Blue states tend to have stronger local economies, which encourages politicians to tax more and expand the government. This also attracts a bigger immigrant population which always votes left. They always vote left.

The closest approximation is that blue states have a lot of urban population, the type of population that allows for investment banking, programming, and research-based jobs to become profitable. You can't start a game making business in the middle of Nebraska, but you certainly could in places with condensed urban populations.

These populations create a skew in the supply/demand for necessities. Everyone needs housing, so you can't just not buy into it, creating a huge demand. With the increased population, there is an even larger demand, driving up housing prices further. This means that all of the people living in the city that don't have a high paying job or rich parents need to live on Government handouts. That means that these urban-poor people vote for more Government. The middle class in blue states struggles because of this, whereas red states have a thriving middle class.

Success creates liberalism. Not the other way around. The most liberal states tend to be coastal which means they benefit heavily from trade. In fact a trade surplus or trade deficit makes for very wealthy coastal states. The worst for them is low export/imports.
