It doesn't work well because the people who were in charge of the design process figured everything could just be magically implemented in software and then found out that software is really really really really really hard.

Oh and also they were prototyping and going into production at the same time, which was a fucking disaster which meant the software requirements keep changing even now.

Also like 90% of the cost of software is bug-hunting and they have barely even started that after implementing like 500 million lines of code.
