The problem with the current minimum wage is that folks are working full time and still qualifying for social programs such as SNAP and TANF. These business are socializing the cost of labor onto the taxpayer. The reason nationalist types defend "shit wages" as you call them is because without the welfare state or illegal immigration there would be no need for a set minimum wage. Because the workers in the area will able to negotiate adequate wages for labor agreements on their own.

For example if the going rate for a construction work in a given area is say $23/ hour the worker themselves will negotiate some agree either slightly above or below that. Now without welfare to add increased tax or illegals flooding the labor supply people would be able to live a decent standard of living on relatively low wages.

Add in competing firms or businesses and innovation is bound to occur to further lower the cost of living. With smaller government this only further increases the standard of living. If the government doesn't give foreign aid like shekels to iseral or play world police then less tax dollars would be wasted. Leading to more money in the average joe's pocket to spend however they like.

Now this may sound like an appeal for an unregulated free market but it isn't. An unregulated market is just as bad as a nationalized one. You have to prevent monopolies, trusts and other predatory actions from occurring because it will polarize the nation into poor and rich and that will only lead to social unrest.

I don't think there should be a national minimum wage. In Finland unions collectively negotiate minimum wage separately for every field, so a service sector wagecuck, for example, will have a lower "minimum wage" than someone working a job that requires more qualifications and bears more responsibility. Plus allowing different fields to have different compensation accommodates for the different expectations they face. For example, if I have to answer a business phone call outside office hours, I get paid an hour's wage for every starting hour that the call takes. Employees in many other fields typically don't have to deal with shit like that, so it's good that it's taken into account in my collective bargaining agreement. If we just had a minimum wage things like that might go unaddressed.

On top of that, employers are unionized too. I think it's a system that works: no nationally mandated minimum wage, just employees' unions negotiating with employers' unions to seek out a fair and balanced system of wages and benefits on a field-by-field basis.

Minimum wage doesn't even address the big issue with modern Capitalism, which is that major corporations can get away with hoarding obscene profits in the hands of billion dollar bonus checks to a small group of executives and give nothing to the employees who actually worked to create those profits.

All minimum wage does is fuck over small businesses. Large businesses have no problem paying minimum wage as they will still earn high profits. Mom'n'Pop shops often are forced to operate at a loss, and a minimum wage hike can actually force them to close down.

What we should do instead is remove the minimum wage and replace it with a minimum profit sharing margin, such as 30%/X where X is the number of employees. This would be brilliant since small businesses are usually already paying their employees more than this, and it would force more profitable business to cut bonus checks to everyone not just a few.
