if you do you get funny looks. People here have bad manners, the driving etiquette is especially bad. There's a very liberal attitude when it comes to stealing from your employer and talking behind people's backs. Almost everyone feigns patriotism and piety, the former means they can't take a joke and the latter means if you knock a girl up she will never abort it. The quality of life is very low due to pathetic wages with prices virtually the same as in western nations. Bread and booze is cheap, but clothes, electronics, fuel and books are equally if not more more expensive than in London. The price of housing adjusted for income has got to be among the highest in Europe.

It is a good place to visit, because your western money will get you a lot further and they're suckers for foreigners, and because it's certainly more pleasant than Hungary or Belarus or something. I regret not visiting the Czechs before making the decision, that seems like the best of both worlds and Protestantism definitely is a factor.

tl;dr: it's a shitty country full of shitty people most of whom deserve the label they get
