If you want to say "leader" in German, you can basically only say Anführer.
Führen is "to lead".
Anführer der Kindergruppe - Leader of the kids group
Anführer des Protestes - Leader of the protest

Führer is short for Anführer, but not used much anymore today. It's a last name, though, so you'll see some people named Peter Führer etc.

Führer can be translated as guide or leader, depending on context.

For example there is a "Bergführer" a mountain guide, who guides a group of not so experienced climbers to the top of a mountain.

...führer also means someone who runs a car or locomotive etc. like Lokomotivführer, Fahrzeugführer and therefore the drivers licence is called Führerschein (or Fahrerlaubnis)
