I cant speak for the north, but when I was stationed in SK for two tours in the US army, I can tell you the south was a shit hole. Their officers would train with us and get caught stealing food all the time from the mess to take home to their families. These were officers, not fresh enlisted soldiers. For some reason, pigeons were really bad in the cities, and the locals would always bitch about people feeding them, so of course our younger guys would go and buy food just to throw to them. It was a shitty experience to be stationed in that shit hole, with shit hole people. I only went up to the DMZ a few times while training, and it was fairly boring, just people staring at each other with binoculars.
