I'm looking to return to church.

Which denomination is best?

I was raised Catholic & New Age. Went to a megachurch for a while that fell apart magnificently and I devolved into a leftist. Want to return good, bible believing community.

Which church would you pick?

Salvation by faith alone
Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Actually following what the Bible says about baptism
Need to believe.
Acts 8
36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

Fully submerged in water.
Acts 8:38
And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
Romans 6:4
Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
Matthew 3:16
And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
John 3:23
And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.

this.

No other Religion will zealously strife to live as closely to what the word of God commands as JW.
No other faith is so coherent and free of contradictions or "divine mysteries".
Read the Gospels and Acts and compare how things were handled 1900 Years ago with how JW handle things now, you will see that its almost identical. (Minus the miracles).

Going to the Kindgdom hall does not mean that you will or have to convert, but its a good way to get a first face-to-face impression.

references like
>the father is greater than I am
>the son cannot do anything by himself
>no one knows the hour (of the end), not the son, not the angels but only the father
How can that be if they are all 3 one person?
Also nowhere is the holy spirit described as a person like Jesus or God.
Not to mention the crass contradiction to everything we know about God from the Hebrew scriptures (aka. The Old Testament)
The only thing that points to a duumvirate is the beginning of the gospel of John but only if you mistranslate it badly.

>>jesus does not mention the "144,000"
Revelation does. And Revelation was given by Jesus to John, therefore it comes from Jesus.

>don't worry you can still go to heaven tho"
No, loyal humans without the hope to rule in heaven will instead live forever in paradise here on earth, as God intended it in the first place. After all if the Government is in heaven and everyone is there too, over whom will this government rule then?

Go back to the Catholic Church or find an Eastern Orthodox one. They're the closest to tradition and should be the exact opposite of the New Age shit (unless they're not compromised locally). Any other denominations dilute the teachings and are breeding grounds for degenerate liberal "atheist but spiritual" types. Sola scriptura/ sola fide/ sola gratia is all wishful thinking. If you're serious about going back, commit to it entirely.

Jesus clearly makes a wordplay to point that Peter will be the foundation of his church. The fact that there are two words for rock in Greek doesn't mean it's not Peter.

its the same word in greek too, but the article is different. Well the words too but only a little bit.

Im going to cite from the article since apparently you cannot or will not read it:

>onsider the answers to three questions: (1) Does the Bible support the claim that Peter was the first pope? (2) What does history teach about the origin of the succession of popes? (3) Do the conduct and teachings of the popes support their claim to be Peterโ€™s successor?

>Augustine, a revered Church Father, at one time held that the congregation was built on Peter. However, toward the end of his life, he changed his view of what Jesusโ€™ words meant. In a work known as Retractations, Augustine argued that it was Jesus on whom the church, that is the Christian congregation, was built, not Peter.

>True, the apostle Peter features prominently in the Gospels. Jesus singled out three of his apostlesโ€”John, James, and Peterโ€”to be present with him on a few special occasions. (Mark 5:37, 38; 9:2; 14:33) Jesus entrusted Peter with โ€œthe keys of the kingdom of the heavens,โ€ which Peter used to open up the way to the Kingdomโ€”first to the Jews and proselytes, then to the Samaritans, and finally to the Gentiles. (Matthew 16:19; Acts 2:5, 41; 8:14-17; 10:45) In accord with his outgoing personality, Peter at times served as spokesman for the apostles as a whole. (Acts 1:15; 2:14) But do these facts make Peter head of the early congregation?

>Although Peter was given great responsibility, nowhere in the Bible do we find him claiming to be the head of the congregation and, as such, making decisions for the disciples as a group. In his letter, he called himself โ€œan apostleโ€ and โ€œan older manโ€โ€”nothing more.โ€”1 Peter 1:1; 5:1.

>When and how, then, did the concept of a papacy come about? The idea that it was acceptable for one man to seek prominence over his fellow believers began to take root while the apostles were still alive. How did the apostles view such thinking?

>The apostle Peter himself told the men who were taking the lead in the congregation not to be โ€œlording it over those who are Godโ€™s inheritanceโ€; they were to gird themselves with lowliness of mind toward one another. (1 Peter 5:1-5) The apostle Paul warned that from within the congregation, men would rise who would โ€œspeak twisted things to draw away the disciples after themselves.โ€ (Acts 20:30) Toward the end of the first century C.E., the apostle John wrote a letter in which he strongly denounced a disciple by the name of Diotrephes. Why the reprimand? One reason was that this man โ€˜liked to have the first placeโ€™ in the congregation. (3 John 9) Such counsel from the apostles acted as a restraint, thwarting for a time the ambitions of those who were seeking prominence.โ€”2 Thessalonians 2:3-8.

>Shortly after the last of the apostles died, individuals began to gain more prominence. The Cambridge History of Christianity says: โ€œProbably there was no single โ€˜monarchicalโ€™ bishop in Rome before the middle of the second century.โ€ By the third century, the bishop of Rome established himself as the highest authority, at least for parts of the church.* To add weight to the claim that the bishop of Rome has superior authority, some have compiled a list of Peterโ€™s successors.

>However, this list provides little support for the claim. Why? First, some names on the list cannot be verified. More important, the foundation of the list is flawed. How so? Even if Peter did preach in Rome, as some secular literature from the first and second centuries implies, there is no proof that he was head of the congregation there.
>>
>>139707175
>>139706708
>One evidence that Peter was not head of the congregation in Rome is that when the apostle Paul wrote his letter to the Romans, he included an extensive list of Christians there. Yet, he did not mention Peter at all. (Romans 16:1-23) If Peter were head of the congregation, could we imagine that Paul overlooked Peter or snubbed him?

>Note, too, that about the time that Peter wrote his first inspired letter, Paul wrote a second letter to Timothy. In that letter, Paul did not hesitate to mention Rome. Actually, Paul wrote six letters from Rome, all without any mention of Peter.

>Some 30 years after Paul wrote his letters, the apostle John wrote three letters and the book of Revelation. Nowhere in these writings did John mention that the congregation in Rome was the most prominent one, nor did he refer to a leader of the church who held the supreme office of an alleged successor of Peter. Neither the Bible nor the evidence from history supports the claim that Peter established himself as the first bishop of the congregation in Rome.

I think this shows that at least in the 1st century there was no pope and it certainly was not peter

How can this be if they are separate persons?
Also, the holy spirit is described as a person like god here in John 14 as someone who will abide with you and teach you
Not to mention the numerous references to "us" in the old testament, the "spirit of god" hovering over the waters, the Son of God in Psalm 2, Psalm 45, Isaiah where the redeemer is to be named "everlasting father", seems like a crass contradiction for Jesus who was definitely "NOT" the father, I know :)

>revelation was given by jesus to john
hmm, I thought it went "all scripture is inspired by god" or something like that
also seems like a pretty important detail Jesus could have mentioned when he was discussing heaven and hell

> After all if the Government is in heaven and everyone is there too, over whom will this government rule then?
maybe this government could rule over the souls in heaven who are with god, shouldn't be too hard for an all-powerful god who meant to send the saved to heaven to worship him

>6Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

I'm currently suffering from a major life threatening illness. I need to return to my home state immediately.

I went to a baptist church for three years straight. When I got sick no one from my church came to help me. No one brought a meal. No one called to check up on me. No one offered to help me pack up my stuff in the most dire and terrible time in my life. Eventually the pastor said he could come by one day to help me put stuff in boxes, but this was after months of the entire church abandoning and ignoring me

Baptist are full of shit, Many of them simply don't have the spirit or compassion of Christ in their hearts. This is what happens when you tell people they are saved by faith alone. They make zero effort to make themselves a better person.

My mother goes to a born again church. If those people were in my state every single member of her church would be here to help me.

You can judge a tree by its fruit. Spend enough time around people and it's easy to see whose really got the spirit of Christ within them and who does not

see: https://www.jw.org/en/bible-teachings/questions/trinity/
and
https://www.jw.org/en/publications/magazines/wp20091101/myth-god-is-a-trinity/
The spirit is not a distinct person that exist independently, instead it is the active force of God which he can use to do whatever he wants. This assumption does not contradict any of the texts you cited.

>hmm, I thought it went "all scripture is inspired by god" or something like that
yeah, and? See my posts above "the son does not do anything out of himself..." indirectly it came from God and since "I and the father are one" there is no contradiction between what Jesus said and what God would have said.

Also note that Jesus also said "I am the good vineyard" and "I am the way" Do you think that he suddenly sprouted grapes after he said the former or stones after the latter? Instead he was using a hyperbole to get his point across "a camel through the hole of a needle" for example.

>maybe this government could rule over the souls in heaven who are with god,
But it does not according to the bible. Instead it rules over the people on earth.
The 144000 are a "new creation" something never seen before and the total exception to the rule that earth is made for humans to inhabit. This is also why Jesus can be called "everlasting father". That and his ransom sacrifice which makes eternal life in heaven and earth possible in the first place.

>after all, how will they perfectly worship god without ...
That would imply that a perfect human being is not perfect. contradiction.

no, the christian congregation did. The church as we know it today started with First Council of Nicaea (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Council_of_Nicaea) which was led by a pagan emperor. By now the corruption predicted by Jesus had already overwhelmed the true faith, evidenced by the fact that tons of pagan beliefs were suddenly declared christian. Not just the trinity but also the immortal soul, Hell as a place of torment, worshiping of saints, Chrismas in December, Easter with the pagan symbols of fertility, the Hare and Egg...

Bitch I can see you from my house, its a 10 minute walk to the actual building of United Nations here in Geneva.

Joke aside, please do some research yourself at least. Right now you are just repeating what you heard somewhere. This makes you look either very foolish or very trollish.

>I'm looking to return to church.
It an important decision, Anon.
I live in a rural area and going to church is seen as normal. We're socially conservative, by which I mean strong family values, work ethic, neighbourliness, charity and so on. I live in a smal town (5,000 population) in rural Northern England. The sense of community is strong.
>Which denomination is best?
Whichever one fits. As long as you believe the following three things, you can call yourself a Christian:
1.Jesus Christ lived.
2.He was crucified.
3.He was resurrected.

These are vital. And all denominations accept these truths. Accept them and study the Bible. Study it with deliberate intent and mindfulness. And pray. Always, pray. Prayer is a technique to touch the Divine. You can do it when you're going about your daily activities. It's like meditating; it brings peace. Always maintain your focus on God and His word.

I'm Anglican High Church. It's very close to Catholicism but we don't accept the Roman Catholic Pope as arbiter nor "the Vicar of Christ". It's closer to Eastern Orthodoxy. Denomination can be as simple as going to the nearest church.
Here's an Orthodox chant of the Liturgy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-J2kuSCLvE

For the Holy Bible, I recommed:
https://www.biblegateway.com/

Matthew 7: verses 7 & 8 (NIV)
>7 โ€œAsk and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
You're making an important move to simply ask. You will be answered.

Pic is of the inside of my church. It's very old, over 900 years. It was built originally in wood on an old Anglo Saxon pagan site. I go in there when I seek peace. It's always got the same temperature whether it's cold or hot outside, and is so quiet. It puts my into a state of prayer by simply entering. It allows me to focus on the Divine.
God Bless, Anon.

yes.
Its actually quite sad when you consider that doing what the first christians under the direct tutelage of Jesus and God did, gets us labeled as not "true" christians.

By the way, none of the points I quoted are specific to the Witnesses of Jehovas. Many people throughout the centuries have recognized them.

On the topic of Papacy: This office goes explicitly against Jesus commands "do not call anyone father for only one is your father, the heavenly one" and "you are all brothers, none of you should play the leader"

i love how god all hints to it but yet most of us stay blind

>10 Hear ye the word which the Lord speaketh unto you, O house of Israel:

>2 Thus saith the Lord, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.

>3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.

>4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

exactly. This order against idolatry was given to Israel (they kept worshiping the Baals and Moloch) but was repeated to the christians too, in the Acts of Apostles.

I'm pretty sure that the Church as we know it today started in Jerusalem and Antioch shortly after the resurrection of Christ as described in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.
Constantine the Great convened the Council of Nicaea to settle the Arian heresy which subordinated Christ to the Father and even the Swiss heretic and crypto-Muslim Calvin would light you up like Servetus for questioning the most fundamental dogma of the Holy Mother Church that Christ and the Father are of the same essence.
Go to hell with your lies, Wikipedia heathen.

Aye, you have a point.
We still have many pagan traditions, even inside my church. Pic is a replacement for an old labyrinth or maze in my church.
You are supposed to walk it while praying. There is order to it. It's utterly pagan. (pre-Christian)
The practice of kissing under the mistletoe is pagan. Venerating various plants, holly, ivy, and bring an evergreen pine tree into the home is also pagan.
At New Year I remember my grandmother sending me out and I had to bring into her home, some coal in my left hand and some salt into my right hand. She said it was because I have black hair and green eyes. Also "tall, dark and handsome". She explained that it is a ceremony to balance out the light (salt) and the dark (coal). And some other symbolism that I can't remember.
These traditions die hard. Christianity took them over and incorporated them.

>I'm pretty sure that the Church as we know it today started in Jerusalem and Antioch shortly after the resurrection of Christ as described in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles.
technically correct. However if you examine closely what the christians of the 1st century believed and what those after that concile did, you will find dramatic differences. And not for the better.

This has been predicted by Jesus, when he told the illustration of the man planting a filed and his enemy planting bad weeds over night so that it would be come impossible to distinguish both (meaning that the pseudo-christians would for a long time overwhelm and be indistinguishable from true christians) Just as the Jews had lost their way despite being Gods chosen people, so it happened with the church of that time.

To claim that the loving God who punished Israel for sacrificing their sons in fire alive to Moloch would come up with such a twisted thing as eternal torment in hell is just plain insulting against God. Just as an example.
There are many such points which actually do not come from the Bible but from the pagan religions of that time or from greek philosophies. It was certainly done (at first) with good intentions: making christianity more accessible to those people. Nonetheless you cannot mix Gods teaching with that of the devil, not even a little bit. Or do you pour just a teeny tiny bit of dog poop over a delicious meal?

Please tell me where I lie, based on the bible and not on church traditions and I will try to correct this.
