Basically, there was an aristocratic ruling class that felt it had more in common with aristocrats from other countries (whom they were often family members with) than they did with the lower classes. This is the original "right". When the "left" came into the world, they preached that the rulers should represent the "Spirit of the People". American and French Revolutions are the start of "nationalism" proper.

The situation has flipped now, with a "global elite" thats centre-left and feels more in common with the rest of the global elite than it does with the people of any particular country.
