If you need a blast shelter you chose your home very, very badly.

If need fallout shelter that's an actual perfectly legitimate use for shipping containers above ground.

For what purpose..
The fallout will last longer than you can stay in some stupid tuna can.

I'd rather die in the blast with a beating gook heart in my hand.
An honorable death in defense of the state.

But the coolest ones are in the mountains, that's where the project offices are, three of them are still being used, one outside of Charlottesville that still has the at&t logo, but gozmodo did a story on them and found out it's a spook bunker, then there's Mt. Weather, and in PA there's Raven Rock, the only other one in VA that isn't being used is owned privately

He got grants to do all kinds of shit, but unlike the many insane attempts at pesticides he got paid to try in the 30's, the shelter from the 50's is actually pretty good.

I don't fuck around down there at all other then to flush the toilet and run the shower and sink once a year or so, and to restock some things every few years.

90% of the fallout is gone within the first 48 hours.

It's recommended that you have a fallout shelter that can keep you safe for at least 2 weeks, but preferably 2-3 months.

2 years would be extreme overkill and unnecessary, but you could do that.

Yet never. Not a single world leader is stupid enough to use a nuke. Either it will cause their little shithole of a country to be completely annihilated, or it will, worse, be met with conventional response - which would make MAD completely worthless as a doctrine in the modern world and reduce the planet to widespread open conflict between major powers again.

I lol at the money rich people are pissing away their money on these bunkers. I won't get into the logistic nightmares of these things but the fact that they think that they'll be able to emerge from a catastrophic event (mainly an atomic war/meteor hit) and carry on thinking they'll still have the same influence and social standing is hilarious. Hell, they are more likely to face mutiny by the staff they hire then be ran through with a pitchfork later

its the naive belief that that you can just wait things out and it will be back to status quo

and I dunno where you're getting the anti capitalist bit but having read a lot about the huge survival bunkers that these wealthy folk are building for major events, it's a literal burning of cash for delaying the inevitible

No one ever mentioned that, and you assumed it because it's something you latched onto in your little fantastical liberal head.
Nuclear war would send us back to the stone ages.
Having financial wealth is in no way indicative of what things are extrinsically.
Obtaining wealth fixes the now, and makes life easier.
When the now is destroyed, you're sent back to square one.

>and I dunno where you're getting the anti capitalist bit but having read a lot about the huge survival bunkers that these wealthy folk are building for major events, it's a literal burning of cash for delaying the inevitible
If you had a family and created something that mattered, no amount of money could cover the costs to provide a shred of safety for them.

In Finland it's mandatory that every apartment building has bomb shelter or shelter nearby. Our capitol has massive underground network of tunnels which are capable to house over 500 000 residents. I live in smaller town but still there's massive cave under me which works as shelter if needed.

This is completely false. Nuclear fallout output is measured by the formula called the Rule of Seven, which states that for every sevenfold increase in time after detonation, a tenfold decrease in radiation level will occur. Therefore:

After 7 hours -> 90% of the initial radiation will dissipate
After 7*7 hours -> 90% of the remaining radiation will dissipate
After 7*7*7 hours -> 90% of that radiation will dissipate.

Thus, 99.9% of the radiation encountered at detonation will have dissipated by two weeks. By the end of 14 weeks, only 1/10000th of the radiation experienced at detonation will still exist.

And? We're an island with 95% empty space and have tested nukes here before in the red nothing we have in the middle of the country.
Realistically after they blow up the asians and niggers in Melbourne and Sydney and the retired boomers in Brisbane, the rest of the country will probably still function fairly normally. We already have shit internet, our politicians couldn't find their own dicks with a map, and everything costs a fortune; nothing much will change.

If you were in a bunker/shelter where would you get your sun/Vitamin D? Would you put special lights in or try and get some sort of radiation proof skylight?

I wonder if that would be easier to do with a bunker in the side of a mountain rather than just straight down.

Highly unlikely. Chernobyl was a million times more radioactive than a typical thermonuclear warhead, as it was basically a continuous open-air nuclear reaction that spewed out thousands of tons of alpha particle-laced smoke for days and weeks at a time.

But really, so long as you mostly stay indoors during the first two weeks (and at least entirely the first 48 hours) you will have a very good chance. Simply using masking tape and impermeable tarps taped over windows, doors, and vents will block most alpha particles, perhaps as much as 90% of the concentration of the outside air. The average basement, with no modifications, will cut radiation to roughly 1/100 of the outside air, and this can be doubled simply by sealing off any vents, windows, etc and piling up mass around the sides and roof.

This. Alpha particles are quite low energy as far as radiation goes, they can get stopped by materials as thin as a sheet of paper. As long as you're not inhaling radio decaying dust after the blast you'll likely be ok.

A good way to think of radiation is as light that comes from the bomb dust that goes THROUGH non dense things (like wood) and cooks your insides and gives you cancer. You could theoretically survive fallout inside a giant balloon that just keeps the dust at least 100 meters away from you until it decays away.

Like the other guy said after about 2 to 4 weeks it would be safe enough to come out and QUICKLY move away by vehicle to a non contaminated area.

So does that mean a lot of people would probably stay underground for way too long giving you pretty free reign on the surface, or would they be so ill-prepared they'd come up pretty early anyway OR are so many people going to survive on the surface that it won't ever look like Mad Max/Fallout realistically?

Interesting stuff.

Many airbases and army bases will not be hit. Most do not carry nuclear weapons or control the deployment of nuclear weapons, and will be ignored in the first (and only) counterforce-strike.

>>140183277
>A good way to think of radiation is as light that comes from the bomb dust that goes THROUGH non dense things (like wood) and cooks your insides and gives you cancer

This is a common misconception. The vast majority of the radiation produced from nuclear weapons (like 95%) are alpha particles; ionized particles so weak they will not even penetrate the skin at contact distance or even a sheet of paper. They are dangerous not because they "cook your insides" but because they are breathed in as dust and their radiation is so weak that it can not penetrate the skin and only leave the body as eliminated slowly by natural metabolism. Once inside the body, ionized particles kill some cells but mostly cause mutations in the linings of things like intestines or lungs, creating cancers years later. Virtually all alpha particles can be eliminated by filtration, even a simple gas mask with no other equipment will allow someone to walk outside during the first couple weeks (although some care must be taken to ensure these particles do not make it back into the shelter by hanging onto or hair clothing).

The other two main types of ionized radiation released by nuclear weapons (beta/gamma) can indeed "cook your insides" but they either are only generated at the very beginning of the blast and dissipate instantly at roughly the same exposure distance as the fireball (gamma radiation) or are only emitted by some "hot" objects near the detonation site and can be blocked by commonly worn clothing (beta radiation).
