Do you guys think September 9th will be when US and SK preemptive strike? Apparently that is a major NK holiday.
>>
To the guy who wanted antenna advice in the previous thread, you should experiment with a dipole made for a specific band. If you find yourself listening at night a lot more than during the day, maybe cut your antenna for somewhere between 5-10 MHz or so. You could have a day and night antenna, the day antenna cut for 10-18 MHz or so.

Also depending on your home's construction and so on the attic might be a poor place for an antenna.

Hambro here joining another Skykang thread. Let me take this opportunity to remind you to buy your own short wave radio. I recommend a portable unit which can take battery power, which has SSB, and ideally which can take an external antenna.

If the shit hits the fan, it's almost certain that the Internet will be turned off or severely degraded, and useful information will be difficult to get. You will probably not be able to use the WebSDR receiver, which is in the Netherlands. It's important to have your own radio.

I don't recommend one of those DV sticks that people use with SDRs, though. A typical laptop runs for maybe 5-10 hours, a shortwave receiver like the one I recommend (Sony ICF-SW7600GR) will run for a couple hundred hours on a pair of AAs.

I'll be here to answer any questions and so on. If you want to buy a radio please tell me your budget, I'll try to help you out. If you're already an experienced radio user and want to get something nice and fancy, I can help with that too.

The radio I recommend in the post you replied to, it's the last affordable consumer set made by Sony in Japan, has AM Sync (which is a really nice and fairly rare feature) and a good receiver. It lacks some of the fancy doodads which hams are typically after but it's only $140 or something. If you can swing the cost, get the matching AN-LP1 loop antenna as well, it gives you directional capability for homing in on a signal or avoiding nearby interference, and fits into a tiny bag.

I keep the radio and antenna in my car in case I want to SWL while out and about.

Kangs have their own radio hobby, it's CB radio. They install massive illegal amps in their cars and have radio parties known as 'signal checks' where they all try to blast over each others' signals. It's truly an authentic American innovation in the radio hobby.

We'll start with what we do know.

SKYKING is operated by the United States Military. Some of the messages are transmitted from Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Nebraska (the ones that end in "Offutt Out"). This is the headquarters of U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM) which is charged with space operations (such as military satellites), information operations (such as information warfare), missile defense, global command and control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (C4ISR), global strike and strategic deterrence (the United States nuclear arsenal), and combating weapons of mass destruction.
SKYKING messages have been transmitted since at least the early 1980s.
During times of tensions, or unusual behavior by Russia, China or North Korea, SKYKING messages broadcast more often. In March of 2015, Russia launched surprise military exercises near the borders of Finland and Norway (the latter of which is a NATO Member). When this happened, a SKYKING message lasting 34 minutes was broadcast. Unprecedented by most previous transmitted messages, and, as of the date of this post, none have been nearly that long. (EDIT: OCTOBER, 31 2016 SAW A 42 CHARACTER CODE TRANSMITTED)

You can listen to that SKYKING message here. It is long. https://youtu.be/HHOI4e26TZk

Only for receiving though, right? I'm no radio guy, but to send something you'd need to put some serious power behind that, like a couple hundred watts?
>>
Anybody got that one?
>>
>>139833876

bro you know this https://vocaroo.com/i/s08UVn08tqfS

hes even interrupting shit with his counts now
>>
>>139833843
Yeah that's for a fairly simple short wave receiver.

However with a few watts you can go worldwide with a ham radio. We have invented special digital radio modes which are designed to work with very little power but very efficiently, like jt65 and psk31, and good old morse code is very efficient too. Look up QRP, there are a bunch of hams who try to get the longest range comms possible with only a tiny bit of power. It's one of the many sub-interests in the radio hobby.

My longest distance contact yet, almost 6000 miles, was with only 5 watts of power. Ionospheric conditions can greatly enhance communications, and certain frequencies are known for their long range potential.

8992 occasionally has a french berau broadcast on the same channel, generally speaking though, the lower the frequency the longer the broadcast distance.
