Although the legalities were all pretty much constant, a lot of the time people looked the other way for coloureds and indians when they would have evicted blacks or arrested blacks

yeah, there were 7 different classifications for coloureds. Whites, blacks, coloureds, indians: they all had separate schools, couldn't intermarry, lived in different areas. The coloured areas looked better than the black ones, the Indian areas looked better than the coloured ones and obviously whites had the most scenic places.
