Women were seen as virtuous due to the feminisation of piety.

In the middle ages, the common stereotype was a man would try to be virtuous, and be led astray by devious women. After urbanisation really took off in the industral revolution, people in cities were confronted with many social problems which men fell into rather than women. Piety began to be feminised; the man was the drunkard, the gambler, the woman was the pious one who tried to keep the home afloat.

Now, of course, this was still a very male-dominated society, which had a curious effect when it come to the role of female sexuality: that became pietised as well. Chastity, virtue etc. being hallmarks of piety, women were stereotyped as chaste, as the men who created these sterotypes did not feel female sexuality, being men, and so pretended it was so. Even when men were the pious stereotypes in the middle ages, any man who suggested that men are sexually attracted to virtue would be laughed out of the room! All men knew that such a concept was nonsense; they could feel it within themselves. however, they cannot feel female sexuality, so the stereotype of female sexuality being innately pure could take hold.

From this comes the idea that female sexuality is innately attracted to virtue.

Now, get people in a culture that believes this, and then start telling them that not screwing everything (attractive) with a dick is oppression, and you get what we have now; people in the middle ages knew that female sexuality was just as bad as male sexuality when it came to virtue, but we fetishise and pietise it to this day: see how people reach and stretch to label unnattractive men as somehow morally defective, pretending that women can "sniff it out" somehow, as if even a cursory glance at abusive relationships shows that neither women nor men have this special ability. To criticise a woman's choice of partner is to attack piety itself, as female sexuality is identified with piety.
