Hard practice makes you hard.

I think a lot of westerners are afraid to practice hard because it means giving up most of their western views.

So you see a handful of hardcore buddhists (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanissaro_Bhikkhu comes to mind) who are badass, and a lot of would-be practitioners who aren't willing to dedicate themselves to the practice or just want a personality trait to share with others.
